More and more video evidence of the immense devastation wrought by the great tsunami which inundated Japan’s northern pacific prefectures continues to surface, with the spectacle of entire cities being swept away being captured on film by terrified onlookers,
The videos are enough to put anyone off living on the coast:
The wisdom of letting a secretive power company build and operate a series of supposedly tsunami-proof nuclear reactors directly in the path of such phenomena seems less and less comprehensible.

I have notice that there are ppl watching the waves approaching them and they are not even running when its only METERS away!!?? Did ppl lost the instinct to RUN?
I would be in running mode ready to run anytime.
apparently you've never been in shock.
Apparently you can outrun a wall of water heading towards you at 500 miles per hour.
Are you stupid or just dense?
O_o
On shores it's much more slower. 500mph is in deep ocean.
"Real men don't run from a tsunami...they stare it down (from a high point)"
...if not u can always use ur drill to pierce the tsunami...
You couldn't have outdriven it. No joke - there's a video where it catches up to a car. Staying at high ground was the smartest move.
I'm wondering if you'd make such a comment again at the age of 60+... Probably not.
Not all are elderly people...
There's not really anywhere to run to...
I'm guessing you've never seen and older person running...
I know a lot of people in their 60's, and none of them have lost their survival instinct. They're old, not stupid.
That's precisely the point. They're old. Without their youth and strength...
The tsunami probably was unexpected and when you see a huge wall of water flying at you, you probably stand still in surprise and fear. I know I would XD
no, they were filming silly
people ran away from danger automatically or else something is seriously wrong with the instinctual hardwiring
That's called survival of the fittest.
Those too stupid to run when they see a greater-than-5m wall of water rushing at them have lost the natural right to breathe.
You can run 500mph?
As soon as you HEAR a tsunami is coming, you would have long fled for the hills unless you are blind and deaf or you are a cripple.
Anyone else suddenly feel like watching Ponyo?
I want to watch Day after tomorrow again.
Well.. at least that movie is a little less over-the-top than 2012..
Yes, only a little..
That was a brilliant movie, to think something like that can happen O_o
except helicopters cannot freeze midair in that temperature.
Sort of..
..Exept 99.9% of the characters in that movie forgot to panicked instead feeling so carefree despite the tsunami already flooded their town.. which kinda makes the happy go lucky My Neighbour Totoro looks like a tragic melodramatic film.
No, you're a sick f--
...Wait, yeah. Yeah I do.
I just want to point out that greedy powerplant companies aside...
1. Japan needed more electricity, and Nuclear is the only affordable way for them to expand the power supply.
2. Powerplants built at the coast allows a steady source of cooling water.
3. Most importantly, areas near Sendai have been stagnating economically for years. They wanted the powerplants because it brings in jobs and money for the area.
Things are the way they are because there was no alternative.

That was fucking 35 years ago.OF COURSE THERE WASN"T MUCH TECHNOLOGY AGAINST A 9.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE.Not to mention how different standards were back then. Nobody even questioned how NONE of tokyo's buildings collapsed? Idiot.
There's still isn't much technology against a 9.0 magnitude earthquake... correction, there's still isn't any.
And btw, Tokyo's buildings didn't collapse cause the earthquake was in the sea, not in Tokyo. If it had been we would be looking at a much worse catastrophe.
Anon 07:41
It's more than just that - Building codes in Japan integrate expansion brackets and compression zones into the buildings structure, which are surprisingly good at absorbing energy from an earthquake. Larger buildings are also designed to have a different resonant frequency to those normally found in earthquakes.
All of that basically means that the buildings move with the earthquake rather than resist it - scary to be in the inside during a quake all the same, but they're far less likely to collapse than buildings in the US, for example.
The buildings most prone to collapsing are older buildings from the post-war period and cold war... The codes were tightened further after the Kobe earthquake in 1995, so any buildings built after that actually have a good chance of surviving.
2nd video pretty sad.
A few people seem to be helping a person in a wheelchair and two seems to get hit by some random pieces of house and one of them seems to get swept away.
you can see they survived
If you see well there were 2 persons, both got hit and just one of them stayed in ground.
Very sad to see that.
Serve them right for raping our women
I hope you die in pain.
Well they also rape their women if it makes you feel any better.
Oh boo hoo.
Chinese? Koreans? Filipinos? Malaysians?
Don't forget that centuries ago, we all came from barbaric tribes and clans who invaded other people's lands, raping their daughters and wives, cut their fathers' heads as trophies, turned the villagers into our slaves, burnt their houses, use them for sacrificial rituals, etc.
All of our roots were rotten at the first place so stop acting like only the Japanese and the Germans were evil.
I've been waiting for someone to say this!
wtf?
Wow can't believe all those shit happened just 2 weeks ago. Time sure flies fast
They should take a leasson from dragonball and start building round buildings.
they'll hold much better but be a pain to build
More just a problem of space pain to make a stadium everywhere
i have a question.
isnt it common knolage that when an earthquake hit, water will follow?
how long did they have between feeling the quake, and the tsunami?
Every video with the water was like the over flowing toilet stool kept flushing and flushing and flushing and flushing until the room was full of water, then kept on flushing.
The more of these videos I see the more they look unreal. I feel like all of this is just a movie and Michael Bay will come out and say cut. I really do feel bad for all the people in Japan especially those in the Sendai area. I hope they can all rebuild whats left of there former lives.
Ok, I know this sounds obvious, but if I was one of those guys filming the whole tsunami destruction thing, common sense would tell me to get my shit, grab my kids(if they have any) and get the fuck out of there! I would be better off saving my own neck than wasting time filming the tsunami!
I guess I would be like I never may see something like this again I rather film it and hide at a safe location (Not the Vid 2 Location FOR SURE) than always wonder
the second video seems to have been taken down...
Damn, if it weren't for the fact that thousands of people died here, I'd be cracking some Ika Musume- related jokes.
"The wisdom of letting a secretive power company build and operate a series of supposedly tsunami-proof nuclear reactors directly in the path of such phenomena seems less and less comprehensible."
Artefact, you are usually much more reasonable than this.
Perhaps because the geologists at ToDai told them there hadn't been a major quake off that coast in over 1000 years? (One reason WHY all those plants are along that area is because of that claim.) Because the plant withstood an earthquake that was the fifth worst on the planet since records have been kept, and was a 16 times more powerful that it was designed to withstand, and STILL took no operational damage from the quake? (Without the historically large tsunami swamping it, the plant would have shut down as designed and stayed 100% safe.)
You can't design for Armageddon. That quake could have been centered under Tokyo. Would we now be criticizing the builders of skyscrapers for building them in an earthquake zone? Should we now stop building skyscrapers?
Certain things we want come with risks. Sunshine 60 coming down could kill 1000+ people at once. But skyscrapers are convenient and pretty much necessary in Japan, so we build them. Electrical power is convenient. And in a resource-poor country with little space, nucs are the only answer. And remember, according to the World Health Organization (hardly an industry shill) Chernobyl killed no more than 40 to 65 people. They have yet found no statistically significant excess cancers (remember, there have been very few even among the hibakusha, according to international studies--sub-acute radiation exposure is far less dangerous than most people think).
However, I will agree that TEPCO does not have an impressive record. I remember the scandal over the faked welding inspection reports at one of the breeder reactors. Some poor SOB got a face full of liquid sodium when one failed. But that's hardly unique to the nuc trade. 16 people were killed only a few years ago when a mansion block fell down in Tokyo. Turned out the construction company had been buying off the government building code inspectors for years. (And, I might point out, 16 dead is a large fraction of those killed at Chernobyl. But we're not shit-our pants scared of shoddy building practices.)
The worst effect of radiation seems to be that it makes people's brains fall out.
O_O evangelion 4 real WTF!
