I just want to point out that greedy powerplant companies aside...
1. Japan needed more electricity, and Nuclear is the only affordable way for them to expand the power supply.
2. Powerplants built at the coast allows a steady source of cooling water.
3. Most importantly, areas near Sendai have been stagnating economically for years. They wanted the powerplants because it brings in jobs and money for the area.
Things are the way they are because there was no alternative.

That was fucking 35 years ago.OF COURSE THERE WASN"T MUCH TECHNOLOGY AGAINST A 9.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE.Not to mention how different standards were back then. Nobody even questioned how NONE of tokyo's buildings collapsed? Idiot.
There's still isn't much technology against a 9.0 magnitude earthquake... correction, there's still isn't any.
And btw, Tokyo's buildings didn't collapse cause the earthquake was in the sea, not in Tokyo. If it had been we would be looking at a much worse catastrophe.

It's more than just that - Building codes in Japan integrate expansion brackets and compression zones into the buildings structure, which are surprisingly good at absorbing energy from an earthquake. Larger buildings are also designed to have a different resonant frequency to those normally found in earthquakes.
All of that basically means that the buildings move with the earthquake rather than resist it - scary to be in the inside during a quake all the same, but they're far less likely to collapse than buildings in the US, for example.
The buildings most prone to collapsing are older buildings from the post-war period and cold war... The codes were tightened further after the Kobe earthquake in 1995, so any buildings built after that actually have a good chance of surviving.

Every video with the water was like the over flowing toilet stool kept flushing and flushing and flushing and flushing until the room was full of water, then kept on flushing.
The more of these videos I see the more they look unreal. I feel like all of this is just a movie and Michael Bay will come out and say cut. I really do feel bad for all the people in Japan especially those in the Sendai area. I hope they can all rebuild whats left of there former lives.
Ok, I know this sounds obvious, but if I was one of those guys filming the whole tsunami destruction thing, common sense would tell me to get my shit, grab my kids(if they have any) and get the fuck out of there! I would be better off saving my own neck than wasting time filming the tsunami!

Artefact, you are usually much more reasonable than this.
Perhaps because the geologists at ToDai told them there hadn't been a major quake off that coast in over 1000 years? (One reason WHY all those plants are along that area is because of that claim.) Because the plant withstood an earthquake that was the fifth worst on the planet since records have been kept, and was a 16 times more powerful that it was designed to withstand, and STILL took no operational damage from the quake? (Without the historically large tsunami swamping it, the plant would have shut down as designed and stayed 100% safe.)
You can't design for Armageddon. That quake could have been centered under Tokyo. Would we now be criticizing the builders of skyscrapers for building them in an earthquake zone? Should we now stop building skyscrapers?
Certain things we want come with risks. Sunshine 60 coming down could kill 1000+ people at once. But skyscrapers are convenient and pretty much necessary in Japan, so we build them. Electrical power is convenient. And in a resource-poor country with little space, nucs are the only answer. And remember, according to the World Health Organization (hardly an industry shill) Chernobyl killed no more than 40 to 65 people. They have yet found no statistically significant excess cancers (remember, there have been very few even among the hibakusha, according to international studies--sub-acute radiation exposure is far less dangerous than most people think).
However, I will agree that TEPCO does not have an impressive record. I remember the scandal over the faked welding inspection reports at one of the breeder reactors. Some poor SOB got a face full of liquid sodium when one failed. But that's hardly unique to the nuc trade. 16 people were killed only a few years ago when a mansion block fell down in Tokyo. Turned out the construction company had been buying off the government building code inspectors for years. (And, I might point out, 16 dead is a large fraction of those killed at Chernobyl. But we're not shit-our pants scared of shoddy building practices.)
The worst effect of radiation seems to be that it makes people's brains fall out.
