29% of USA: “Quake is Divine Retribution Against Japan”

A poll of Americans reveals 38% consider the recent earthquake and tsunami a “sign from God” and a further 29% believe such disasters are actually divine punishment from God.
The report in question, based a random sample of 1,000 Americans and conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, a secular research body concerned with religion and public policy:
Nearly 6-in-10 (59%) white evangelicals also believe that natural disasters are a sign from God. Only about one-third of Catholics (31%) and white mainline Protestants (34%) believe natural disasters are a sign from God.
A majority (53%) of white evangelicals believe that God punishes nations for the sins of its citizens–a view held by just 1-in-5 white mainline Protestants and Catholics.
The revelation that Ishihara is only as crazy as the average evangelical Christian is somehow less than surprising.

Also, the fact that there's apparently 4 options to say "God creates natural disasters" and no option to say "Natural disasters are Natural" makes me a bit suspicious of how this poll was conducted, as well as region and groups tested. If I poll 1000 people from Bumfuck, Mississippi, I can't really say they represent people in Chicago, L.A., Houston or New York.
16% of Americans are Agnostic/Atheist so your stats are off. Also people will identify with a religion because of there parents affiliation, but in reality do not practice or never have or never will practice said religion. These people identify with religions just because of the morals there parents beat into them from a early age. Some people simply identify with a particular religion because its hip thing for them to do. Probably about 50% of that 84% of of religion Americans are plastic people that would say anything to get 15 minutes of fame.

It really varies on state-to-state, Arte. Even city-to-city. 1000 people in Miami are going to have a different opinion than 1000 people in San Francisco. And they'll probably have a different percentage than people in L.A.
