Atelier Meruru Cutest Atelier Ever

atelier-meruru-001.jpg

Fans of Gust’s Atelier series of alchemy RPGs, now enjoying a huge surge in popularity thanks in no small part to the excruciatingly appealing artwork of Kishida Mel, have been rapturously greeting the advent of the 12th game in the series, Atelier Meruru.

The game features a new protagonist, the 15-year-old Merurulince Rede Arls, in the same world as Atelier Rorona and Totori.

Rorona has been turned into a loli for the game – it is not clear what events are behind her lolification (she was 14 and 22 in the last two games), but it has been greeted as a blessing by series fans.

This looks gorgeous. One of these days, someone will extract the ingame models so I could study them thoroughly.

Actually, full 3D, bro. The models are cel-shaded and the backgrounds are plain, good ole 3D, however.

no retard, people play WRPGs for their stories and gameplay. people (like you) play JRPGs because you're pedophiles who want to fap to the 10 year old characters.

You know, I learned something relatively recently that explains a little of where all this may come from.

A friend of mine was speaking with a Japanese friend of his, and the Japanese friend asked something along the lines of 'Why do you westerners like Japanese? We all have big heads and small bodies' and it prompted a discussion between my friend and I. We realized that yeah, proportionally, Japanese have childlike heads. It's part of their genetic makeup in general. The proportion of their heads to their shoulders, and often the rest of their bodies, tends to drift more toward the equivalent of western adolescents.

It's not something definitive, but since sexual attractiveness is generated by shape relationships on the body, not age or anything conjecture-based like that, it's a good bet that much of what people call 'pedophilia' when people find younger characters cute and adorable in anime is more along the lines of adjusted perception based on Japanese culture. We as westerners perceive these characters as young kids, meanwhile as we learned in the recent article, Japanese men enjoy what we consider 'childlike' actions from females, and consider it cute.

Put them together: the body proportions, the actions that are widely considered cute, the foreign perception from a different background, and in general you have a setup for one gigantic misunderstanding. From some basis, that's probably where the 2D vs 3D argument developed. You'll find many anime fans who love loli, yet perceived real life equivalents are unappealing. I think in part it stems from these unconscious recognitions.

actually I play for story, and I don't play wrpgs because it is impossible for me to like a character that doesn't seem to have a voice in his actions outside of his sandbox mode (I'm talking about the protagonist of every wrpg, the w would stand better for wrong than for western by the way) On another note, I'm not actually sure how are the tales series of games, or the final fantasy series lolicon at all.

Well, based on this I would tend to agree.. The artwork looks good, the backgrounds looks good, but they miss match pretty hard when put together. Am I the only one who thinks the characters sticks out like sore thumbs from the environment?
Although I think it might have more to do with colors then style.

    06:18 25/03/2011 # ! Neutral (0)

A lot of it is how the colors interact yes, but it's more of how they interact in a dreamlike fashion. The characters almost appear self-illuminated, like they're more celestial than the world they inhabit, and to a degree I believe that's intentional. They don't have lighting as their friend when it comes to cell shading usually. Lighting becomes rather difficult to integrate when it's limited like that, so this is apparently sort of a simultaneous solution to making the characters that much more 'dreamy' and making it unnecessary to worry about shadows too much.

I'm sure some scenes will work better than others. It's basically like they're in perpetual sunlight. When they're not in sunlight, it'll probably look a bit odd.

All I know is Rorona was just an all-around extremely enjoyable experience, and I was never distracted by the art. All I hope is Totori gets here soon, and this soon to follow.

Not going to happen, though- Sony Computer Entertainment America demands dubs to be added in retail games.

Moreover, "shitty soulless dubs" is a rather harsh misconception. Dubs can be great from time to time- just listen to Neptunia's one, for god's sake.

No, they are always soulless and shitty, really.
They should just go with the original voices, but that's never going to happen.

I'd rather play them with a Japanese-English dictionary in one hand than buying the localized version.

im just saying itd be preferable to have the game at all, rather than not at all because the american publishers don't want to spend money on dubbing a less popular game.

granted there are a few exceptions to shitty soulless dubs, when it's done wrong, it's horrible and gamebreaking.
final fantasy 14, eternal sonata, star ocean :TLH, Lost odyssey and ToA were pretty painful, and since only a few of any here get dual audio, i end up just muting... i guess i might be in the minority though.
