Yes, the original author sort of made it a point that what he did was incredibly stupid, but he's a stubborn adolescent, so that didn't enter his mind. He was trying to show how kids can be selfish even when they think they're being selfless.
About the foolish act where they left their relative's house for a cave.., well I could say he's really foolish to do that. But then I changed my view (sorta) after watching one live action adaptation of it which is of course obviously inferior but somehow managed to depict something that Miyazaki forgot to put in the original film; the fact that his auntie was a total bitch who only cared for the kid's inherited property from their late mother.
I'm not saying that it's okay for that live-action to do their own depiction by changing certain characters but it makes more sense than just having Shinta thinking that they're being a burden to their relatives so he decided to move away.
