masturbation master kurosawa is not your regular recommend to your friend manga (especially to girls), the title explains it all. But its a good read nonetheless.
Onani Master Kurosawa eh... It probably isn't... but if you can convince them to read through it, it's quite the awesome manga.

You should definitely look into Sangatsu no Lion (which won) then at least, its actually pretty damn good.
Plus you learn a little about shougi in the process aswell

I'd recommend "Coppelion" - In 2016 a meltdown of a nuclear power plant creates a big catastrophe in Tokyo. 20 years later, the city has become a ghost town due to the high levels of radiation. From that area a distress signal is received, the Self-Defense Forces dispatch 3 girls from the special unit Coppelion to search for survivors. But why aren't they wearing any protection against radiation?

It's an interesting comic in terms of characters, but the 'science' in Coppelion makes my head hurt. If you're going to use some science to make the comic seem plausible, you need to try to get the rest of it right, otherwise it comes off as fear mongering.

Not very likely. Especially since the science behind it is really, really shaky and from what I've read of it translated, it might be warming up to suggest that the Americans were dumping waste in the zone of alienation.
I read none of those, but having finally finished reading Honey & Clover last night, I have to agree with Chika Umino coming up first. Perfect mix of humor, drama and lessons for life.
I've never heard of any of these. I'll definitely give 1, 2, 3, and 10 a look if I see them (since I can't read Japanese). A manga I'd recommend? Yotsuba&!. Though my friends are already otaku and have no doubt read it ~_~

I'm surprised Dame Yome Nikki isn't listed on there. It's such a nice, sweet hilarious gag comic about a newlywed couple, I want to shove that in the face of everyone I see, otaku and non otaku alike.

I've been reading Otoyomegatari (The Bride’s Stories) and it is exceptionally good. The storyline and progression, and especially the artwork is amazingly detailed.
I'm a huge fan of Emma, her previous work, but I think Otoyomegatari may just be even better!
I haven't read any of these, but I do know most of the authors. Chika Umino and Setona Mizushiro have written good manga.
