Manga fans craving a ranking blissfully devoid of One Piece need look no further than the 2011 Manga Taisho (“Manga Awards”), instead based around the concept of “manga you could recommend to your friends” as selected by various manga publishing industry figures.
Technically there is only one winner and a number of nominees, but as they are scored individually the obligatory top 10 is formed:
1. March Comes in Like a Lion, by Chika Umino (75)
2. The Bride’s Stories, by Kaoru Mori (55)
3. I Am a Hero, by Kengo Hanazawa (51)
4. Hana no Zubora-Meshi, by Masayuki Kusumi & Etsuko Mizusawa (50)
5. Shitsuren Shokoratie, by Setona Mizushiro (47)
6. Sayonara mo Iwazu ni, by Kentarō Ueno (42)
7. Shingeki no Kyojin, by Hajime Isayama (41)
8. Kokkoku, by Seita Horio (28)
9. Mashiro no Oto, by Marimo Ragawa (36)
10. Drifters, by Kouta Hirano / Don’t Cry Girl, by Tomoko Yamashita (35)
Only manga with less than 8 volumes are eligible for nomination, explaining the lack of domination by the usual blockbusters.
I think Nana, Kaichou wa Maid Sama, Kimi ni Todoke would be nice for friends who wants to get into manga 😛
