TAF 2011 Cancelled by Quake

The 2011 Tokyo International Anime Fair has been officially cancelled, ostensibly because of the unstable power and transit situations.
TAF’s booth occupancy had been eviscerated by the boycott, but the event was set to go ahead anyway, in no small part due to Ishihara’s need to avoid humiliation; evidently only the disruption of the earthquake and inconvenient reactor meltdowns proved enough to prompt the decision.
The competing Anime Contents Expo is said to be “discussing” the issue of whether to cancel as well – as of writing their homepage has announced no change, and in recent post-quake interviews they only say they are giving the matter due consideration, but there are currently unconfirmed reports of it being cancelled as well.
ACE may face the same power supply and saving pressures (although it is not clear whether such events actually consume more electricity than whatever it is the attendees would be doing were they elsewhere), though increasingly it seems the general sense that everything must be cancelled for no specific reason is a major motivation, as evidenced by the cancellation of virtually all of Japan’s upcoming game releases.
With damage to Big Sight and a possible long-term power shortage, there is also concern the next Comiket will be cancelled as well – Reitaisai has already faced such a fate.

well at least there's a good reason now...no more ishihara bullshit
But Eat-Shit-Hara would never be able to experience the wonderful feeling of hosting an Expo with zero attendants! Well anyway by this point I don't care about anything else besides Japan recovering
Yea, I was personally wishing for that to happen...
I agree.
Ishihara just found an opportunity to cancel the TAF due to the quake and power issues, not because 95% of the participants dropped out.
*cough, oh I'm excuse me, Im allergic to bullshit.
he found a chance to run away without humiliation...
I am glad to see this finally go but a shame it won't look bad on that moron.
Hopefully they don't cancel ACE, the people need something to get their minds off of the real world, even if it is only for a few hours.
After all this, I thought they needed money, cancelling every event and new products is not the better choice.
I heard some talk taht some members of the JGSDF Special Forces Group and within the Central Readiness Force of the idea of a covert operation to eliminate Ishaihara and make it look like an accident.
along with that, it was kind of expected that something like this would happen, given the disarray that Japan is in right now.
well lol, all discussion are now for nothing
Yes I agree this TAF is cancelled ! :3 Way to go :D
Destroy the evil plan of Ishihara !!!
lol he just saved him from humiliation.
Goes without saying. Though it does leaves a sour taste in my mouth knowing this is a convenience to Ishihara because of his ban.
"although it is not clear whether such events actually consume more electricity than whatever it is the attendees would be doing were they elsewhere"
Probably would. Big events at big venues have huuuuuge utilities costs; I wouldn't be surprised if it's higher per-person than an average citizen's consumption over the same time.
Escape by use of Earthquake hmm
(although it is not clear whether such events actually consume more electricity than whatever it is the attendees would be doing were they elsewhere)
Reasonable arguement actually a couple thousand people vs 1 building HMM makes a good point
Although Canceling Comiket well NOW THAT IS A BIG EVENT! Too cancel it would be against the spirit of Japan in my opinion but I would understand.
Even Gaia can't take his B.S.
Hm...I wonder why they cancelled rather than postponed.
I know ANN had a really hyped contest where the prize was a trip to Japan and TAF.....the winner must be feeling pretty crap right now.
Hmph Would Not really have changed a thing considering that Eat-Shit-Hara decided to rape TAF and purge most of what was worth going there for(I mean going to Japan just see Mickey Wut Duh Hail?!)
Why crappy? This is the most exciting time to be here.
Might even get to experience the Tokkai quake.
It could be a new concept of Reality TV.
it's pretty fucking unlikely to cancel Comiket, except that the organizers and planning may be affected. Big Sight is an important (read: BANNER) landmark for Tokyo, just like Tokyo Tower. Anything wrong with it will be fixed IMMEDIATELY.
ATTENDANCE to Summer Comiket..? That's a different story. You have about 1/4 the population and 1/3 the area of Japan directly or iundirectly affected by this event. They certainly won't be selling doujin, or buying.
In retrospect, dropping attendance by 1/3 would make summer Comiket tolerable. This is one reason I've never attended summer, only winter..
Can we just "cancel" iShit... with a contract?
When Japan or Tokyo need money, Ishihara will beg money from anime manga again
It certainly would be foolish to even waste the materials.

Come on people, they have a nearby reactor malfunctioning.
Glad to hear TAF is dead, but I would consider it weird if they held anything else nearby as well.
I sure wouldn't be going. Hell I'd already have packed and left the region entirely if I lived nearby.
We have a very nice Japanese community in Agincourt Toronto Canada by the way. I personally think they should join up with Anime North due this spring.
cancelled for no reason? big fucking tsunami, and people have better shit to do for now.
wasn't there a graph that showed that in japan, games don't live as long typically, if they don't sell will in the first 4 weeks odds are it wont sell well ever.
after a major earthquake, and massive tsunami, it makes sense to cancel game releases for the time being, and wait till everyone gets there shit somewhat together, as in at least getting the reactors under control.
As a matter of fact, Tokyo is relatively unharmed by both the quake and the tsunami. Assuming the Japanese power company isn't bullshitting all the international nuclear watchdogs (and getting away with it), then the nuclear crisis is also having little impact on Tokyo, at least for the moment.
While buying games may not be topping most households' shopping lists at the moment, equating the quake and tsunami to sales dropping to the point of ruining games is pretty far-fetched.
Granted, it is probably good business acumen to delay releases until good news start coming out and the general morale of the nation starts to recover, but going ahead with releases doesn't mean that the game will bomb either.
Especially when you consider how japan's youth (specifically game otakus in tokyo) are apathetic to anything but their own interests. Case in point: http://www.sankakucomplex.com/charts/niconico/player.php?vid=sm13845301 "M9.0 Earthquake but I won't stop playing my game!"
the hard core otaku, basically what you are describing, don't give a fuck, but i cant believe that all of a videogames following is made up of the "hardcore" ones.
dont get me wrong, if i was in japan and basically unaffected i would be pissed, but during the crisis, i probably wouldnt get new games until 2 conditions are met
1) i am 100% sure no one i care about is dead.
2) i am sure nothing nuclear would kill me (not a Chernobyl bad, but areas now uninhabitable bad, and may also effect me next)
until both are confirmed, i would probably play the classics that i know and love, like a zelda marathon, or re watched the my favroite anime one more time.
Otaku are not a particularly stable group of people. They are able to contain their internal pressures by purchasing games, viewing and collecting anime, engaging in perverse antics with figurines and dolls, and purchasing and fapping to hentai doujinshi.
Cancelling, postponing, or restricting these outlets, as well as the wholesale damage wreaked by the quake on otaku personal collections and anime figure shrines could lead to a potential meltdown of these marginally maladjusted personalities.
I foresee mass suicides and possible public lunatic murder sprees. Aya Hirano may do something strange.
The US needs to start shipping emergency aid in the form of animated cartoons, comic books, and related goods to Japan right now. Disney, Stan Lee, and South Park need to act to avoid potential tragedy. Simple humanity demands that we act now. But no Child Pornography (no lolis)! Sorry Japan, that would be wrong.

1. Stan Lee is Anime/Manga fan and is currently developing two projects(Ultimo and Heroman).
2. Marvel is currently developing a few anime projects with Madhouse.
3. A select amount of comic book creators have endorsed the Anime medium. Some have even gone as far adding influences from popular hit animes such as Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Behop.
4. Disney has been in the anime business for as long as you were born. They licensed Gilibi Studio classics such as Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and had a channel slot dedicated to Anime/Cartoon programming(formerly known as Jetix). Currently, they have Naruto Shippudden on Disney XD.
5. Anime/Manga=Cartoons/Comics because both mediums offer unique traits and a little something for everyone.
Also, your generalization about Japan's CP or "perversion" is off track and irrelevant to this topic.
Anime, Cartoons, and comics rule.
Anon 23:57, you fail.
Especially child pornography, we need to keep the global production rates up, and although western cp doesn't have the same level of quality, it's better than nothing.
it's OPERATION YASHIMA:

Never been more proud of Evangelion.
I just had to rewatch that part again ^^
quite honestly it would be crude to held such events in the current situation. they should be more concerned with the current situation and recovery of it than with
such frivolous fairs. i mean in the current situation it can't be deny they end up looking frivolous and unfitting.
will have to wait till next year.
It would have been akward if the events took place during the current crises.
It would have had the same feeling as a last meal. :\
Hmm how to explain it...
You are looking forward to the new anime for the next year and bought a lot of stuf.
But it can be all gone tomorow thanks another earthquake or the meltdown. Not to mention your family, friends, house etc.
I know its a bit gloomy and I do know that the Japanese can overcome this disaster. But they are really unlucky.
Argh its soo frustrating that you cant do anything more for them besides donating money and hoping that it reaches in the right hands...
So I am glad they know thats its not the time right now to go the anime fair and get blown up with anime goods in your hands when the nuclear plants explode.
I'm somewhat certain that a single pachinko parlor consumes more electricity.
For TAF I just say "good riddance". They knew beforehand that the event would be disappointing. Now they have a good cop-out.
Let's not mince words, these events are events of and for the economy. I think ACE will probably happen. Japan can't just abbandon every potential source of income.
Hey let's blame the quake!
Well, if there was any good to come out of this, it's this.
Who cares. With everyone that matters already boycotting this and waiting for the Chiba event, TAF is dead.
