Japan’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake has caused extensive damage to northern areas, with most of the devastation sustained in the less populous northern prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima, with the coastal city of Sendai especially badly hit.
The most severe damage was largely inflicted on coastal areas of Touhoku by tsunami, with 10m waves washing even ships ashore.
Casualty reports are as yet largely unconfirmed, but 184 are confirmed dead by police, 708 are reportedly missing, and in Sendai there are reports of “several hundred” bodies washed up on the beach.

I saw this news in my country {Australia}... really sad and tragic... is this the biggest earthquake that happened in Japan?? and the casualty is so big... my condolences to all people who have lost their lives in this tragic event and those of suffered from it.
When I first saw the news about this, I didn't believe it. The pictures just look unnatural..truly a disaster
WTF?! Is that a normal reaction? To read/watch a news item and go "Nah, can't be real..."
Don't people usually just see something like this and be ambivalent or interested... Either way, still acknowledging it fucking happened?!
It's called Shock and disbelief is the first natural reaction to something so horrific. Ease up.
You're damn right it's shock and disbelief. When you don't see something like this everyday, you aren't sure how to take it.
All these earthquakes must be caused by global warming.
*cough*
(In case it wasn't 100% obvious, I'm being sarcastic)
He could be watching at CNN...
It's fascinating to see the graphs, because from what I'm seeing here is somewhat equivalent to the Tsunami event that happen a 2005. This earthquakes' epicenter must of been in the Ocean to create that Tsunami. Some of those pictures are staggering, because if you look closely. Some pictures are being taken as the First wave of the event is happening! It won't surprise me when the toll is taken, that the greatest killer here will be the Tsunami and not the Earthquake itself.

Continue to try to contact your relatives and even attempt to call the government too. They may have information on the exact areas being affected to at least give you some relief at best.
It's the biggest earthquake on record, Tenshi. I'm certain worse ones have hit that area in the past before anyone used the Richter Scale.
Ahh, that's really bad than... I have a friend who lives in northern part of Japan (Sendai I think) and I was so worried that I kept calling him from yesterday but she's not answering.... I hope she's alright...
A lot of the phone lines in the north are only dialling outbound at the moment - there's a lot of damage to the infrastructure so they've limited service to make sure people can call for help if they need it.
If your friends not on the coastline they should be O.K, - most of the damage wasn't from the earthquake but from the tsunami that followed.
It's been moved to 9.0 magnitude, heading toward 9.1. Yeah, the magnitude means little compared to the damage. Close to a thousand is apparently dead, tens of thousand missing.
If you have friends, check the internet for the best way to contact them. This is a stressful situation, it's good to talk to them, but be modest. I'm still trying to contact my father, grandparents, my cousins, and my aunt. Wish you luck.
The "magnitude" figures usually don't take into account the effect at a given area, only at the epicentre - the Japanese actually use their own "shindo" system (seen above) designed to measure the severity at a particular locality (which can vary substantially based on factors like the area's geological structure as well as simple proximity).
In any case, a magnitude 9 in the middle of nowhere is nothing compared to a 7 or 8 under a city or in a vulnerable spot - although the "5th worst recorded" certainly makes for better headlines.
@Tenshi_: I can relate. It's a scary feeling not knowing. I don't know what else to do but wait.
it's unlikely your friend has electricity, try not to worry too much since there really is nothing you can do right now.
On another Note...

Saw this posted on engadget earlier today. Might be worth a shot.
I remember visiting my friend's house a while ago and her house was near the coast (like literally 5 min away from it I think)... I don't know but really... argh this is really stressing as I can't contact her in any sorts. I've check internet as well but she's not online atm...
@Miroku
You are wrong, in 2004. 9,3 Earthquake in Hindia Ocean Occur
229.826 Missing and 186.983 were Killed, from 8 countries
Indonesia suffer great loss, from the tragedy (being the closest)
250.000 People either killed or missing on Indonesia alone
Both wrong.
Biggest earthquake in history:9,5 in Chile, on May 22, 1960.Sismo de Valdivia
Do homework, fellas.
I was stating the fact that there have been stronger earthquakes in Japan in the past before the advent of the Richter Scale.... not worse earthquakes than anywhere else.
My statement had absolutely nothing to do with earthquakes anywhere else, or the price of tea in China for that matter. Think before you post, sir.
Actually, I heard that it was the 5th largest earthquake ever recorded. I could be wrong, because I think they're still collecting data and the magnitude keeps changing. This is pretty sad. But from the looks of it, they're a pretty strong nation. They're pulling it together quickly and in a very orderly fashion. I'll definitely be donating to Red Cross or some sort of relief fund for them though.
tokyo magnitude 8.0 anyone? its the anime come to life :/
Last time I checked, they said it was the 6th most powerful earthquake ever recorded. Now it's the 5th.
I hope Japan could rise up again from this disaster...
@David 14:42 yeah, it does kind of remind me the anime Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. It is very similar to it. my deepest condolences to the people who lost their lives. hopefully all of Japan's citizen survived and no more death increasing anymore.
Was that Whitebeard's doing?
My reaction was small then I got more information and I was shocked at this
Have you guys seen some of the landmarks taken down Tokyo Tower is Bent

@Anon 14:23
Actually, the photo of the Gundam statue lying down is from at least a couple days prior to the quake. Apparently, they were dismantling it for some other reason.
4th biggest mind you (biggest in japan however)
You have no condescending what? You can't 'have' a non-nominal adjective. Also, "condescending" means to look down on something or patronize it, so what you're basically writing is that you don't look down on "sexual disgusting shit." I'm pretty sure that's not what you're trying to say, so why don't you take a deep breath, pry the caps lock key off of your keyboard and start all over with less yelling, swearing and unintelligible nonsense.
What the fuck Japan, why you keep getting damaged all the time?
I still cant believe that a earthquake and tsunamis happened all at the same day in my favorite country!
I can just hope my friends there are allright, and when I say friends I mean real friends and the people I dont know personally but I still love, like Yasunori Mitsuda, UtadaHikaru, Gackt and Aya Hirano.
But I know Japan will be allright after some months, its a strong country.
After a few years there will be an anime about the Tsunami. Everything is made into anime.
so u have no condescending to the whole world then?
bhenchod teri maa ki chut laude randi ki aulad
Have a heart, please.....1000's have lost their lives today, can't we show a little respect?
And yes, it is sad that we won't have any new anime episodes or manga for an unknown time frame.
Have some patience.....Japan is a strong, wealthy country; and Obama wants to send financial aid their way, which is all good, but I pray that the help will actually reach them before it's too late, as most of the country has no electricity, food or shelter from the elements :(
So please, show some kindness towards Japan and those families who have lost some loved ones, and pray for their fast recovery (even though it might take up to a year before they completely recover)
Men who have young brides, men who marry girls who have recently hit puberty, are happy.
Why do you hate such men? They have something good if they have young submissive brides.
CTHULHU RISING!!!!!!
CTHULHU LOVES ALL OF THOSE SHIT SO SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!
Yeah yeah, you hate America, now stay on topic.
Tenshi_: same with me...i was at work chilling and all i see is a shit storm on tv and the 1st thing i thought was "oh its clips about the tsunami that happend a few years ago"
and then O_O omfg its in japan and its happening now.
all i can say is that i hope the death toll does not go much higher and that i pray that the people there can get themselves through this hard time.
My condolences to all those who died in the earthquake
Some trolls are happy the disgrace of a country if you do not like the world we live do not commit suicide because I assure you that no one will remember. The United States should be the first country to be destroyed by one of the largest producers of child pornography in the world. Cren why his country has no sin? are stupid or do not want to see!!!!
Now, aren't you generalizing a bit (too much) you little nazi... for the record, the ones that suffer the most in these kind of tragedies are usually the good ones, the hard workers on the fields that lose everything they've ever worked for, so you may not feel sorry for those perverted psychos, but you could at least feel sorry for those most unfortunates.
You know, I'm from germany, and I've a big problem if you call "something like that" a person from germany. Even in our darkest hour (believe me, every country has it, even today) we weren't as low as it.
...Sexual disgusting shit?
GO TO HELL, DIPSHIT!! SATAN'S WAITING FOR YOU!
he prob is a he bitch
sad thing is you'll be there too, being his/hers/its bitch XD
in memoriam, for all those people who have died, or are going to die due to this disaster.
and my deepest condolences for those who have lost family, friends or a loved one.
on a slightly brighter note, UN and EU have already begun collecting money and material to support the rescue and care for the Japanese people.
Yea I heard both US and UK troops are coming over. So in all honesty even though the US is public enemy number one for a lot of reasons in this day and age, I'm glad our troops can do something productive instead of adding to the death toll.
The problem with our country's broadsword military is that it is a single tool for a single purpose, therefore adapting to a change in purpose is as difficult as changing a sword's direction mid-swing, which is why the middle east issues have thrown us for a loop. Our initial military barrage was the swipe to cut off a head. Then they were told to use the sword as a scalpel to put on a different head... metaphorically speaking (meaning to assist in rekindling a government).
However when the 'swing' is in the direction of caring for those in a disaster, we strike just as powerfully in the opposite direction. The best part about this is we're dealing with a country where corruption may be present, but isn't like third-world nations' governments, and bribery isn't necessary to get the money where it's needed to assist in disaster relief.
Hate to say it, but you may be right in the sense that this may remind people the US doesn't just use our power to destroy. A necessary reminder these days...
This isn't a holocaust, not even close. This is a horrible disaster.
The US helps everyone in the world. Partially why everyone hates us. They like to use Iraq but the world hated the US before that simply because we help everyone, we have the money to do so, and people are jealous of it.
Who gave the most money and aid to the victims in Indonesia? The USA.
Who gave the most to Haiti? The USA.
People hate those who show them up. The USA shows up everyone else. However, countries can't just come out and hate us for helping other people. It would make them look bad. So they twist the information about Iraq and the Middle East and use it to make themselves feel better and put the USA down.
Same shit happens in the USA. Poor people hate the rich, yet the rich are the ones who keep all the charities up and donate the most. Look at Bill Gates and how much he donates to help people all over the world but people hate him simply because he is rich.
Fucking jealously is so stupid.
Largest economy?ok but.....
If China,Japan,Brazil,Venezuela, among other countries broke, the usa broke together.
This is absolutely horrible. This is a holocaust, no less.
Why don't you marry that friend (girl) who takes out of her food money. Why don't you marry her, hold her down, kiss her, hold her etc etc etc?
@Anon 17:18
Some issues with what you said. Actually LDC used Holocaust correctly. We in the US are emblazoned with the word in terms of Hitler's ethnic cleansing. But Holocaust's actual dictionary definition does in fact mean disaster. It's an issue of our connotative definition based on our ridiculous history classes overshadowing the real word's definition.
And you must be kidding yourself if you think the rich keep the charities up. Bill Gates did what he did because he had an awakening and recognized he didn't believe what he was doing with that much money made any sense. Ten bucks says his wife was part of that decision. Anyway, what keeps charities alive is small donations from large amounts of people, not large donations from few. Large donations help, of course, but they are not the backbone of charity's success.
And the US is in many ways rightfully hated for our foreign policy. We are arrogant, insidious cocksuckers when it comes to the rest of the world. You know why? We cannot respect others who are different. Even if we don't like what they do, we can still show respect on other aspects, yet we usually do not. It's hilarious how that is, considering we're a melting pot. We dictate how people should think. While enhancing womens' standing in the world and making certain leaders help their people is one thing, we also try to strong arm many leaderships behind closed doors into doing our will. Just research. You'll find out why we're hated across the middle east. You may think they're stupid people, but that's our arrogance at work again. Many of them are more knowledgeable about the world of cause and effect than any random person you could speak with here.
@Anon 17:18
Who has the largest economy in the world?
The USA
So it's little wonder that they donate so much.
Get your ideas straight - I have no heart for anyone with a huge amount of money donating to charity quite honestly. They have the money to do it comfortably and still live in luxury. Want to impress me? Be my friend, who earns little more then a 100 quid a week and still tries to pay about a tenner per week to Concern. She literally takes money out of her food allowance to allow for that. That impresses me, not giving a cheque to charity and then in the same cheque book buying a few yachts.
Just a side note; want prejudice against the US to stop? Take your heads out of the sand and realise that you do nothing but aggravate situations in the Middle East. Countries like Iraq do not need fucking democracy stamped on them. They need to be eased into it.
god will u shut up its ppl like u that causes problems for the world...
sadly...it's your kind of ppl that cause war and hatred...
quit this sumerian god trolling, it's not funny.
aww come on...
stop saying all this bullshit or i might start to think that you are Ishihara in disguise
What!!This troll again? If you really hate'em than try not to express it on a site that promotes japanese anime culture. The reason you know this site means that you LOVE anime so much.
There are more pedophiles and rapists in other countries than Japan. Your just fucking blind.
Girls should be married young. Certainly at puberty. Men should have sweet young little obedient brides.
Why are you against this?
When will feminism end?
yeah, problem is you are next dude.
got motion sick from watching videos on youtube...stop the shaking...
Some trolls are happy the disgrace of a country if you do not like the world we live do not commit suicide because I assure you that no one will remember. he is just lonely and wants attention like the rest of the trolls.
Sorry, couldn't hear you with that cock in your mouth.
Dude, wherever you're from, your country does it too.
Every country is a little bit kinky.
anon 8:33, 8:35, 9:03
manga and anime is fucking real!
