Otaku throughout Tokyo and northern Japan are reporting heavy casualties as the region was wracked by a massive magnitude 8.9 earthquake, one of the most powerful in recent memory.
Many suffered toppled figures and found manga volumes flung from their shelves, with heavy casualties reported amongst figures flung from loftier displays. The cleanup is expected to take many hours.
Fortunately, Internet and electricity services were all but unaffected, allowing visual reports of the casualties incurred to be circulated quickly – some of the scenes recorded may be disturbing:
The main earthquake was intensely felt in the otaku heartlands of the Kanto plain, and several large earthquakes and near continuous aftershocks continued for many hours after the initial quake; coastal areas in Japan and beyond also suffered considerable inundation as a result of tsunami.
However, although large even by Japanese standards, disruption is expected to be transient and significant damage appears only to have been suffered in a few particularly hard hit localities – not least Sendai, severely flooded by tsunami, and by such ill-fated structures as Chiba’s oil refinery and the Tokyo Tower:

Property damage is heavy indeed. I wonder if Artefact is OKAE
Well considering he wrote the article...
I suffered a small box sliding off my kitchen counter.
Aside from its ridiculous intensity, what was most interesting about the quake was the weird rolling motion which continued some time after the shaking stopped.
oh you are living in japan.
Now you make me want to experience an earthquake like sensation myself.
Im in Taiwan and we get Earthquakes to. From my experience, its not a sensation you want to experience. Its not only scary, but its so sudden that it puts you in shock. its hard to move when you are in that state of shock.
Weird rolling motion? Wasn't it you rolling and being weird?
Holy~ Artefact impersonating Victorique?
those weird rolling motions are like the ripples in a pond. and yeah... it feels like a very unnatural state for the ground to be in. so 'weird' is right :P
Rofl? :S
Must be your internal gyroscope still shifting from the quake.
But glad you (and your box) are fine.
I felt it too, it sorta like what it feels to be on a boat for a while, then when you get off the boat, it still feels like you're on the boat.
I was in a Don Quijote in Shinjuku at the time when it happened. They always stack shit to the ceiling, stuff was falling everywhere there.I was in the Party Goods section at least, so the worse that could've happened was a maid outfit falling on me. Tons of stuff on the floor afterwards though.
And Sankaku lowers itself even more! this is definitely tasteless and insensitive.
what next go to the injure and asked them if they hurt?
really bad taste.
That's why you don't take the figures out of the box.
To be honest, I was not as distressed about the earthquake until this article. Now, I can begin to empathize.
And Sankaku lowers itself even more! this is definitely tasteless and insensitive.
what next go to the injure and asked them if they hurt?

I agree completely. Some perspective is needed here, to hell with the figures, manga, and stupid nik naks, get to worrying about your fellow human being!
And as for K-ON seiyuu, Mio-chan reported that she's fine.
Nothing known about the others, though.
Like your penis
... What do you think Otaku are? Creepy North American comic collectors? The purpose of figures in Otaku culture is fapping, not collecting.
happy day for those guro figure lovers then
I am glad I live in a place where there is no earthquake or any other natural disasters....yet.
Keep in a box!?
Its for the very purpose of displaying(especially for figma) with many poses I can come out each week.
Fapping!?
Please don't stereotype all the otakus.
DAMN YOU MOTHER NATURE! What did those figures do to you?!
damn nature, you scary!
Karma's a bitch. This might be a way for nature to tell us that ishihara and the other guys should stop running for gov.
Maybe karmas telling you to stop jerking off to anime.
Maybe your a troll
No maybe's about it.
well they come from oil...so...nature provides, nature brakes.
pities goes out to businesses that didn't have valid insurance policies in effect.
And pities for the insurance companies that aren't able to pay off claims.
This is gonna be a big mess & a long long time to recover from.
All those broken figures, *sniff* Who will love them now?!
Well the process for getting and treating the petroleum used to make the figures is pretty hard on her.
Those poor expensive figures. D;
NOOOOOO!!!! not Miss Sakaki!!! she was my first love. *sniff, sniff* :(
the figure companies:"Just as planned"
If they plan to re-release every figure that has suffered a casualty then yeah I guess they could get some moar money. Otherwise lost treasure is lose ;_;
hm (to be seriosly) .. better lost treasures than lost lives.. :/
link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598
currently 32 deads and many missed. fire near at nuclear plant.
@re-release I think so.
The anime/manga gods are mad at Ishihara's blasphemy.. the end draws near
ISHIHARA DIED IN THE QUAKE FOR HIS PUNISHMENT
"..better lost treasures than lost lives.."
Hmm.., I need to agree with that. At least if you survived, you'll still be able to get the upcoming released new figures in the future.
Then again, I just watched BBC news.. quite amusing to see a footage showing staffs in a grocery store protecting their stocks on the shelves.
@maidniac hm to be honest, I'm feel little bit nasty because I hoped that the whole artists and seiyuus are alright... and not the whole people. ._."
... I wonder if my dad's OK :|
Anyways, the casualties should not exceed the ones seen in Christchurch. Then again, the Japanese government tends to respond extremely quickly during crises such as this. From the looks of things, the building infrastructure overall looks pretty good for an 8.9 magnitude earthquake. My guess would be that the epicentre was in fact a little ways from the coast.
Economy is more screwed now. Oh man, why did this happen now? It's around evening now. The casualties will definitely rise.
The families and friends have my condolences.
YourTime : So you'd rather have your stuff break to pieces that you've invested quite a sum of money to, instead of some random people dying who you didn't know ? People die daily but you don't care about that either so why care now.
As long as my stuff, my favourite seiyuus/anime studios are okay, nothing else matters.
Wonder what happened to Ishihara's rape novels XD
Even with Japan's discipline and initiative against the forces of nature, it's still sad to hear the loss of lives.
I don't wanna be the one saying this but I hope nobody's gonna take advantage of the situation.
To twist your view a bit against you in a similar manner to what you did:
So you would rather die than have someone else's figures break then?
The point is your goods get destroyed or your life is lost (or someone close's etc...). Which would you prefer?
It's about 600 Missing people from what I heard on CNN.
To Anon 22:04
I hope you die begging for your life and people step over your shitty carcass.
DETOLF fail...
If all my stuff were flying around like that, especially the figurines, I don't think I would bother cleaning up. :|
what is detolf?
IKEA glass shelves in pic12 and 13
More room for new figurines.
But not Ikaros, she was the sole survivor while all those robots were destroyed (image 015). So this is the power of an angeloid...
one thing you also gotta remember is that this also hit the figure manufactures aswell, so hopefully they didnt get hit too hard. i would hate to wait for my precious Kirino.
Fund raiser time. 90% of revenue goes to relief.
the figure companies:"Just as keikaku" -fixed
Note: Keikaku means plan
Keikaku dori(Just as planned)
Keikaku doori XD
That's just annoying :P
Nooooo!!!! JAPAN!!! Whos Gonna Make My Anime!!!
Devastating Indeed.
Somewhere outside of Japan some fat collector guy is probably posting his NIB figures on ebay with a very high reserve price.
there isn't much one can do except to pray for the best for them
Why is it that Arte, didn't mention which pics were of his own abode?
And Sankaku lowers itself even more! this is definitely tasteless and insensitive.
what next go to the injure and asked them if they hurt?
really bad taste.
Agreed. There are at least 200 dead so far and most of Tokyo has lost power. This is one of the worst quakes ever recorded.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Sendai_earthquake_and_tsunami
Depends on your definition of Tokyo... Power is doing ok.
My thoughts goes out to every victims and families in japan!
Be strong!
Sankaku had an article about Japanese media behaving badly in New Zeeland recently. Now Sankaku is doing as badly by taking figures as most important things to worry about, when real human lives is on stake
This tsunami is worse than that in Thailand was some 5 years ago, if you don`t understand. Material devastation certainly is worse.
Edit: BBC just said this was THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE Japan has ever felt! We don`t know the real magnitude of this disaster yet, because connections are bad just now. I fear what will be reported.
Yes, i understand that "taking figures as most important..." is meant as joke, but what has happened is not. It is for real.
Even a funny guy must understand when it is time to keep jokes for himself.
finally someone illuminated enough o understand. there are moments in life that by no means are mean to be taken lightly, much less as a joke.
Kudos erochichi. you are one intelligent Human being.
Nah, he's fucktarded. Humor versus sincerity standards vary.
you'd be shocked to hear the humor of people in disasters
Yep, I like the web, but the figurines pics were absolutely out of place.
*drops deathnote
it really works... ishihara is gone...
he is?
So where do we sign up to get a job rebuilding there?
Totally agree. Man I can´t believe it...
lol
goddamnit yourtime, this is a tragedy, so stop making me laugh.
