Manga fans supply a ranking of the manga they feel most likely to be useful in gleaning some understanding of history from.
The manga listed are likely to be of particular interest to budding “rekijo” – female history otaku, an affliction apparently common as it has managed to pick up its own name – although anyone who can stomach endless retellings of the Chinese classics (see below), Genji or assorted tales of samurai and crossdressing is likely to find something of interest.
1. Sangokushi (Mitsuteru Yokoyama)
2. Genji Monogatari (Tatsuya Egawa)
3. O~i! Ryōma (Tetsuya Takeda)
4. The Rose of Versailles (Riyoko Ikeda)
5. Asakiyumemishi (Waki Yamato)
6. Kōu to Ryuuhou (Mitsuteru Yokoyama)
7. Phoenix (Osamu Tezuka)
8. Suikoden (Mitsuteru Yokoyama)
9. Adolf (Osamu Tezuka)
10. Vagabond (Takehiko Inoue)
The total absence of the likes of Vinland Saga from the list is rather problematic to say the least, although the exquisitely illustrated Hyouge Mono’s omission can probably be excused.

I thought Vagabond was only loosely based on the legend of Miyamoto Musashi?
It's highly dramatized and not really an accurate biography. At least that was my impression.
I don't believe that there is much that will tell you about his life, excepting his own written works (which usually focus on strategy... or at least my copies do).
Oops, failed to log in first, and can't delete anon comment. If a mod would like to do so, it'd be appreciated.

Actually it's loosely based on a novel loosely based on the legend of Musashi. But most of this list is equally loose interpretation anyway.
that's a loose post you got there
Where's Hetalia?!
Hetalia doesn't even come close. It's 10% WWI, 90% Fangirls making up the fanbase with their doujinshi.
I'd say it;s 5% WWI and some other background stuff, 90% fangirls doujinshies and 5% of characters made up relationships for material for fangirls doujinshies.
sad to see dragon ball z didn't make the list.
I bet most people don't even realize it actually really is based on actual Chinese history... but that goes for Dragon Ball only. Z has nothing to do with Journey to the West anymore.
There is no history in DBZ, it's just loosely based on Journey to the West.
No way... Must go eat cheesecake to quell my tears from this news.
Avoid these! If you are not careful you might learn something heh.
The wisdom follows me wherever I go...
But I'm too quick to get caught.
you mean well of wisdom ?
SHOGUN, GAIJING Were awesome in their historical context, Oops they are books ... fail :(
Also Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto not so historical as for AWESOME story..
triti
Missed Hakuouki and Rainbow
Nah, I'm pretty sure they were limiting themselves to series that are actually GOOD.
Plus, I'm pretty sure the Shinsengumi didn't actually fight vampires.
And another rabid anon fangurl detected <_<
Lol true Vampires ha-ha ya remembers now
Suikoden is realy helpfull for history? new to me.
Yeah it is lol
Its not the same story frome the konami game, imbecile.
It's the japanese name of Water Margin.
Whut, no Ruroni Kenshin?
I was thinking the same thing.
Vinland Saga is really a Great miss on that list... Until I read it I didn't know that England was invade and coquered by the vikings...

That was me... I was sure I had the Autologin on...¬¬
Not knowing that isn't normal to begin with. Seriously the lack of knowledge people have about european history is incredible these days, and i'm not english (and not from some scandinavian country either).
And don't forget that not long after the era depicted by Vinland Saga, the Norman conquest of england was a conquest by vikings too, even though they speak French. During their golden age, Vikings have always watched England, and always took it each time.
Well anyway, this ranking is crazy, I don't understand why Suikoden is here >_>
People, take advice from this! Phoenix, Adolf, and Rose of Versailles are all masterpieces. You're missing out if you don't try them.
I learned my history from Hetalia, which is probably why I know nothing except that Americans are fat and loud.
11. High School of the Dead. very historic
Buddha could also be counted I heard it mostly accurate. I remember Inoue said that you shouldn't look at his manga as a 100% retelling of Musashi's life.
What about Sengoku Basara. / sarcasm
i learned a lot of medieval history cause of the sacred blacksmith.
Well, Basara teaches you that historical figures from hundreds of years apart all exist in the same time frame. Also, there are rocket launchers, tesla coils, laser cannons, Zero fighter jets and flying robots in 15th century Japan.
Yokoyama Mitsuteru is a great Manga writer.
What about Historie???
Totally underrated. No one cares about it besides it being by that guy that did Parasyte.
Though yes, Historie is much better than some of those up there.
Yes, Historie is awesome. Although that fucking stirrup is anachronistic (lol manga).
I'm a sucker for Romance of the Three Kingdoms stuff--in fact, how I got into Chinese, and later Japanese, history was through the Warriors series from Koei. I might need to check out that Sangokushi manga.
I was thinking more along the lines of Akumetsu.
Phoenix taught me everything there is to learn about the 25th century, you know.
for a blink of a thought there, the moment i saw Adolf's name, I thought Hitler was into manga XD
suikoden huh? i thought that was only a game
somethings wrong here I dont see Sengoku Basara
ARE YOU READY GUYS.
Definitely obsessed with Vinland Saga. I heard of Vagabond but didn't get into it. I'll have to look into a couple of there works
Damn I always thought the past was like Sakura Wars.
The first thing I thought upon seeing this article was "If Hetalia is on this list I'm going to rage harder than hard."
I am pleased.
Good job, Manga fans.
What? No Code Geass?
