Japanese gamers have been presented with yet another perverse week of game sales – this time with IdolMaster 2 bombing with a pathetic 36,000 sales, but still better than the pathetic reception top PS3 blockbuster Killzone 3 received, with only 26,000.
The weekly sales figures for the last week of February, showing healthy sales for Disgaea 4, and distinctly unhealthy sales for IdolMaster 2 and Killzone 3:
1. Phantasy Star Portable 2 – PSP – 11/02/24 – 206,654/206,654
2. SD Gundam G Generation World – PSP – 11/02/24 – 192,981/192,981
3. Layton & The Mask of Miracles – 11/02/26 – 3DS – 119,591/119,591
4. Disgaea 4 – PS3 – 11/02/24 – 79,425/79,425
5. Nintendogs+Cats – 3DS – 11/02/26 – 64,213/64,213
6. Sengoku Musou Chronicle – 3DS – 11/02/26 – 49,327/49,327
7. Super Street Fighter IV 3D EDITION – 3DS – 11/02/26 – 44,649/44,649

10. IdolMaster 2 – 360 – 11/02/24 – 34,621/34,621
11 Rune Factory Oceans – PS3 – 11/02/24 – 28,939/28,939
12. SD Gundam G Generation World – Wii – 11/02/24 28,119/28,119

15. Winning Eleven 3D Soccer – 3DS – 11/02/26 – 24,556/24,556
16. Sengoku Musou 3 Z – PS3 – 11/02/10 – 24,075/290,712
17. Catherine – PS3 – 11/02/17 – 21,183/163,008
18. Yu-Gi-Oh Over the Nexus – DS – 11/02/24 – 21,002/21,002
19. Marvel vs Capcom 3 – PS3 – 11/02/17 – 14,821/82,008
20. Rune Factory Oceans – Wii – 11/02/24 – 10,495/10,495
For historical comparison purposes:
Disgaea 3 – 55,000
IdolMaster Live for You – 44,000
Killzone 2 – 41,000
Whether the colourful fan reception of IdolMaster 2 is actually the cause of its low sales is somewhat in question – in Japan the Xbox 360 is barely capable of supporting sales of any great magnitude, and now plays host only to a handful of international ports and niche groping simulators.
In any case, Bandai’s canny use of DLC, character goods and mixed media probably makes the initial sales of IdolMaster a far less pressing concern than with a conventional game – although the same can not be said for the unfortunate publishers of all the international mega-blockbusters the Japanese mysteriously refuse to have anything to do with.

For the US we would see the direct opposite. Because in America, excessive violence is a good thing, while slightly raunchy, non-violent titles are usually seen as harmful. Oh, the irony.
SD gundam outsold KZ3. I'm sorry, this is japan we are talking about.
They do not love FPS like america.
On other news, the rest of the world doesn't give a shit.
I hope there will be an american version Q_Q!
I think the real news here, is that GUNDAM outsold Killzone3
you do know that Gundam is way more famous in Japan than some "unknown" western franchise rite?
"Honestly the fact that Killzone got so high is a miracle on its own"
lol that comment is filled with so much fail, all I can do is facepalm
Thats the point
Idol Master is actually a popular game
Honestly the fact that Killzone got so high is a miracle on its own
Make songs and idols ~ ♪,
not war ~ ♥
But in IdolMaster:Xenoglossia the idols pilot mecha, so you can make songs, idols and war all at the same time...
If it's to save the world from "moon drops", by all means, yes!
On another note, I think Kyuubee's day job is as a producer...
Would you like to form a contract with me and become an idol? ◕ ‿‿ ◕
Preferred his day job as a recruiter, until "that" happened.
And face of the true (d)evil ◕ ‿‿ ◕
I would totally buy Idol Master if it had an English release, but I have no plans to buy Kill Zone.
So I see how this happened. You like pretty anime girls way more then British space natzi's.
Megi, you are a genius!
FPS aren't that big in japan and the fact that killzone 3 has sold almost half of the killzone 2 is pretty good considering it's only been out for a week.
Which is why I keep wondering why they bother to keep releasing these games there. They have to be losing a ton of money on them.
26000 x 60 = 1,560,000
Yeah, they lost a shit load.
How much did the localization, additional QA for localized version, rights negotiations for assets such as songs, publishing agreements, package design, physical pressing and packaging, advertising and distribution costs cut into that?
I doubt they are losing much money.
Killzone is Sony's IP, it was more or less made for the FPS obsessed US market, with US and EU sales as the primary way of recouping their cost.
Releasing it in Japan is just icing on the cake where they only have to recover the localization cost.
Leave the war and brutality to the Western world. Japan can handle songs and idols. (And molesting lolis.)
Well if IdolMaster had gone with more yuri this mess would never have happened.
Yes e can!
Killzone 3 sold over 500,000 Worldwide... so Japan sales don't mean shit. lol
Japanese people hate FPS bcoz they got no real gun to play around with
More like, Japanese people are afraid of being a little "macho" once in a while. Meanwhile, I went through the game's campaign twice.
Visually, I'd compare this to Mortal Kombat... which makes CoD look more like Super Smash Bros or something. KZ3 sure is full of violence... and people getting their eyes destroyed.
That's silly... I got some real guns, then stopped playing FPS because... it's boring as hell. (So are real guns...)
I think it's got more to do with how famous the genre is for weak stories. Without a reason to care, shooting "bad people" is akin to stacking blocks in tetris: it's only fun until you start doing it mindlessly.
Sure there are FPS with good story telling, but I guess Japanese just no longer care to give the genre a chance.
Not surprised. Since japan hate shooter and love dating sim and ero games.
Well it is Japan, no reason to point out that Killzone 3 isn't sellin' really well there.....
At this point, nobody's suprised.
It proves Japanese are playing Xbox 360 still?
They'll just produce less in the future and carry on.
Yay, i finally got it yesterday :P, and now you can pause the game to choose between the choices that have the countdown xDD. (is a big help to translate ^^U)
Sees Gundam goes Want lol
fail to see whats bad about the idolmaster2 sales, its just a stupid otaku game on the 360, it was never going to be a huge seller.
as for killzone, typical sales for an fps in japan.
we all ready know they're pervs
this is not news
Meh, figures.
just shows you how different east and west is. and that's not a bad thing :P
Seriously, you people get hooked over this lame idol master shit? What a waste of polygons. Thank goodness that we don't have this in America. Imma gonna get back to mah Call of Duty. HEADSHOT, HEADSHOT, BAM, BAM!
Colonel Radec doesn't give a damn! Col. Radec loves to kill! Killzone!
Well, since when have Japanese shown interest in FPS games in any way comparable to western audiences? [other than Homefront].
Plus KZ3 is pretty meh, gameplay is fun but story and characters are excrement.
LOLOLOLOL
There was heavy marketing in Akihabara when I visited there for Idolmaster. And besides, killzone 3 looks lame.
The Japanese game market has been a lost cause for years now. It's a joke.
As for Killzone 3, it's technically astounding and quite possibly the best looking game so far this generation. If you like shooters, you need to own it.
Yay for IdolMaster! And um.. The #1 game is "Phantasy Star", not "Fantasy Star". It's an easy misinterpretation, I know.
Phantasy star portable 2 also has a touch of moe. :D
It can't be a surprise that sales are down with the 3DS software sales raping the chart.
catherine is losing steam and fast!
note that the im@s2 exclusivity is the only thing saving 360 from utter disgrace
The Moe is mightier than the Gun :3
