Catherine Sells Quite Well

catherine-gintama-by-satomi

Despite crushing weakling gamers with its “impossible” difficulty, ero-block pushing game Catherine has sold quite respectably across both platforms, managing 166,027 sales in its first week.

The Japanese sales figures for the week in passing:

1. Catherine – PS3 – 11/02/17  –  141,826/141,826

2. Marvel vs Capcom 3 – PS3 – 11/02/17 – 67,187/67,187

3. Sengoku Musou 3 Z – 11/02/10 –  58,089/266,637

4. Monster Hunter Portable – PSP – 3rd 10/12/01 – 39,727/4,289,349

5. Tales of the World 3 – PSP – 11/02/10 – 26,504/248,572

6. Two Worlds 2 – PS3 – 11/02/17 – 24,324/24,324

7. Catherine – 360 – 11/02/17 – 21,936/21,936

8. Marvel vs Capcom 3 – 360 – 11/02/17 – 13,779/13,779

9. Hakuouki DS – DS – 11/02/17 – 13,373/13,373

10. Gyakuten Kenji 2 – DS – 10/12/09 – 13,186/176,362

Given the somewhat mixed evaluations the game has received, the strength of the Persona brand (notwithstanding the fact that the game is only “spiritually” part of the franchise) and the sexiness of Catherine probably have much to do with the game’s success.

That future full-scale Persona RPGs on the PS3 probably depend on it having at least modest success likely also played a role in its favourable reception…
