Eco-terrorist band Sea Shepherd’s harassment of Japan’s “scientific” whaling activity has paid off – the Japanese government has cancelled the hunt, being too gutless to do anything about their attacks.
Sea Shepherd’s latest attacks differed little from their previous efforts – their replacement vessel “Gojira” fouled the propellers of the whalers and bombarded it with various projectiles.
The Japanese ship was immobilised in Antarctic waters and subsequently sent out an SOS, which was unsurprisingly ignored by Sea Shepherd.
The whalers subsequently limped home, their hunt cancelled, and as ever the Japanese government weakly denounced the incident as “regrettable” but did nothing – the Japanese foreign minister had this to say:
“We cannot forgive this dangerous and illegal intimidation of our perfectly legal survey activities, which endangered the lives of the crew, our property and the ship. It is exceedingly regrettable.”
He threatened to consider cooperating with other nations to prevent any future obstructions, but stopped short of actually taking any action.
Sea Shepherd for its part announced it was “delighted” the Japanese ran away and vowed it will continue attacking their ships until they stop their foreign ways.
As the only likely means of stopping Sea Shepherd’s attacks would involve a Japanese ship intercepting their vessel and arresting them for criminal activity on the high seas, it seems singularly unlikely that anything will be done.
Critics of the administration can’t help but notice a “regrettable” pattern developing in Japan’s international relations.
In the case of a Chinese fishing vessel ramming the Japanese coast guard, China suspending certain exports and kidnapping Japanese nationals, Russia announcing it will be basing a small invasion fleet in the disputed Kuriles and now Sea Shepherd hounding a Japanese ship from international waters, the response in each case has been to call the events “regrettable” and do absolutely nothing.
Under such circumstances even Japan’s crazy rightists might concede it wise to give up whaling altogether, if only to prevent further humiliation and thus invite even more efforts to wring concessions out of Japan’s unbelievably supine government.

The hypocrisy of using violence to end violence hasn't escaped my notice but I think it's justified if the initial acts of violence are deemed legal and are unlikely to end using peaceful means. If the law fails to protect innocent creatures then the law should be taken into the hands of the righteous.

I don't condone what the Sea Shepherds crew is doing but I think Japan is kind of over stepping its bounds too.
Everyone else is trying to protect these species and they keep exploiting a loophole in the law for money. That is not only distasteful but outright corrupt behavior.

There is something fundamentally special about whales that most of humanity recognizes, and it's that thing that unconsciously makes us realize that killing them just does NOT benefit us as a species, or the planet. They are humungous ocean mammals. It's not a coincidence that whales and dolphins give off a sense of awe and majesty to us, because they are both higher consciousness beings than most other animals.
While Sea Shepard is a bit extreme in its methods, in my opinion it's no different really on a global scale than what the farmers on the American border to Mexico are doing. Most of the rest of the country laughs at Arizona or Texas about the border, yet they don't realize that families are murdered by border crossers as well, and they have no protection. So they formed a militia under constitutional right to protect themselves in the place of the government who does NOTHING for them. Only an idiot would call that racist. This is literally people invading American borders. It's not about what race they are or whatever, it's about drug trafficking, murder and legal right to be a citizen and earn your place in society.
At some point we must stop just being lazy fuckers about all the things that are happening around us that shouldn't be happening. Border crossing without penalty shouldn't keep happening, it's just like cutting in line on a massive increase. You just don't do it. And while Sea Shepard are self-righteous and a little unfortunate in their methods, I cannot help but respect that they're taking risks most of us are too cowardly to do in the face of what we believe in. I do want Japan to stop hunting whales with such abandon, and based entirely on a lie.
Hopefully this will lead to some form of realization that whaling really isn't necessary in time.

Technically, yes, every conquest is illegal from the perspective of the conquered. The winners write history, and it's unfortunate.
