Rarely has an anime commanded such interest and acclaim, without resorting to sex or moeblobs at any rate.

um... At last? I've seen plenty of animes with little to no sex appeal. Kaiba (the series) makes sex DISTURBING, and the creepy nature of the show makes any appeal non-existent. GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class is pretty much an informative show about art school, no sex appeal at all. Kobato manages to be heartfelt and peppy without any need for any fan service. Yeah it only happens once in a blue moon, but those shows ARE out there, and honestly, it's the freedom of sexuality in anime that makes it more enjoyable than most other animated features. the fact that they can integrate ecchi moments into a series without anybody (non-retarded) up at arms is one of the things I wish western medias would take notes about.

The Scriptwriter is important, very important as a matter of fact, but so is the Director, as they oversee the whole process and and make the final decision on what makes it in to the Anime or not. So in that case, Akiyuki Shinbou deserves just as much thanks. And since SHAFT wouldn't be what it is today without Shinbou, SHAFT (and specifically Shinbou) deserves as much thanks as Gen Urobuchi.

GEN UROBUCHI was also in Arakawa under the Bridge so he was well underneath Shaft's hand before Pullea Magi.

However even though he's a fantastic writer, Shinbou is just as good.

The Music... The Art Direction is amazing compared to other stock-standard Magical Girl Anime.

Also the Limbo scene right out the end they just ripped Art Style Part out the game and turned it into an excellent part of the anime, signifying change and death just like the game.

*stares at the last 3 pictures*

Looks like someone's turning into a Witch...

Why do you all think that when a Witch dies, they leave behind a Grief Seed..?

I have a theory that when a magical girl's wish is warped, she slowly goes insane, thus grieving and grieving until she falls into despair and becomes a Witch...

If a Grief Seed recharges a Magical Girl's energy, it must mean that the Grief Seed itself has energies similar to that of the Soul Gem's (which is the Magical Girl's soul, since their bodies are mere husks)...

I'm also speculating that a Soul Gem turns into a Grief Seed upon a Magical Girl's fall into despair and insanity...It may take time, but the results will be the same...

Also, Kyuubee can apparently use telepathy to induce severe pain to any magical girl that makes a contract with him if said magical girl pisses him off...

Some of the wishes made to him by those girls he has made a contract with (especially wishes involving safety, saving self/a family/loved one from death) tends to fail, with said person/family member(s) still getting killed...

Thus, my speculation from the last article about him remains...

Those poor girls made a deal with the devil...Who apparently eats the empty Grief Seeds of Witches...

Kyuubee is the same as the demon, Mephistopheles...

Both appeared as cute little animals and made a contract with the person with their lovable appearance and honeyed words...

For those who need more evidence (and missed this from the last article):

Actually it isn't that their soul gems get drained and that they get recharged by grief seeds. The soul gems get slowly corrupted and the grief seeds feed on corruption and absorb the corruption to cleanse the soul gems. That is why Witches cause people to commit suicide so that they can create more corruption to feed on. This means that Kyubey feeds on corruption which means that likely he is the one producing the corruption that gets into the soul gems. The soul gems get weaker as the magical girls use magic which allows the corruption in. (a weak person is very susceptible to corruption) If the corruption keeps accumulating in the soul gem the magical girls will eventually start turning into witches.

    Hmm, it makes sense...

Although I was off about how they become Witches, we both agree that Kyuubee ain't the cute little critter he claims to be...

    Episode 7 CONFIRMS that...

Also, he resorts to violence just to keep a secret in said episode~

Him touching that Soul Gem causes severe pain to a certain girl...

Another fantastic episode. Truly a fantastic Anime, Beautiful to look at, great plot, and thrilling action scenes.

However, to those using this show as an excuse to bash Moe, a few words.

First, if you think that this show is Moe-free, you are out of your mind. The character designs and their traits are impossible to ignore. They have the cuteness covered, they have the "urge to protect" covered thanks to the ghastly things that happen to these Magical Girl zombies, and almost any other draw of Moe you can think of. Not to mention, it is literally impossible for any Anime to be completely free of Moe, since everyone has different things that would ignite their "intense passion or interest" or "Moe" and people find different things Moe. Moe can be found wherever there is a passion or interest, so it is imposible to escape.

Second, you wouldn't want All Anime, or even all Magical Girl Anime, to be like Madoka. Things like Madoka, Bakemonogatari, and Evangelion are subversive only because the things they do are not done often. A subversion is a subversion only because it is a rarity. If all Magical Girl Anime were like Madoka, you would be begging for a change in the opposite direction. If all Anime was like Madoka, you would be begging for more light hearted, sweet and/or comedic fare, or more so called "Moe-Centric" fare.

Also, Madoka maybe great, but I wouldn't want all my Anime to be as cynical and dark as Madoka. The real world depresses and angers me enough. If everything was dark and cynical in fiction as well, I would have jumped off the Manhattan Bridge a long time ago. Not everything should be dark and cynical, nor should everything be lighthearted and optimistic. With one you can have greater apreciation for the other.

Both dark, cynical, and subversive works done well are great, just as much as lighthearted, optimistic, and so called "Moe Centric" shows done well are great too. Anything executed well is entertaining, and well worth watching. So just sit down, watch, and enjoy.

I reckon the 2nd season is still better than the movie 1st, Even though the budget per minute of the movie is higher than the 2nd season, resulting in jaw dropping animation, the second season is not far from such fight scenes.

The second seasons raw plot line and handling of its characters and their decisions are what pulls the 2nd season ahead of the movie 1st.

    A's > movie1st > Strikers => 1st season

Sadly, StrkerS had far too many issues with it to be considered anything above average.

I say A's is the best of the original series, with pretty good plot, pacing, character development and action.

The Nanoha Movie 1st however, is undeniably the most spectacular work to come out of the Nanoha franchise so far. It takes the original series and literally strips all the flaws from it and turns the epic dial to 11.

I found the entire Nanoha series to be pure drivel, except for A's, which I enjoyed. I don't understand how people can like the first season and StrikerS when it was poorly written, poorly presented, cliched, and holds no verisimilitude. Yes, I am well aware that Nanoha is set in a fantasy world, but that doesn't mean they can't make things believable, or succeed in making me suspend my disbelief. For some reason, only A's could do that for me.
