Meet the New Face of Kaneda…

Leonardo di Caprio’s Hollywood adaptation of classic psychic blob anime Akira will apparently star James Edward Franco as Kaneda, with the previously reported Zac Efron having proven unavailable.
There will also apparently be not one but two movies, as the work has been split into two parts based on volumes 1-3 and 4-6 of the manga.
There is no suggestion his character will be called Kaneda, and as the story has been shifted to the streets of post-apocalyptic “New Manhattan” the only remaining connection to the original appears to the outline of the story (if left intact) and the title of the movie, which may no longer refer to any character left in the film.

At least James Franco is a really good actor. Thank fucking Christ it's not Zac Effron. I'm a lot more concerned over Hollywood's need to make everything PG-13.
"How's that pie???"
"SO GOOD..."
He'll still be Hobgoblin to me...
You, me and most other people who watched all the spider-man movies...
You obviously have yet to watch 127 Hours
Holy shit! Uber OLD!
They RAPED Akira after all!
PG13 akira.
Well just imagine the anime like that.
Yeah. its gonna suck.
@Alan and I'm more concerned about Hollywoods seeming desire to ruin -every- good manga/game property out there.
hmmm... maybe a good thing then that halo got canned... just wait for gears or mass effect... (looks back at both tomb raiders with regret)...
While this movie will still probably turn out horrible, I have the slightest sliver of hope. James Franco is a damn good actor. He did a great job in 127 Hours.
and he got the academy award best actor nominee, now that's a start..
It's not about the actors, but about the creative crew and the decisions studio executives take to push films to a broader audience.
I know Franco to be one of the best actors at the moment(with little chance to snatch an Oscar this year), but even DiCaprio may find difficult to convince executive producers that a potential R-rated movie will kick ass in the box office.
Too bad what it's going to happen to The Kings Speech once it receives its award. And by the way, I told you Franco would be "Kaneda".
It's a bit difficult to say how this would turn out. On the one hand, this could turn out very badly due to the amount of changes they're making, or it could turn out decent if they do it right.
Of all the western movie adaptations I've seen, Speed Racer was a pleasant surprise to me in that it was actually enjoyable.
I understood going in that there would be changes. A lot of them. But the thing about Speed Racer was that despite the changes, they managed to somehow keep the spirit of the show intact.
Insane races, family of racers and mechanics fighting an evil organization that wants to take over the world by racing, evil ninjas, how the good-guys and family-values will always win in the end, etc. They even kept the fucking kid and chimp sneaking all over the place.
There was no way to do a Speed Racer movie as a serious film, so they they instead went wild with it while still keeping it smart and somehow making it relevant to today's society.
The Akira movie can be good, IF, and I do mean IF, they get the right people with the right mindset to do it. There will be a lot of changes, but the most important thing is that they preserve the spirit of the original film.
If they can do that, then they would have succeeded.
Sure, he'll make a superb job acting out the questionable scripts unrelated to the original work. He'll manage to pull off exactly what the manga-raping scriptwriters intended.
i totally agree james franco might make this work
Aye, as long the scriptwriter dont insert chanting of Kaneda and Tetsuo throughout the movie

It doesn't matter if there are good actors, all you need is a shitty script....look at some Uwe Boll movies, In the name of the king has loads of good actors....poor poor film.
Hollywood. Killing one japanese classic at a time.
Japan does that all the time.
Yup. We should be blaming 3D. Live-action adaptions suck.
I agree with Anon 14;33, I wouldn't say they all suck but generally they do, especially those done by Hollywood.
I actually liked the live-action of Death Note more than the anime/manga...
Yes I did カンチ, especially the change they made in The Last Name concerning L. Still sucks that Light's fate is the same though.
Heh...you most have only seen the first film. You are telling me you enjoyed both?
Hollywood, don't you get it? It doesn't matter which actors you change it to. What matters is that you stop doing stupid $hit like this.
was akira a classic? animation wise not manga.
i found it overly confusing, and the story to be poorly told, in the animation. i don't know about the manga, i assume its better...
is it a classic because there was not real competition or because it was really that good?
It broke new grounds by all means, and the manga and film's the stories unfold differently. This was the creator's intent from even before the manga got serialized.
Truth to be told, the story in the anime sucked donkey ass.
While it deserves to be called a classic due to its technical excellence for its time and its role in getting the anime market rolling in the USA and UK and a bit later in a few european countries as well, the story wasn`t exactly a high point.
But that`s mostly because the manga presents enough material for a tv series, so even when the movie only contained a certain part of the story it was still too convoluted for its running time.
The manga is a whole other experience and goes a lot more into detail as well as continuing the story after the part the movie presented.
It`s only 6 volumes long, but that fact kinda belies its length since each volume has about the size of a telephone book and it really pays off story- and logic-wise.
Splitting the content into two parts might be the only rational decision hollywood will ever make on this project.
While I don`t have much hope for this, at least DiCaprio was rumored to be somewhat of an anime fan in his childhood, so the rape might not be as bloody as most people expect.
Still leaves all others involved to screw up, since a hollywood movie involves so many people the actual director or scenario writer usually have way less influence on a mvie than they should.
I for one hope Japan made them pay up enough for the movie license to possibly finance an Akira-TV-series anime that follows the manga, then something good would come out of this regardless what hollywood does.
i guess it depends on your mindset, if you're mature enough to be watching it or not. i certainly wouldn't let my 10yr old nephew watch it, even nowdays with all the violent shit he does watch on tv simply because he wouldn't understand what was going on...
the manga is very political, something that you do see shine through in the movie of course, but there is something more of a human side to the books that you just don't have the time to put into 2 hours. it took me a good 10 days to really read the books, not just glance at them, but really take the images in, savour them as the story telling devices that they are, see all the fine details... hell, if i re-read them today i would probably read it as a whole different story, mainly due to the fact that i read them almost 8 years ago, i don't think the same as i did back then and the world has shifted over to all new political views entirely, even in this short a time.
that being said, i don't think the story is any less relative nowadays than when it was originally written, or even introduced to the cinema, both in japan and abroard. there was alot of political tension back then, and the threat of nuclear strikes from foreign countries was very real in some parts of the world and japan as a disarmed nation was at the mercy of those that would be it's protectors or destroyers.
i feel it mirrors how japan felt as a nation back in the eighties, just starting to find it's feet in the economic market and where the world might head if nuclear war did break out between america and russia. as a nation it had plenty of hero's and monsters, but i feel this is the first non-mainstream movie from japan to hit the world that didn't require some dude to wear a rubber lizard suit or a giant fire breathing turtle (i love gamera by the way) and that is where it gained popularity in the western world; people could take in a more mature film from japan with a plausable story line that made you think something more than "holy shit, did you just see what the fricking dinosaur did to that city!"
It was quite a good story, especially for the time, but even now it still holds up. The intention though behind it is a little convoluted even to me. I need to re-watch it so I can piece together the parts I DIDN'T understand when I was younger.
really, never read the manga, i just thought that the movie was an adaptation of it like so many manga to movies were back than, either a synapses or a full adaption to cash in.
ill admit that the animation was fucking great for it, but was the story really that good?
Sickens me that people refuse to fess up to Black Swan/Inception ripping off Perfect Blue and Paprika 100% on movie sites.
So much so it almost makes me want to give train wrecks like this movie more "credit" which is a SCARY thought..
^Totally agree with you...
LOL what? Try again.
Go suck more anime dick.
*sees OP pic*
Last time I saw Kaneda, he was a JAPANESE teenager...
Apparently he turned into a 32-year-old bearded American...

Oh Hollywood, never change. I'd hate to see what happens when you actually do a series justice.
The Apocalypse would happen, and then no one would see it.
"KAAANEEEDAAAA"
"TETSUOOOOOO......you wanna hit dis shit!"
so whats wrong with casting an asian?
Nothing, as long as you are making a movie in Asia.
BUT, since it's Hollywood, that means Asian males don't exist, unless they can kung fu you to death, slice a Predator in half, be a computer nerd, or drift a car.
None of those roles fit into an Akira movie, so say hello to a white or black Kaneda character renamed as Jimmy or something.
or go on a crazy trip to whitecastle/guantanamo bay
With a last name of tracer or tracker, sci-fi channel last name favorites.
James Franco's a pretty good actor. I can dig.
I don't think it will be bad. Unlike Dragon Ball which have the character design as one of the signature of the series, Akira signature lies in the post apocalyptic cyberpunk-ish setting and the bike.. both are perfectly replicable for live action.
Of course there's the title Akira. Now, they are using western actor (a good one) to play the Kaneda role, they should change the 'Kaneda' name to a western name fitting for his looks. As long as they don't change 'Akira' name, then it should be perfectly fine. Even Akira himself doesn't look too Japanese, so it shouldn't be to hard to swallow (at least for me) if it turns out they use someone with western looks to play the Akira part.
The most important part is the story. Unlike Dragon Ball which is your standard good guys vs bad guys with a predictable story, Akira actually have a good story. As long as they stick to the original story it should come out good. Basically, stick to the original story, give it a good cyberpunk setting, don't mess too much with the signature bike, then it should be golden.
From all of the announced or rumored manga/anime to live action adaptation (outside of your usual dorama), Akira looks like one of the best bet to actually become a good live action movie. Of course then I remember Blood the last vampire... :( But hey, that is a low-ish budget production movie and Akira should have a high-ish budget and at least a decent actors, so I really hope that it will be a good movie.
But you know, no one will stick with the original recipe given the circumstances of Hollywood and the western audience it caters...
But as long as I get to see some tits in a certain scene, and a giant blob of human flesh, I will be happy...
Oh, and a certain chick getting crushed by said giant blob of human flesh...
Main point I will see Akira Live -action:
* Tits shown in a certain scene in the movie
* A certain someone turning into a gigantic blob
* A certain girl (violently) killed by said blob

They could do much much worse than James Franco. The guy's a decent enough actor who appears to act for the sake of art as opposed to just collecting a paycheck. Imagine if they cast someone incapable of acting such as Paul Walker, or some boy band singer like Justin Beiber or Zac Efron, or crap rapper like Lil Bow Wow.
As for casting an Asian actor, things just don't work like that in Hollywood. Male asian actors in main character roles is like running across the proverbial unicorn, as in it never ever ever happens (well, unless they stoop to typical crap stereotypes and cast him as a martial artist, samurai, or thief). Asians don't exist to agents in Hollywood unless they have boobs or nunchucks.
Hell, I would be surprised if they even named the damn movie Akira in the first place.
I wonder if, like the DVD release's 5.1 soundtrack re-dub, they'll end up pronouncing his name Canada?
The re-dub was horrendous. Bring back the original voice actors and the guy who did Leonardo's voice from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!!
i reeeally hope people here don't have only this site for their news fix. almost everything posted is unconfirmed or a flat out untruth, this being the former.
Akira is already at Hollywood budget production standards. This is kind of nonsense.
The next victim? Battle Angel "Alita". Perpetrator? James Cameron (too bad studios trust him a lot to drop cash into this gimmick-creator).
Hollywood arrogance strikes again!
"If it ain't broke don't fix it". Not everything needs a live action adaptation into a Hollwood "craptacular". Can't wait to see how James Cameron the "Gimmick Master" fucks up Battle Angel Alita.
