Dragon Ball fans have firmly buried their collective faces in their palms with the realisation that 2012 may well be the end, for their precious manga if nothing else – a second Dragon Ball movie adaptation is apparently in the works.
Known only as “Untitled Dragon Ball Reboot” so far, information is thankfully scant – protagonist Son Goku will supposedly be played by Jon Foo, known for roles in a number of mid-profile action and martial arts movies.
Direction is by Takashi Yamazaki, a director with a number of Japanese movies to his name, under the auspices of Paramount Pictures for an estimated 2012 release.
The much reviled Hollywood adaptation was itself supposed to have a sequel in the planning stages, so just where this leaves each project is not clear; however, with not one but two potential new Hollywood adaptations things are not looking up for fans of the franchise.

So, are they trying to fix shit up by fetching an actual Japanese director? Also, that guy who played Jin in the Tekken movie is involved now? I always thought he has the face of an Asian Mr. Bean(those who watched Street Fighter Legacy would know what I mean).
I just think that the whole premise of Dragon Ball cannot be carried into live action without sacrificing too many elements that made it what it is.
"I just think that the whole premise of Dragon Ball cannot be carried into live action without sacrificing too many elements that made it what it is."
I respectfully disagree. The problem with making a live-action adaptation of anime, manga, cartoons, comic books, etc. is not with the premise but with the filmmakers' mentality. No matter how silly, strange, childish, or weird the subject matter might be, you need to take it and its fans seriously and respect the original subject matter. That's why you can get "Watchmen" on the one hand and "Batman Forever" on the other.
It's not inherently unfilmable, it's just unfilmable because everyone involved looks down on "Dragon Ball" as mere "kiddie fare" that is beneath them and unworthy of their respect.
Perhaps the correct term would be "unjustifiably filmable".
Interesting that you brought up Batman. It's precisely because its atmosphere is close enough to post-Miller Batman while appealing to the crowd that it's such a success.
However, how if they decided to adapt and respect the sixties campy Batman? Except really die hard fans and nostalgia guys, who would watch it, then? How would one justify investing on a very faithful adaptation of that Batman?
i think that dbz is unfilmable, at least for a live action movie.
i haven't read watchmen, so i cant speak to why that is supposedly unfilmable. but batman was easily filmable, hollywood just had to get their shit together.
but dbz. you cant make your own shit for that, otherwise its shitty, so you need source material. there is also only so much that you can do in one movie too. think of a manga arc that started and ended fast... their really isn't one. so the only way to deal with it would be to throw the audience into a situation cold, and the only material in dbz that would be worth a movie to see, would be before the time jump.
and id say the best movie would be the north base and the red army section. don't bother to much with setup, don't bother to much with overly explaining, and you may have a live action movie of dbz that is faithful to it that isn't childhood rapeingly bad.
Well, the current Batman movie series preserves enough elements from comic book continuity to appease the fans by showing that the filmmakers did their research in spite of having taken some pretty extensive liberties with the source material. Compare and contrast this with Michael Schumacher's films where you had an adult playing Robin, nipples on the Bat costumes, built-in skates in the boots, and Tommy Lee Jones and Arnold Schwarzenegger hamming it up as Two-Face and Mr. Freeze, respectively. He evidently thought that the material was a joke and didn't take it seriously, so neither did audiences.
As for the campy 60s Batman, oddly enough, that WAS a faithful adaptation of the 50s and early 60s Batman before the character was revamped and taken back to his grim and gritty roots in the mid to late 60s and early 1970s. By the time the TV series came out, the Batman that was being portrayed in it was already a few years out of date.
As for adapting and respecting the campy 60s Batman, it still boils down to taking what you're doing seriously. The made-for-television movie "Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt" did have affectionate flashbacks to the making of the original show and didn't treat what they were doing with utter disdain. Hell, so did that adult movie "Batman XXX: A Porn Parody", for that matter, which not only recreated the sets, vehicles, and costumes almost perfectly but cribbed entire lines from the show and hired lookalike actors and actresses. Hell, the porn actor playing the Joker even had a fake mustache that was painted over with white makeup just like Cesar Romero's was.

Honestly, if a friggin' PORN MOVIE can take seriously the very source material that it's parodying, it's utterly incomprehensible that Hollywood can't do a straight adaptation of nearly anything. :P

he is only half Asian
at least some is better than none I guess
but besides that...
how much worse can it get compared to the first one.
Yeah! John foo couldn't be a proper jin! and of course~ not GOKU!!!!
John FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU!
ahahaha... i like that~
Srsly, That Tekken movie would have been perfect if they had removed jon foo and that fakeass Kazuya.
*crosses fingers for the main character to be a black actor*
Samuel L. Saiyan, anyone?
It's over nine motherfucking thousand!
KA ME HA ME GET THESE MOTHA FUCKEN SAIYANS OFF MY MOTHA FUCKEN PLANET!
I motherfucked LOL'ed!
@ anon 1:41
Speaking as someone who's never seen a full episode of Dragon Ball in his life, I wouldn't say the movie was completely unenjoyable, if you kept your expectations low and skipped all that highschool shit at the beginning.
The doppelganger fight wasn't half bad, anyway. Did something unexpected.
WIN! would pay to see S.Jackson say that.
I want to see him as Popo instead.
Now, if the movie was really like that, it would be so horrible that it's actually enjoyable. There is a line of ridicule where once it is crossed, then it becomes entertaining because it's so horrible. Alas, the dragonball movie was not the case.
@ anon 01:53
as canon popo or team fourstar popo?
Motherfuck, Vegeta, what does the motherfucking scouter motherfucking say about his motherfucking level?
[9001]
MOTHERFUCKING NINE THOUSAND?! THERE'S NO MOTHERFUCKING WAY THAT CAN BE MOTHERFUCKING RIGHT!!
dragonball motherfucker, do you have it?
I've had enough with these motherfucking dragons on my motherfucking balls!
"What planet are you from?"
"What? What? Wh - ?"
"What" ain't no planet I've ever heard of. They have Dragonballs on What?"
"What?"
"Dragonballs, motherfucker, do you have them?"
"What?"
"Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you motherfucker, say what one more Goddamn time!"
What? Jim Carrey as Vegeta and Patrick Stewart as Frieza?
Epic.
But...Zac Efron isn't black...
I'd be up for a movie about Adjutant Black.
Samuel L Jeckson. That would be badass.
no no no.. recently, he and nicholas cage are hollywood bad news..
Change those pairings to Keanu Reeves and Milla Jovovich, then that fact would make sense.
Reminds me of the main protagonist,Goku; just when you think he's dead for good, somebody revives him and he's alive again.
Except this time, people WANT him to stay dead, for good. LOL
In the Dragonball universe death was only a minor inconvenience.
But he's still dead now in DragonBall Z, and DragonBall GT does not count, it not canon.
If GT is not canon then so is Z, therefore Son Goku is not a saiyan and never died.
That doesn't make a lick of sense. The DBZ story was actually based on the manga, whereas Toriyama had zero input on GT.
"Dragon Ball Re-Rape"
Not satisfied raping it the first time i see.
Maybe it was just me, but when i saw the fight scene with Neo and Agent Smith in the last Matrix movie, i thought man if they can have those two flying and doing slow-motion punches etc, why cant they do a decent Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z movie. Like you guys are saying it probably comes down to the fact that its looked down apon as a kiddie franchise and no real funding will go into it :(
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I just hope the kamehameha won't be a gay wind blast.
I just don't know anymore.
LOL Hahaha... That Guy looks like Rustom Padilla an actor in our country who later admit he's GAY then start wearing weird woman's clothing.
No wonder why in 2012 is the end of the world.
It could be good if they keep more to the characters as they should be.
Also the story they should get rid of a lot of the comedy and large animals granted it won't feel that much like dragonball
but Make a movie out of the Raditz eisodes or King Piccolo episodes
DB evolusion was horribly done, the worst thing about the movie however was they couldn't even stay in character...
Goku going to high school? WTF!!!
Goku saying "I don't think I can do this..." I beg you parden? WHAT?! WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY SMOKING!!!
That very Quote just show how little the movie crew even knew about Their stuff...
If a movie like this they better just make it a fan video it would get better feedback
Please stop this madness, It's murdering Toriyamas work.
They're just killing great series the DB movie wasn't so great at all...and I doubt the sequels will make any good movie either..."Anime, Manga, some Comic can never be made into a good movie!"
Zordon must be rolling in his aquarium :(
Pretty section of content. I just stumbled upon your blog and in accession capital to assert that I get in fact enjoyed account your blog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing to your augment and even I achievement you access consistently rapidly.
It appears a sequel will happen.

And yes, IMDB DB reboot is FAKE.
