Puella Magi Madoka is scary. It shouldn't be labeled as "Magical girl". Something like "Fucking scary evil demon takes your soul" would be more fitting

I also suprised at the first time watching this anime.....
But....
It has a good point for originality though....
The fact that it has more thriller elements and is not just another typical magical girl show is what makes it watchable.
Magical girl shows are normally pretty childish and stupid, so having a dark element is helping it get away from that.
Agreed. The time of happy-go-lucky is over, we need something dark to show that you can't always win and save everyone... Sometimes the "good guy" dies...
... as an avid Magical Girl person, I think that the silly childishness is just a part of the genre (in the same way how a horror genre must have suspence). Besides, we need a genre that essentially tells people "everything turns out well in the end", and the magical girl genre relatively delivers.
Also, as a Shaft fan, I love how they essentially decided "Hidemari Sketch gets infected by Zetsubou-sensei in a magical girl esque plot GO!", and the results are EXTREMELY beautiful and amazing.
I have to agree, this is probably the least childish mahou shoujo anime ever, then again it is not made for kids either,Mami's gruesome death is proof enough.
I would love to see the age range they were actually aiming for with the show. I know first manga is considered Seinen which is 18+, target audience not rating.
It's actually a step back (a good one IMO) if you really think about it. Alot of modern western 'fairytales' have rather dark and scary origins if you dig back far enough... and that's not even touching the asian ones. (Take the Disney stuff for a very good example, the old original stories as a whole scared the hell out of me when I found them.)

This is truly a mahou shoujo anime; although, it may be dark, it still have every noted quality of one... Which allows it to take a path not yet taken in the genre...
And this is why it's better than most of the other magical girl titles.

Not quite agreeing, but I don't think there's a lot of anime where girl characters pass to oblivion just like that.

Shaft so dark and interesting.
When you find a magical girl candidate, you turn her into one on the spot. Questions come later. Giving her a choice just leads to angst not to mention breaks tradition. Magical Girls are about rainbows and hearts and sparkles, dammit. Oh, and magic too.

Though, seriously, I don't get why she simply doesn't make a contract with the wish "I wish witches would no longer exists". Or alternativily find someone else who also makes a contract and get her to wish for an unlimited supply of grief seeds and then wish for witches to disappear. You get to be a magical girl AND you just took care of problems associated with it.
TBH I looked at the first comparison and thought that the commentary would be about how dark the shows are.
Madoka may look similar but its vastly different and its actually good.
Pleiades is better.At least the characters are not too fugly to make you puke while watching the show.

They're similar probably because all 3 of them rely on common tropes to build their scenarios on. I wouldn't know, really. I don't watch much Magical Girl anime and I haven't seen these. The only one I've seen and loved is Princess Tutu. Cardcaptors was, unfortunately, chopped and spliced too much for much of an opinion but was still good for what became of it in the State.
