chengdu-j-10.jpg

A Chinese state news broadcaster has apparently been caught passing off dogfight footage from the Hollywood movie “Top Gun” as footage of China’s latest fighter jet destroying a target drone in a live fire exercise.

The aircraft in question, the Chengdu J-10 (or “Jian Shi” – “Annihilator 10”), is China’s latest multi-role fighter jet, introduced in 2005 and officially claimed to be “completely Chinese designed” but in fact based on a mixture of Israeli and Russian design and technology. A number of the aircraft have been lost due to malfunctions.

China Central Television broadcast footage of the J-10 supposedly blowing up a target aircraft on a news programme, but Chinese net users soon noticed the 2 second clip they presented as the latest glory of the PLAAF bore a striking resemblance to the classic Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun,” showing an F-5 (standing in for a fictional MiG) being blown to bits by an F-14.

The comparison images they prepared demonstrate the similarity – the CCTV footage is on the left, Top Gun on the right:

chengdu-j-10-vs-top-gun.png

It is not clear whether CCTV actually have permission to use clips from Top Gun in the first place, adding copyright infringement to the mix.

Another distinct possibility is that the military itself provided the footage to CCTV thinking neither they nor the Chinese people would know any better.

Whatever the case, China passing off pirated Hollywood footage of US aircraft as the triumph of its own “indigenously designed” jet is probably the ultimate (so far) in “made in China” irony.

Only in China does infringement not matter to the government when it's for their sakes, but will sue whoever infringes them mercilessly

China is not China, it's just a name that's given by foreign countries. The real name of the country is 中國.

Which apparently is very telling. "Center Country", in other words the name is symbolic of their arrogance. They really think they are the center of the world. It's not really all that flattering because at least China sounds nice.

Ironically, you just demonstrated your own ignorance. China was called the "middle kingdom" because of its geographic position, not for any egocentric reasons. Throughout most of history it was usually referred to by the individual names of the various dynasties that ruled it.

But hey, if it makes you feel better about your own stupidity, keep judging others on false presumptions.

They can't have made that assumption through geographical position alone. Even in the past, they have always held themselves as the center of the world, just as many other countries in the past. It means that they aren't the only ones to hold that belief but it doesn't stop the name from coming off as a giant "up yours".

Well, then all Americans should be so embarrassed that they have to stay home all the time because all the embarrassing things their Government did and still does. For example killing innocent civilians in Iraq, Afganistan, racist policy in the past, the KKK, the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal, Guantanamo Bay, and many more.

Maybe when they blow up thousand year old statues of the Buddha because it an affront to their own fucked up thinking. Now there some real enlightenment.

Lots of planes crash but when a country has to take footage from top gun because they can't get decent stuff any other way, I think that says all that needs to be said.

And whenever I read something about "chinese quality" the story about the kid whose chair exploded and shot shrapnel up his ass and he bled to death in agony pops up in my mind, and that also is all that needs to be said.

There are actually plenty of videos of J-10 shooting down target drones during excersizes. They just don't look nearly as good as the stuff Hollywood pyrotechnics could cook up. (RL missle hits are actually pretty boring. Mostly just smokes and every little flash) And hey, it's also cheaper to just copy and past what's already been made than have the military spend time and money to make their own advertisement.

I call bullshit. I don't know Chinese, nor do I have access to their news channels, but I suspect of epic bullshit.

There's got to be something wrong here. I don't believe the Chinese military would do such an obviously ridiculous thing, if this is true, this was just the idea of CCTV, but even that seems suspicious.

Did CCTV *really* broadcast this? Is this April's Fools *year* in China? Does CCTV *really* even exist? Couldn't this be all an elaborate prank that language barriers distorted into being passed as the truth?

Since I'm lacking so much context I have to research myself but this is too hard to believe at this point...-_-
