A Chinese state news broadcaster has apparently been caught passing off dogfight footage from the Hollywood movie “Top Gun” as footage of China’s latest fighter jet destroying a target drone in a live fire exercise.
The aircraft in question, the Chengdu J-10 (or “Jian Shi” – “Annihilator 10”), is China’s latest multi-role fighter jet, introduced in 2005 and officially claimed to be “completely Chinese designed” but in fact based on a mixture of Israeli and Russian design and technology. A number of the aircraft have been lost due to malfunctions.
China Central Television broadcast footage of the J-10 supposedly blowing up a target aircraft on a news programme, but Chinese net users soon noticed the 2 second clip they presented as the latest glory of the PLAAF bore a striking resemblance to the classic Tom Cruise movie “Top Gun,” showing an F-5 (standing in for a fictional MiG) being blown to bits by an F-14.
The comparison images they prepared demonstrate the similarity – the CCTV footage is on the left, Top Gun on the right:
It is not clear whether CCTV actually have permission to use clips from Top Gun in the first place, adding copyright infringement to the mix.
Another distinct possibility is that the military itself provided the footage to CCTV thinking neither they nor the Chinese people would know any better.
Whatever the case, China passing off pirated Hollywood footage of US aircraft as the triumph of its own “indigenously designed” jet is probably the ultimate (so far) in “made in China” irony.

LOL! Oh China...
Only in China does infringement not matter to the government when it's for their sakes, but will sue whoever infringes them mercilessly
China is China is China!
China is not China, it's just a name that's given by foreign countries. The real name of the country is 中國.
Which apparently is very telling. "Center Country", in other words the name is symbolic of their arrogance. They really think they are the center of the world. It's not really all that flattering because at least China sounds nice.
Ironically, you just demonstrated your own ignorance. China was called the "middle kingdom" because of its geographic position, not for any egocentric reasons. Throughout most of history it was usually referred to by the individual names of the various dynasties that ruled it.
But hey, if it makes you feel better about your own stupidity, keep judging others on false presumptions.
They can't have made that assumption through geographical position alone. Even in the past, they have always held themselves as the center of the world, just as many other countries in the past. It means that they aren't the only ones to hold that belief but it doesn't stop the name from coming off as a giant "up yours".
china strikes again!
Theres a never ending stream of this kinda crap from China.
Always very entertaining and its also one of the things that will be keeping them from fully becoming part of the developed World.
China and their hypocritical antics. They ban things from other countries and at the same time, they pirate them.
usually i would be irritated at this point, but for today i am just amused
very amused
It's CCTV,and as usual the Government does not know anything about it!
CCTV is like the throat of the government in China. They mean nothing different to us. We hate them too.
Looks like they're flying highway to the dangerzone of copyright infringement.
Next up, slow motion videos of bare to the waist PLAAF pilots playing volleyball to cheesy rock music of the 80s...
lol thats funny i need to watch this movie now :p
"A number of the aircraft have been lost due to malfunctions."
I guess that is where the chinese design came in....lol
Lies on top of lies on top of lies on top of lies.
Christ. If I was a Chinese citizen, I'd be embarrassed. The good Chinese citizens have to contend with this bullshit from their own government.
Most of the Chinese citizen just laugh it off whenever their government do something stupid anyway
if only it was Tom Cruise in that plane that blew up. then it would've been epic.
he's such a fudge packer.
Well, then all Americans should be so embarrassed that they have to stay home all the time because all the embarrassing things their Government did and still does. For example killing innocent civilians in Iraq, Afganistan, racist policy in the past, the KKK, the Abu Ghraib Prison scandal, Guantanamo Bay, and many more.
Oh do you mean like the Taliban does when they behead innocent people and stone women for supposed adultry or because they're not wearing a burka. Maybe when they blow up thousand year old statues of the Buddha because it an affront to their own fucked up thinking. Now there some real enlightenment.
Go look in your own closet before you look in mine.
What makes you think we Americans have to stay home all the time because we are "embarrased"? We travel the world all the time just to make fun of your shitty ass countries and make YOU feel embarrassed. Seriously. No matter how fashionable for you butthurt losers to hate America, we don't give a flying fudge. We'll always do what we do and your butt will always be hurt.
theres is nothing funnier than american family on vacation. Fat parents, kids with adhd, creepy girl and her slutty older sister. om nom nom nom
Look at the rest of the world before you look at us.
Its not embarrassing if you never hear about it.
Chinese citizens get spoon fed whatever the government want to tell them and anything else is foriegn propaganda.
You do know that even US airforce lose aircrafts due to malfuctions right? And not to mention all the Blue Angel crashes.
Lots of planes crash but when a country has to take footage from top gun because they can't get decent stuff any other way, I think that says all that needs to be said.
And whenever I read something about "chinese quality" the story about the kid whose chair exploded and shot shrapnel up his ass and he bled to death in agony pops up in my mind, and that also is all that needs to be said.
;-)
There are actually plenty of videos of J-10 shooting down target drones during excersizes. They just don't look nearly as good as the stuff Hollywood pyrotechnics could cook up. (RL missle hits are actually pretty boring. Mostly just smokes and every little flash) And hey, it's also cheaper to just copy and past what's already been made than have the military spend time and money to make their own advertisement.
Take my breath away.
It doesn't make any sense! Maybe my opinion about this is too ethnocentric, but I really don't understand it. What was the reason for China to humiliate itself again? Please someone from China explain this to me.
as usual America will just bend over and take it because they're trying to avoid war. It's that whole anti-American song for Obama thing again. They're insulting th USA because they can get away with it
It's more mature to simply brush off juvenile attempt of an insult than actually dignifying it with a reaction. It was a cheap shot from China, but hey, Kids will be kids, no need to get worked up on it.
OMG an Anon with some sense...... *Watching for the sky falling now*.
Why should America care? Are they going to try and get China to pay royalties for the usage of the film? This is all about China embarrassing itself, America is silently laughing.
Please read the article again. Why? It clearly says that the Chinese net users noticed what CCTV did with the top gun footage and post the pictures for comparison to prove that themselves! This time it not the Japanese were pointing it out, it the Chinese net users themselves!
I call bullshit. I don't know Chinese, nor do I have access to their news channels, but I suspect of epic bullshit.
There's got to be something wrong here. I don't believe the Chinese military would do such an obviously ridiculous thing, if this is true, this was just the idea of CCTV, but even that seems suspicious.
Did CCTV *really* broadcast this? Is this April's Fools *year* in China? Does CCTV *really* even exist? Couldn't this be all an elaborate prank that language barriers distorted into being passed as the truth?
Since I'm lacking so much context I have to research myself but this is too hard to believe at this point...-_-
Uh, China quarity propaganda answer your question?
@yuriphoria
if it were an upstanding country being accused of this, you would probably be right. but for china it is just their antics again. there was an article on sancon just a few before this where a dude named ishihara claimed young people had no culture. if this is their idea of culture, maybe that's a good thing.
CCTV channels does exist. If you get cable here, you get a lot of Chinese channels too. Must have missed this.
Can't be worse than the american tool that passed "lost" pilote episode scene as some real aircrash footage.
Does China really exist?
It saves cash, nuff said.
"Whatever the case, China passing off pirated Hollywood footage of US aircraft as the triumph of its own “indigenously designed” jet is probably the ultimate (so far) in “made in China” irony."

Seeing things like this makes me wonder just how "stealthy" the chinese stealth craft is.
Someone from China? OK, I'm here.
They did broadcast this on the national channel, this sence can still be found on CCTV official net tv site, I can give you the URL if required.
Aside from it being way too ridiculous, it's truth. Shame on you, CCTV.
I'll tell you why. Because they either don't have a fully-functional prototype, or they didn't even went past bluesheets with this project.
@Anon 22:28
Humiliating USA? That makes no sense, the only one they're humiliating with this is themselves.
Clearly what happened is that the People's Republic of China produced such a fine piece of technical engineering that the dirty Americans retroactively stole their footage and put it in their movies.
Those damned thieving Americans!
Those wolves and jackals you mean.
Highway to the danger zone~
