The batteries of Sony’s newly announced “NGP” cannot be changed, purportedly in an effort to stymy pirates who previously used the battery to hack the original PSP models.
The unit is as stylishly designed as it is sealed tight:
One method of hacking the copy protection on the original PSP to enable piracy involved the use of specially modified batteries (the batteries contain additional circuitry as well as the actual battery) – the sealed battery of the NGP is suspected to be part of an effort to make such hardware hacks more difficult.
The combination of a”4-5 hour” battery life and the inability to change the batteries seems unlikely to be well received – and if the 3DS is any guide, a recharge time of some hours can be expected, making the device rather less portable than might be hoped.

question: is it rechargeable?
and why 4-5 hours?
don't they know that a game a day keeps the crime away~
I'm gonna go ahead and assume you meant eroge a day instead, but of course its rechargeable(?)
^ And rightfully so. Since it's stupid and counterproductive, let alone false.
I thought the "eroge prevents crime" argument was banned by the Strike Witches creator?
I want my 'load' to be rechargeable fast too...
Strict gun control in the States.
I lol'd.
Nah I don't know. Here's one thing.
I disliked chargeable batteries for the current portable machines because, well. It didn't support "portability" so well when it came to batteries. If there are no socket, or you forgot your charger, you're screwed. You canæt buy a new battery.
But not allowing to charge as well is not really fun. Why can't we just have both? :V
I think it will be *eroge-able* though localized version NGP games might be hard to find, better off importing your eroge titles.
In the sense that most people mean it, it's as false as anything could be; but in a certain light, it's very true.
If you make it illegal, the people who want/have it have to go underground to get/keep it, which means they're breaking the law.
So TECHNICALLY, making it illegal WILL mean for crimes and criminals; much as the situation is with marijuana or over-strict gun control in the States.
Isn't the purpose of portable gaming mainly for when you are in transit or waiting for something? Unless you're over a flight across the pacific or the atlantic, why the fuck would you worry so much about only 4-5 hours of game time? Don't tell me there's no outlet in your house =_=
I just don't get my friend Sony at times, it can do the downright stupidest things for no really good reason & it is sad, this killed a bit of the PSP2's hype, but will not hinder it's sales too much if at all...
No, it's not rechargable. Every five hours you needta buy a new one. ^^
"question: is it rechargeable?"
What?
Also 4-5 hours is pretty adequate. Yea surely it will be better if it had a longer duration but being serious... 4-5 hours of straight gaming outside, why the hell did you even go outside in the first place?
Even with the short ass battery life of my PSP I still find it adequate enough for me to reach an outlet to recharge.
This is bullshit. Later PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 never had their batteries hacked... Only PSP-1000 and early PSP-2000. Make better excuses Sony.
There is nothing wrong with the Battery Life but is something wrong with the Battery being sealed inside the system, preventing it from being much use for too long after you get it or if something goes wrong...
I don't think 4-5 hours is terribly bad for a handheld gaming device, but it's certainly not as convenient as the 10 to 20 hours offered by the DS Lite. I suppose the 3DS probably won't be significantly better, but we'll have to see the real-world battery life, rather than these potentially conservative estimates.
More worth noting is what will happen when the battery starts to lose its capacity after a few years. If its not replaceable, you might be stuck with a couple hours of charge, and eventually won't be able to use it away from a power source. I do see what appears to be screw holes on the back though, so I'm not totally buying that it's "sealed tight". Most likely, you'll just have to dissect it to get to the battery, unless they have it soldered to the motherboard or something.
By the way, are these photos supposed to show the "PS3 level graphics" they were talking about? They really don't look much different from the 3DS, except not in 3D. :|
I go through a total of 3 hours of travel a day, from home to work and back. Sometimes more, depending on sidetrips I might do since I don't always go straight back home. Considering that, 4-5 hours wouldn't always be enough. I have no doubts that there's thousands out there who do even more travelling than I do, and I'm just talking regular daily schedules, not actually leaving the country for tourism.
I have no such problems right now with my DSi XL, of course. This baby can easily last over 12 hours, just as long as I don't push the brightness settings too much (which I don't need to, since I can play just fine on the second lowest brightness level).
Sounds Like an Old Ipod welded in battery they should have advertised it better
Runs cold or something ^^
Hoisted by your own petard Sony.
Why did your PSP battery have additional circuitry in the first place?
Why not just a +ve and a -ve like you know a batter?
Eh?
Eh?
Ha Har!
the additional circuitry = microchip + some memory to hold the charge state, number of cycles, whatever. It could be reprogrammed with a special code that was leaked. Later models probably can do it too but need a different key.
Sorry no, it's NOT rechargeable. Once the initial battery life runs out, you throw the whole thing away and buy a new PSP2.
"question: is it rechargeable?"
quite possibly the dumbest question amongst the noobs of the world, and that's saying a lot.
Never heard of sarcasm? Idiot
They should take a lesson from old consoles and just go back to standard AA batteries.
Yeah, that way I can carry as many charges as needed. An individual set of my favorite NiMH batteries may not last as long as the built-in lithium ion type, but at least I can take several sets and change them as needed. Also, I'd suggest AAA.
Incidentally, if you have Wii, you should be using nothing other than NiMH.
Now, a lot of you are using the "charging packs" with the nifty holder that can charge them just by setting them in that holder, but almost ALL of those are just NiMH wrapped in plastic to disguise the fact you can get the same thing in walmart's camera section for a lot less.
But they got money selling batterypacks in first psp
But those were heavier than bricks.
LOLZ.... That a good one. Never thought you have weak arms considering the number of eroge one sankaku member plays...
In contrast, it's like a console device: N-Gamecube, PS3, etc....
Well, in Apple's case, they have a good reason for making the iPhone battery non-user-replaceable. They want you to buy a new iPhone when the battery finally craps out. It's a proven money-making tactic that has paid off every time they come out with a new "advance" in their hardware design, or to a more gradual extent, every time they come out with a new OS.
LOL it's not the pirates fault Sony put one of their service devices in every single PSP that exists. I guess it's also now the hackers and pirates fault that they fail at cryptographic algorithms huh?
This is really a problem for me. As you probably know, batteries tend to shrink in capacity over time even with proper use. In a year, if you'll play often, you'll probably have 2-3 hours of fully charged battery, and it will continue to shrink. I'll obviously will want to buy a new battery.
Perhaps they could be changed in a certefied service centers?
hello jobs, what are you doing at sony? come here kitty, go back to apple... ya thats a good kitty. >_> man, my ass your pirates. If they want to pirated they will do it either. -.- don't damage your fans because of the bad man. where are we? at the military?
Oh god, please shut up.
4-5 hours of battery life plus the fact you can't change the battery itself, I guess Sony should provide the buyers with a backpack loaded with a car battery+inverter to serve as a mobile charger.
Wha way to fail at engineering and get your priorities screwed up Sony.
I mean really I thought only Apple could fuck up so badly.
They could of umm used a power controller with it's own uC thus eliminating batteries as a hack but lets face it anything can and will be cracked.
So now pirates will need to OMG use a screw driver.
Really Sony doesn't seem to get it that you need to strike a balance between preventing piracy and making a good user experience.
If your treat the honest users like criminals and fuck them over and they'll leave in droves.

LOL why you mad? Don't buy one then. And as an owner of a previous PS system, I have never once felt screwed over.
Like thats gonna stop piracy :D They hacked PS3 ,they can hack anything bring it on SONY!
watch your mouth. Sony will remove all secondary features because of that comment.
Please shut up.
THEY KNOW PEOPLE WILL STILL BUY IT
they always know, thats why crap like iPhone, etc is every generation more restrictive, people will buy whatever they may think its genius.
Sadly true :(
If I recall correctly, It wasn't always necessary to modify the battery itself to make it a hacking "Pandora" battery.
There are ways to soft mod it without having to tear the battery open at all. So this shouldn't affect pirates much.
As long as there are screws, there's a way.
didn't they do that w/ PS3 controllers? I remember a friend of my had one and complained how once the controllers batteries burned out he had to fork out money for a whole new controller
So, with Lithium Ion technology it could easily go out (decrease performance) in 1-2 years and be plug in only inside of 3-4...?
Then it's buy another device and if they don't support it anymore, you lose all your games, etc...?
IMO, the thieves aren't the pirates.
This measure will stop the hackers by...minutes...days at most. And it'll give them more street cred, offering their services.
so PSP2 is 'Playstation not-So Portable'
its not psp anymore they changed the name already :D
For a moment I thought it said "no battery charging".
That would actually be really funny if they did do that.
WE NEEDS WI-FI CHARGER
my old gamewatch/handheld used a pair oh AA batteries, and it's unhackable through batteries :D
Briliant idea - apply for a job in sony, they need such people.
