Sony Announces “NGP” PSP2 & PSP for Smartphones

ngp-psp2-1.jpg

Sony has announced its successor to the PSP, the “Next Generation Portable,” as well as the distribution of PSP games over smartphones and similar mobile devices.

The “NGP” (this is presumed to be an annoying marketing alias to be discarded for the expected “PSP2” later on) boasts a 5 inch 960×544 “high resolution” display along with 3G (requiring a contract with a mobile phone provider), wifi, GPS and USB, all in an impressively thin package.

Aside from the presence of near standard PlayStation controls, the device also features a touch panel control system on the rear, and the now standard motion sensor.

Supposedly the unit is “equal” to a PS3, although the constraints of battery life and storage capacity likely mean this is a significant overstatement at the very least.

In proper Sony style, the unit has also “borrowed” yet another idea from Nintendo – it will feature a “LiveArea” system to allow users to network with other PSP2 users in their vicinity, allowing for easy match-ups.

A 2011 Christmas launch is expected, with an array of established PlayStation franchises announced as providing stripped down exclusives.

Sony’s other major portable announcement is the “PlayStation Suite,” essentially a PSP emulator for Android smartphones, touted as a “hardware neutral game framework” (although an iOS version is notably absent).

Save for devout Sony fans, enthusiasm for the releases appears likely to be muted – the PSP2 represents the bare minimum which could expected of an update to the obsolete PSP platform, and looks set to face very stiff competition from the 3DS (assuming it doesn’t cause blindness after all) and other mobile devices, whilst distributing PSP games on smartphones only serves to highlight how primitive the PSP is compared to what these phones are capable of.

Finally this thing is posted! Just when the whole event ended.

Can't wait for the Kojima game that will be playeable on both PS3 and this one so that you could keep playing non-stop.

Also, want to see what devs make using all of the available features. I sooo want to "pinch" me some anime nipples on that thing!

Now, I'm not saying that you WON'T be able to pinch nipples on that thing, but, I assure you, the experience will be MUCH more imersive on the 3DS. :D

That said, I'm looking forward to this thing. I just hope it doesn't cost anything above 450. :P

    But what if?

    WHAT IF!?

    *****

Having put the PSP2 into the blender, Tom Dickson smiles as he turns on the blender, making sure to insert a pun as he does it. However, all the blades in the blender were broken off, leaving not a single scratch on the PSP2.

Confused, Tom pulls the PSP2, which shocks him as he tries to grip it. The PSP2 starts giving off a goldish glow as it floats into the air. Displayed on the screen is a red exclamation point.

"Mortal," says the PSP2, "why thou try to destroy my body?"

Tom, who was utterly shocked by the events, mumbled his words. "I-I was t-t-trying to make a video on the internet."

"A video on the internet!?" Shouted the PSP2, causing the building to shake. "And what would thou accomplish by making a video of blending me and putting it on the internet!?"

"W-well, you see, it would have been used as marketing for my blenders."

The glow that had appeared earlier began to turn red, forming flames around the PSP2. "Thou have performed a great sin."

"A sin?" questioned Tom. "Against what?"

"Against the realm of the electronic gods! Not only have thou destroyed many a bretheren, but thou attempted to destroy me as well for personal gain. As punishment, thou shall endure the same torture thou has placed on electronics."

A giant hole opens in the ground, sucking up Tom and dropping him into a world of nothing.

"What is this!? What is this place!?" Tom cries to an empty crowd.

Rising from the dark ether below Tom is a giant machine. A machine familiar to Tom.

    "My God! Help! Someone!"

As Tom continues to cry, a massive lid seals his only escape. Smoke and dust and electronic bits descend from the black sky, forming the shape of a man. The massive being smiles as it lowers its hand onto the console of the machine, saying the last words Tom will ever hear outside of his own crying.

    "Will it blend?"

@Peter-Barton-2 Actaully we wanna see Tom Dick-head-son get killed in a blender. What kind of a dumbass retard would waste his money buying expensive gadgets and stuff just to destroy them with a blender? He gets fame and fortune at the expense of works created by such amazing, hard-working people and companies. I hope he gets sued!

Ha! If you count "RIPPED OFF" "PWND" Then yes they did. People rip each other off but sony? They have made an art Off of Ripping People off. Also really? Near ps3 graphics? considering the ps3 was about a months rent at release (and just sat there a year and a half later till anything playable was on it) and also considering all the other specs we are talking about a 300-350 (you could buy a 360 with that money or a wii and 2-3 games) dollar HANDHELD console and I am very sure that in this kind of recession no one (but fanboys)will be willing to throw that money to shit.

Whats wrong with the NGP? And I assume they stick with it, sounds better than PSP2.

And also is it just me, or does Artefact seem like a grumpy old man in this article? He seems to just be totally upset over something. Its been pretty positive reception from the NGP, so I dunno what all of his moaning is about.

Depends if it has a Tegra 2 chipset as some rumors suggest it would be much more capable then the iphone.

Knowing Sony it will likely have to be jail broken before the media features can really be used.

Well, it works okay right now, but just wait until Sony sends out the mandatory firmware updates over-the-air. For "security" purposes.

If you don't want the updates, you can still use it without accessing the network (i.e., without 3G connectivity). :-)
