NGP/PSP2 Battery Life “Only 4 Hours”

ngp-psp2-2.jpg

Barely has the dust from Sony’s announcement settled and already it is being claimed the PSP2’s battery life is a mere 4-5 hours.

The (as yet still unofficial) “4-5 hour” figure, though far from impressive, is on par with if not slightly better than the officially announced 3DS battery life of “3-5 hours.”

Handheld gaming unfortunately seems to have entered into a new era in which trips to a power socket are almost as frequent as trips to save points.

New NGP/PSP2 news already? Well that was quick.

And another gaming device with a low battery-life? Still going to buy it. Can not wait to play PS3 games with it hopefully.

There most likely won't be any PS3 games on it as it doesn't have Blu-ray.

Let's hope Sony will make its PS3 games downloadable for NGP. Chances of it to happen are high IMO.

    Comment by Anonymous

If people actually think that the NGP can play PS3 games they are more deluded than I thought O_O PS3 games are 15 - 25 GBs on AVERAGE, sticking into a handheld would be insane, unless the NGP has a massive HDD.

And if they allow PS3 games to be downloadable, Sony might as well bend over and let teh 1337 pirates screw them in the ass O_O

PS3 games are made for an optimum resolution of 1920*1080. Texture assets make up the vast majority of that 20GB bluray space, along with high definition models.

The PSP2 runs at 960*544, a resolution around four times smaller than the PS3. The screen is also around 4-5 times smaller than the average HDTV. The assets on the PSP2 version of a PS3 game can quite happily be at least 4 times smaller, if not more. With compression techniques, that 20GB shrinks to 4GB in no time at all.

There is absolutely no reason why PS3 games can't be ported to the PSP2 on bandwidth requirements alone. The issue will be the ease at which the game renderer can be altered, and how much work would have to go into resizing the assets.

No. PS3 games aren't on average, 15 - 25GB. In fact, if you read digital foundary article on Eurogamer when it comes to majority of multiplatform games, the PS3 has around the same size or even smaller than their 360 counterpart.

Heck, even Infamous is merely over 6GB.

They may be designed for a maximum res of 1920*1080 but most games only have a native resolution of 10xx * xxx. The rest is all scaled so it's not like their using 20gig worth of space by holding 1920*1080 textures/

Games which don't use 1920*1080 are designed for 1280*720, and use nothing like 20Gb's worth of space for ingame assets. The space savings going down to 960*544 would be no different.

    @Artefact

lol, any reason to whinge eh? Resolution has to be appropriate to screen size and DPI, that's inescapable. At handheld dimensions, 960*544 is close optimum for OLED, so you're getting the best out of a handheld display that you gain in that respect.

Everything else - shader capability, lightning engine, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering is irrespective of resolution. 'Close to PS3' graphics is more than possible, with a degree of overall image blur due to the lower resolution, and some loss of texture crispness due to the smaller storage medium. With an OLED screen on board, graphical impact doesn't need to be lost due to that tho - all they need to do is vary colour more than apply fine detail to each surface texture, and the impact will come across very similar. Hard for monotone images - a black & white section of a game would look washed out for example, but everything else will be fine.

At the end of the day, PSP2 is as much of a serious gaming machine as the PSP1 was. Pure no gimmicks hardware with the best bang for buck available at the time for performance. Developers will have a field day with this kit.

the average person has a 20-25" HDTV? I really doubt that. Maybe you mean computer monitor lol. I'm pretty sure most people sit so far away from their tvs that at that size HD wouldn't even do anything.

Thats a load of bull. PS3 Games like xbox 360 games are made for far lower resolutions and scale the result up to 1080p. Those low spec Consoles can't push real 1080p with anything decent going on because they just lack the power...

If the NGP could play PS3 games, then Sony would've shot itself in the foot. They'd basically make the PS3 redundant. So it makes sense that even if the graphical power of the NGP DOES match the PS3, we won't be seeing full PS3 games on it.
That said, it'd be sweet if we did....

playing a ps3 game at full graphics? probably not,

HOWEVER, a scaled back version, as in lower texture quality, with reasonably good if not equal polly counts is possible.

all they would need to do is compress the shit out of the textures, beta test it, and add in better testures to where you REALY notice it allot.

and than again, a blu ray player can play a dvd, so who says a umdv2 like thing isn't also in there with a blu ray head, 1.8gb on what is essentially a dual layered dvd, would mean a 11+gb umd. i don't know if it has that player in it, and it wasn't mentioned before, but i cant imagine them going download only, or an sd card only, due to higher costing memory stick, less profits per game.

A scaled back version isn't a "PS3 game" any longer.

They are clearly boasting of "PS3 level" capabilities but it is not clear how much of this is the usual hardware-waving. The lack of storage in particular sounds like it could be an issue if these games really are intended to be PS3 equivalent.

Scaled back version will look exactly the same on a smaller screen. It's the same with video. psp1 scale video is looking the same on psp, as a HD video on large screen, but the size is 3 times smaller.

PS3 level isn't needed in portable games. Because we don't have 40 inch screen in our pocket. But we do have PS3 quality if we scale down games. They will look the same-thats why it's ps3 quality.
Also, there is no news as to how much flash storage NGP will have. And, I assume, that scaled down ps3 game will be about 5GB size. It's not that much.

Have you heard about game porting? Thats when developers edit game for another console: scaling up/down texture quality and port it to another platform interface, but leave content of the game untouched?

So basicly we have the same game, but you are right-it's won't be ps3 games-it will be NGP port. But it would have same graphic quality and same content. Thats what people want, anyway. Nobody wants full HD quality game on a palm size screen anyway.

And they are not boasting same technic parameters of NGP, compared to PS3. They said quality of graphic would be the same. And it looks damn good on screenshots on gigazine.

P.s. I hope, that nobody expected ps3 emulator on ngp... Thats just simply funny.

on a 5 inch screen, a 480p video and a 1080p video would look identical. same with games, so they can easily scale it down to keep it at a more reasonable size, which keeping all the quality.

Wanna know what the best part of this is? In the previous article it relinked the 3DS not being able to run the unreal engine. The chip they compared with in the "ipod" happens to also be the same chip they use in the IPad, AND Iphone4. Kinda puts that in a differant perspective on what that chip was actually meant for huh?

The CPU assuming four 1ghz ARMs should be about as powerful as a dualcore atom.
It would struggle to crank out 2 or 3GFLOPs.
But all four of those arm cores would use less power then a single atom core.
The GPU if based off four powerVR cores would be something along the lines of an old Geforce TI or 80 to 120 million polygons/sec.

The PS3 has a cell cpu with 100GLOPS and the RSX can do 330 to 450 million polygons/sec.

In short the NGP would be more comparable to the Wii then the PS3.
