Xbox 360 “Still Less Widely Owned Than Dreamcast”

A survey of Japanese console ownership reveals more Japanese own Dreamcasts than they do Xbox 360s, with less than 5% of gamers reporting owning one…
The online survey asked 1,073 Japanese to list the gaming devices they owned, and of the 60% who reported owning at least one, 62% owned a DS, 57% a PS2, 44% a Wii, 30% a PSP and 25% a PS3.
The numbers for which consoles respondents actually played as well as owned were slightly more reassuring for Microsoft – the Xbox 360 actually drew ahead of the original PlayStation with 3.3% playing it, versus 14.7% for the PS3, itself hardly an impressive number.
57% reported their gaming had “greatly” or “slightly” decreased in the last year – a distinctly disturbing trend for Japanese game developers stuck trying (and apparently failing) to meet their increasingly insular tastes in the face of ever mounting development costs for new consoles.

if it wasn't for region lock and other factors I'd get a 360 for monster hunter frontier
"Other factors", RRoD maybe?
i still have my dreamcast and it still kicks ass
I'm surprised yours hasn't kicked the bucket.
Mine can't even be salvaged for museum purposes...
i've had mine for 5years and except for it not liking shenmue all my other games it still plays fine heh.
"others" = PC ?
If your DC died, the really tiny fan on the side probably gave out. My friend had his fan die and thou the fan only pushes 5cfm, at best, without it, his DC would crash almost immediately.
Or depending on what controller you used, you could have blown the controller port fuse. There's a fix to prevent them from blowing, but the best way to avoid it is to not use cheap 3rd party controllers.
Only me surprised by the low PS3 numbers?
I still have a working Dreamcast. It's still reliable, unlike a certain US designed and China made console...
Sega systems are notorious for breaking. I have two broken geneses and a 32x--both broken. My contrast my NES & SNES are still running fine...
Objection! I have a model 2 Genesis that still works fine to this day. I agree that 32Xes are huge pieces of crap, tho.
@16:15
Your research included a grand total of 3 consoles vs ~35 millions of Genesis consoles and ~700 32x units sold since the day of release. That's the most accurate statistical data I've ever encountered.
You deserve a prize.
I have a Master System, got it when I was 3 years old, it still works great.
Others = Wonderswan Color & Sega CD.
I have about five Dreamcasts - they keep dying.
Unfortunately, SEGA don't repair them for free.
I'm not surprised that the Xbox 360 is less widely owned then the Dreamcast, the Dreatcast is a hell of a console & I'm shocked by how low the numbers are for that system...
I wish my sister would have kept hers instead of selling it to pay for a GameCube, sooooo cheap...
i still have my dreamcast and it still kicks ass!!!
I have my Dreamcast also and its still a great system!!! Phantasy Star Online and Shenmue!! Too bad SEGA never got thier act together with it.
I still have mine, and thoroughly enjoy playing "House of the Dead II" on it as well as the Dreamcast version of "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" (for the sake of fighting an extra boss)...
It was hard work getting a Dreamcast back when I was in Grade School...I will never part with this gem...
Azure Xuchilbara

Not to mention Power Stone 1&2.
my dreamcast still good to play a few hours of Sakura Taisen using the oh-so-awesome GD-ROM
i like dreamcast, back then it was a revolutionary console, too bad it sinking down really fast
Symphony of the night for dreamcast................that is a good one.
You are usign Bleem right? otherwise you are a big louzy lier.
I don't think it's only cause of the RRoD, it doesn't happen that much and microsoft give automatical to that 3 yrs warranty.
I think the most games (for the fans in jap) are for the sony and wii for them + they get maybe some more fan service on these consoles (like extra dlc for specific consoles e.g. ac:brotherhood for ps3). Not that I'm against of it, but normally it's for me a reason to buy a game for a console.
additionally I would buy a console, determining of the amount of my friends have it. So it's maybe no wonder for them.
There are a lot of reasons why I let my 360 die and didn't bother to get another one.
The region lock was one of the biggest. I hated the region lock. Having an Asian 360 meant that I was stuck playing a number of games entirely in Japanese (eventhough I'm nowhere near Japan), like the Musou series, with no possible alternative beyond buying a new 360.
Also, there are a lot of other things that can do wrong with the 360, it's just that RROD got the most publicized. But, getting less publicity doesn't mean that those console breaking problems are any less frequent. And since they weren't publicized, the extended warranty does NOT cover those.
My 360 was plagued not only with RROD, but with black static screens too. I stuck with it, sending it in for repairs while it was under warranty. But one day it finally died to a screen saying 'E74'. An online search turned up a LIST of 'E##' error numbers in the dozens, all of which can break the 360.
Seeing as my 360 was just over 2 years old then, this problem wasn't covered by the now expired standard warranty, and I decided it wasn't worth the trouble.
The 360's hardware is crap. Releasing the 360 slim now after many years of users struggling with crap hardware is too little, too late. The improved chipsets don't count because users still suffered meltdowns even with the new chipsets.
The only reason the 360 Slim hasn't suffered from the same degree of widespread RROD meltdowns is because Microshit REMOVED THE RED LIGHTS and installed a system that would forcibly turn off your 360 while in the middle of a game if it gets too hot. They didn't fix the cause of the meltdowns, they just went around it.
Getting a 360 was the biggest gaming-related mistake of my life. Halo was fun, but the console only lasted through 2 Halo games. Dead Rising is now multi-plat. And Gears of War, while decent, get's old quickly if you don't have friends to go multiplayer with (same goes for Halo).
E74 is usually caused by the solder connection mounting ANA/HANA breaks. [It's a heat issue caused by air passing over the chip.] The proper fix is similar to fixing a RRoD error. But usually it can be 'fixed' by simply weighing it down or mounting a heatsink to the chip.
Buying an Asian 360 and expecting to play anything on it was really dumb. Seriously.
And as someone who does not own a slim, it'd be best to not talk about something you do not understand. Slims are designed to display a message and shut down if they overheat, preventing RRoD. And unless you're some idiot with their system on the carpet, placed in a tight spaced cabinet or you game in a sauna, chances of a Slim overheating are slim.
Not that it really matters, as all current gen consoles are prone to failure. Some are just less publicized than others.
"it doesn't happen that much"
Relatively to other consumer products, yes it does.
now where's that sankaku article that tells us the %s of console breakdowns...?
Never seen the failure rates on major brand desktops & notebooks, huh? Google Acer failure rates. I think you're in for a rude awaking.
More like 50 bucks a year. New 360s stopped RRODing after September 09, when MS introduced the Jasper board revision.
Thats a load of horseshit
No it ain´t
ie. they took the red LEDs out
What a great statistic.
If you show from every device the model, then why do you merge them for the DS model? Doesn't make much sense -.-"
@Xbox360LessOwnedThanTheDC must hurts. :&
Because the different DS models play the same games.
okay thanks
If it wasn't for all those useless censor and other factors, I'd get more games for my 360
If it wasn't for the region locking, I'd get a 360...
The 360 can be unlocked easy enough but it needs to be a mod that can be turned off or microshaft will ban the console from XBL.
Really though region locks are a very stupid idea and the person who came up with it should have been dragged into the street and shot.
Still their biggest problem is they do need better Q&A.
Not sure why MS wasn't able to get it right on the 360 as from my experience the Xbox original's where probably the best built six generation console by a good margin.
Maybe Microsoft needs to go back to assembling consoles in Mexico and hire someone good at thermo design.
The Chinese are really notorious
for cutting corners such as using a cheaper solder that ends up being incompatible with the BGAs on the chips.
Yes Foxconn actually did this to Apple on the first nVidia mac books.
The 360 really needs a better heat pipe design.
At present, the only way around region checking is to patch the disc contents, breaking the signature. Doing so will allow games from any region to work on any given system, but the catch is that unsigned code only works on a JTAG exploited system.
There is no method of making the system itself regionfree. You can change the KeyVault to that of a different region, but that's about it. No one has yet to edit a custom KeyVault file that'll enable all regions. [Which honestly is really disappointing, as it should be the easiest edit to the KeyVault file, ever.]
Oh, and fuck lead free solder & China too.
Just FYI, the 360 isn't region locked. The games can be, just like the PS3, but the system itself isn't.
Because Dreamcasts was so easy to Pirate games....
...all consoles are.
Even PS3?
Just want to know..
lol yes.
first console to be as easy as the dreamcast. And none of that firmware stuff that's been happening across this entire generation.
the PS3 is open wide now. Like a woman who's done DVDA
At least DC didn't even require a mod chip. That was priceless.
How did they ever bankrupt?
much reason, Sega:
*) had much lost because of their last console.
*) lost their biggest sport pub. EA, which went to the new resulted company sony entertainment.
*) thanks to main quartre in japan, they lost 2 next generation version of consoles
*) If I remember right, the API for 3rd Party Pub. were miserable.
*) not much money left, because they lost much because of their handheld too (.. the "simple" gameboy got most consumer)
and some other reasons
their strategy to build at first a "great" hardware console and then good games, was great but not that profitable. :/
Well nor Wii or Ps3 require either.
Only the earlier Dreamcasts did not. Ones produced near the end of the system's life cycle required a modchip to play backups.
@kumu no, has nothing to do with that.
btw: microsoft was the company, which wrote the os for the dreamcast.
The Dreamcast also was very easy to make homebrew for and a lot of emulators where quickly produced for it.
It really was not a bad console by any means.
It just a victim of bad marketing and was crushed by the PS2 hype machine.
Sega probably should have pitched the online gaming aspect more and offed a hard drive as this was the Xbox's big selling point less then 2 years later.
And the PS3 is still less widely owned than Playstation (1).
So what?
but more than the dreamcast - that's the point.
You want to cry taiga?
Yes, go ahead and cry so I can lick your delicious tears.
...and only the ps2 could beat the wii...
i had no idea weewee was so popular O_o
it's not cause of the price, it's more that DC doesn't exists anymore today as "offical" console.
I still playing the original PS1 and the XBOX too.
