Akihabara’s “pedestrian paradise” is back – the roads are closed to all but foot traffic on Sundays once again, and many thousands of shoppers packed the area in celebration.
2 years and 7 months ago the practice was cancelled on the rather dubious basis that the mass stabbing perpetrated by a crazed otaku could happen again (although the same logic would suggest banning any public space not dominated by cars).
A variety of eccentric and even erotic street performances were also aggravating police at the time, and with police being dependent on brothels and pachinko parlours for their income, naturally they had no-one else to crack down on but the throngs.
A network of surveillance cameras has now been put in place to keep cosplayers and mass murderers firmly under control, sufficiently reducing the perceived risk for the event to finally be reinstated.
All that remains is the return of a certain Akihabara exhibitionist…

Very tolerant to westerners. By far, it was my favorite part of Tokyo. The people of Tokyo are very used to seeing foreigners running around.
Oh! I do like a good filthy crowd. Will there be any student rioting or something? Because in Europe it was really exciting. ^_^

I've been there twice and loved it both times. The store owners know that westerners are there to shop, so they love having you in their stores. I found a small shirt store on the top floor of a building. When the owner found out I was an anime fan, he went in the back and put my shirt in a nice Eva shopping bag instead of the brown bags he was using for other customers.
My highest recommendation is to wear comfortable shoes and EXPLORE. There are some great tiny shops that are not on the the big store map.
On the side, I wonder how the recent manga ban is going to affect this place.

They don't care about Westerners coming to the country they are more worried about them doing something wrong in the country.

There are just too many incredible places to go each one with severals floors. And it's worth enough visit the same building twice to compare prices. At the end of the day you realize you just walked a marathon ^^'

AKihabara was my favorite place to visit so many shops so many people and random people giving you free tissues everywhere ^^

2 years ago there was a mass stabbing in akiba people were killed they stopped the open roads on sunday this is the re-opening of such event with extra surveillance to hopefully secure the streets from a possible second strike!.
