Otaku archaeologists have unearthed TV reports of an ancient ritual gathering held in 1985, known as “Comic Market 28” and theorised to be the precursor to the modern Comiket:
The primitive culture of the time apparently had no qualms about displaying shameful illustrations of the female form even on TV news – little wonder their society collapsed.

wow... Japanese women back in '85 looked a bit more... Asian and brown-skinned.
I think they still do. It's just that they get less airtime nowadays.
more like a lot of them these days apply whitening lotion from head to toe and dye their hair to look more American/Western.
Well, Asians do have a history of preferring fair skin. And now they have the technology to create it.
Jap girls back then are ugly and they have the technology now to improve their looks especially with boobs and teeth.
sorta makes you wonder how many of them had illegitimate children with marines stationed there.
Wow. Comicket exist before I exist.
Japan goverment should support this kind of event.
It's already like a culture/ritual in Japan.
Normal looking Japanese everywhere...
Wow, this is a good find.
Also, thanks for posting about this, Artefact. Sometimes serious and interesting things like this are good too.
I wasn't even born yet, but damn, it looks nostalgic
That guy in the beret is Osamu Tezuka! Fantastic find!
It would only be two years after the time that video was made before he died :(
Indeed! I thought "Is it really ...?" and then I saw that the kanji began with a 手/te. :)
yeah!! totally @_@
He's awesome :D
LOL
Do we have any clips from Comiket 1?
Hahaha, do we even know if there really was a comiket 1?
or cameras were still black&white then
Like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgUXSAIAROU&feature=related]?
That is so awesomely epic, I don't even...
That Godzilla looked EXCELLENT
An ancient civilization that it is. What was the most popular anime and manga on those times again? Seriously, I want to know... I don't keep track of date origins of famous series.
I saw a lot of "urusei yatsura" cosplay, and things. so maybe that?
Hello The Kiss, I figured I would list what I recognized.
Dirty Pair @ 1:40
Tiger Mask @ 0:29
Genmu Senki Leda @ 1:52
I also saw plenty of Kamen Rider villains, a few samurai and assorted pop idols. Hopefully someone will come along and expand this list. Also this news story seems to be more about fan-made comics that cosplay, so there you go. Hope that helped.
Urusei Yatsura, SDF Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam were big. There were fair few Lynn Minmay cosplays (Macross) there in addition to Lum
Of course Lum was the queen of 80s anime, like Rei was in 90s
Rei still dominates, I believe.
They're were a bunch of people who were influenced by Space Battleship Yamato for some reason. Plus I like those Guin Saga girls.
Aw yes, cheesy 80's tunes~
Ah 85, the year I was born. Brings up a question what the fuck an elder fossil like me still doing on this site?
Handsome on the outside, creepy on the inside.
1984...
My first anime was Nausicaa...
The "Warriors of the Wind" cut.
HE IS A CHAR!
'89 here
Char's counterattack :3
85' represent! D:
umm not unless you were born in 1891..
1985? o_0 *snort!*
I was 11 years old, and completely (and happily) ignorant that Japanese had such things as anime and figurines.
Now? I curse the luck which had me born on the wrong side of this huge-ass rock. >_<
I'm another 1985er here. I watch this and can't believe the similarity to today's conventions. We sure have a lot more color and more people cosplaying though.
You think we just have more content to cosplay now? Is it bad that I knew most of the costumes?
Oh my god, did you see that mini TV that guy had? It was the size of a boom box but probably cost a fortune.
1992 here^^ birn in the year when the UDSSR crumbled down
'91 here. I'm probably in the minority.
I'm worse 79 here.
88'
1987 here. We're only 2 years apart so small difference.
'81. 1981, that is.
1985 also. :3
dont worry, I born in 1975
at least they were more open about it, no Ishihara's or other politic dumbfucks, of course when Ishihara was a teen he enjoyed all the 80s hentai but when he grew old he decided to take it all away. he's probably jealous that our time manga's are so better looking that 80s shit
Ishihara would've been in his 50's when hentai anime fist came out. He'd probably never like it. Which is his lost anyway.
I love how low res real life looks.
@Neonie,same here
is it just me, or was their skin tone way different than nowadays? while todays japanese seem to look either pale or darktoned like peopel that were in the sun or on the beach a lot, the 80's really do seem to be yellow.. could be the quality of 80's cameras though
@Neonie Same here as well...Guess these days everything has better resolution then the reality...
"when Ishihara was a teen he enjoyed all the 80s hentai"
Yes, the 1880s hentai...
"Yes, the 1880s TENTACLE hentai..."
Fixed:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tentacle_erotica
(This was made in 1814, by the way.)
tentacle hentai is not only part of Japan's many fetishes but also it's history?
Ishihara is eliminating history! that bastard!
Haha i saw my dad
LOLZ History is just as idiotic as the people who makes it.... Ergo: Our ancestors are idiotic
Wow, the media response were much more positive and enthusiastic back then before there were moralfag infestation as seen today.
This was in the baby boomer stage. Now that every guy jerks off to anime while girls decide not to get married, have kids and many other factors related to otaku-ism, things change.
Well, otaku hadn't been murdering little girls just yet at that stage.
actually, there was ONE major case that destroyed otakus image: a murderer who was an otaku. truth to be told, he was a closet otaku, but he was NOT an aniem otaku; he was a PORN otaku. (and im not just speakign about hentai, i mean real porn. av and such)
but because of that, "otaku" had got a very negative ring to it... which, while that particular case was gettign forgotten the negative ring to it stayed...
the 80s and 90s was the shits man best decades ever!!!!!
The music we have today is hardly an improvement.
I LOVE the bright eyed innocence people tended to have in the 80's. Especially towards the burgeoning and very optimistic future for the manga/anime culture instead of doomsayers constantly calling the industry as being near its end.
