Shin Megami Tensei Devil Hunter ZERO Released

The latest addition to the hit Megami Tensei series, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Hunter ZERO, has been revealed. The good news is that it is an RPG, but as for the bad news…

shin-megami-tensei-devil-hunter-zero-2.png

Index, the company which recently dissolved Atlus, has announced the game will shortly be exclusively available on one of Japan’s top social networking/gaming sites, GREE.

Devil Hunter Zero joins Persona 3 Social as the latest SNS outing for the franchise, which has still yet to appear on a modern console.

Curiously, long-time fans of the series are less than enthusiastic about this new direction for the franchise.

The worst case scenario looks increasingly likely – Catherine fails to sell because it is not an RPG, Index declares game development on consoles to be too risky, and what remains of Atlus is subsequently consigned to making awful mobile phone games until the Megami Tensei franchise’s popularity is spent, at which point the Atlus “brand” is dissolved into Index’s mobile game division.

Indeed. First Catherine and now this? What the hell.
    Index is doing it wrong.

no offense, but both of you comments makes absolutely no sense to me
First poster: I have absolutely no idea what you're trying to say
Second poster: Index has absolutely nothing to do with Catherine, and Catherine is, in its own rights, a fairly good game

I didn't say Catherine was bad. I'm talking about people's expectations about the game. I didn't play it yet but we all know that lot of people didnt like it because it wasn't a RPG.

I'm trying to say their decision to move SMT game to social networking / gaming site is suck. first Persona 3, now this, heck maybe all the future game from Atlus will be. and this trend happened since Index comes in :-(

Catherine is the only thing about Atlus right now that actually looks promising, since it looks like an interesting game in its own right and confirms they're finally developing for current generation consoles.

Persona 5 will almost certainly use the same game engine as Catherine, so if people are really that upset about it not being an RPG, they can just consider it part of the development process for the former game.

Watch Persona 5 be a cellphone game with no animation. lol

    Seppuku time for SMT fans?....

I also don't like how they're adding that random "Zero" naming just to confuse gamers more about the versions. With cellphone/social-network/handheld/consoles/PC versions, it's only going to get crazy convoluted as if it wasn't already. Look at Kingdom Hearts series now.

The fans will find a way to live on.

Index will be the one to lose business and have to commit seppuku after the top leadership of Atlus grow some balls and leave to form a new company.

Index Holdings are just trying to make a quick buck, they don't care how much they desecrate Atlus's corpse.

From PS2 to portable consoles to cellphones, the series seems to be going backwards. At this rate Persona 5 will be pen-and-paper, and Persona 6 will be on stone tablets.

Actually its a pretty smart move from Index really. It's becoming a well known fact that social networking games and mobile phone games pretty much print money since they are cheap to make and are pretty much instantly profitable. This way they are cashing in on an established franchise with a fantastic install base as well as possibly introducing new customers to a previously inaccessible series.

As for those who are whining about Persona; Megaten fans have been up on this shit since before you guys liked that series. Persona 3 is considered a slap in the face to older more "hardcore fans" because of its simplicity and change of theme as well as it being a sign of Atlus "selling out".

People want a grand entry of Persona onto a next gen console. That's it. Catherine seems like a nice game, but at the same time it's not what people wanted. Here's hoping they quickly catch a clue and just do the game already

Index is doing like other developpeurs. There are more mobile phones than consoles, so if the park is bigger; more clients. Even Capcom, Sega and Konami understood that. Plus you need less effectives to program in a mobile.

It's all about the money in the end, not the fans. They don't care about the fans...

SMT imagine ("Online" outside of japan) was pretty fun with all the events and people if you played on the japanese servers back before they blocked outside ip's.

The Aeria version was beyond miserable and lazy as hell with their stupid "lets play hide and seek" bs "events" and 4++ years behind the Japanese version.

Really doesn't affect us much, think that fiasco showed any online game would be murdered outside of japan, and the only thing this "could be" would be a networking gimmick or DS game.

Now that I think about it, the only thing they did wrong with the Matrix was the black screen with the green binary codes.

If it would've been a blue logo w/ and F on it and tons of newsfeeds scrolling on the background it would've been factually accurate ¬¬

Even few months after the news of Atlus 'death' came out, I still hope Persona Franchise will replace FF, but nooo.

Well last SMT was Nocturne that received the rehash of Nocturne Maniacs, everything else has been a spin off that just uses the "SMT" part of the name, Strange Journe was a far outcry of what was the SMT quality of the games.

This is just wishful thinking on Sankaku's part. Seriously, every news about Atlus on this site has been "new Atlus game is shit, Atlus is dead" lately.
Meanwhile, Persona 2: Innocent Sin is coming on the PSP and (hopefully) Eternal Punishment will follow soon.

On the other hand...at least this'll likely put a definitive end to the list of SMT US releases, so after I get Jack Bros and the next half-a-game they throw at me (and P3 Potable) I can truthfully say I have every US SMT release...

I think I preferred the unending collection, SMT Gotta Catch 'EM All...

Gree is actually a really good system with a lot of pretty cool games and the like. I'm really excited to be able to play Shin Megami Tensei even at work now!

They'll give us Persona 5, but in the meantime, I see nothing wrong with them making some extra revenue on the side.

    Shin Megami Tensei: Persona

    Holly ballsacks of zeus.

Microsoft going full scale on Lolkinect games, square falling apart, namco ignoring the west market and now this...I just looked ps3,360,wii localized JRPG list and i see less than 5~8 thats actually decent.

Altrough i have to admit the DS was simply spetacular(remembered me the 32-16 bit golden era) with alot of diverse games and even the psp had his shinny moments.I already can see the day when all the gaming industries will move to the portable.

So much cheaper and easy to handle not mentioning its popularity.
Lets admit it,how much a ps4 will cost? 800 700 dollar?maybe even 1000?Games would certainly be over 100+.And then they expect to sell.I would never pay that much for a console...i would rather buy a well good PC or even a motocycle here

Everyone predicted Nintendo's Wii would fail because people like you cannot accept that you are not the sole demographic. And in case you hadn't noticed, otaku-oriented game developers are the ones with the biggest financial problems.
