A 12-year-old boy diagnosed with “gender identity disorder” is to become Japan’s youngest ever recipient of hormonal gender therapy.
The Hyogo prefecture boy is in his 6th year of elementary school, and already lives as a girl.
The hospital reports treatment will take the form of hormonal injections of “GnRH agonists” in an effort to obstruct the progress of the boy’s natural puberty. A program of monthly injections costs ¥35,000 as they are not covered by national health insurance.
Rather than attempting to change a child’s physical characteristics to conform to those of a particular sex as with traditional hormone replacement therapy, treatment with GnRH agonists aims to suppress puberty until a later date (generally the age of 16), at which time HRT can be begun with a view to eventual surgical alterations.
However, this program does not completely eliminate the changes associated with puberty, and may otherwise permanently alter a child’s development.
At 12, he will be Japan’s youngest ever recipient of such treatment.
The diagnosis and subsequent “treatment” of pubescent or pre-pubescent children as having a “gender-identity disorder” itself is extremely controversial.
Even amongst supporters of GID as a valid disorder, opinions range from it being a highly desirable measure due to the more complete transformation it allows, to those who criticise it as being ethically dubious or even an outright act of sexism or intolerance against more fluid or non-traditional gender roles.
Particular criticism has focused on the ability of parents and psychiatrists to engineer a diagnosis of a child as having GID even if the child has never expressed any interest in changing gender, potentially grooming them for irreversible social and sexual “gender reassignment” without them ever being in a position to give informed consent.
Japanese children have recently become subject to a surge of GID diagnoses, at ever younger ages – with boys as young as 8 being told they are actually girls, scepticism about the validity of the diagnoses and the ethics of the treatment is inevitable and probably far from misplaced.

A 12-year-old boy diagnosed with “gender identity disorder”

"Boys Will Be Boys" Oh Or Rather Girls XD
We are so misunderstood. Haizzz...
Japan diagnoses phimosis and other randoms like this as often as doctors in America diagnose ADD, ADHD, OCD, and bipolar disorder.
All the same, I'm still curious as to what this boy looks like.
@Unsung: No imbecile that's a real disorder. Fucker.
@14:17 I think he knows it's a real disorder, but was rather saying that it was a false diagnosis in this specific case in which case I am inclined to agree with Unsung..."They Need More Proof"...
Why don't call it trap disorder~?
That kid ain't no trap no moar.
Hello GID Boy, let me look into my crystal orb and read your future....
Hmmm...... ah.... i see...... i see.. great amout.. great amout of... anal.
To be honest, the requirements to set the diagnosis are rather high. There are also several levels of the disorder, where only the worst cases are to have corrective surgery.
GID has nothing to do with gender roles, but is only about whether a person is able to see their physical sex as their real sex. (Gender is usually defined as the psychological part, while sex is the physical part.) Having Gender and Sex be incongruent is a constant strain on your mental health. A person with GID wishes to feel natural and at ease with their body, often knowing that there will be hardships due to gender roles. Not to say anything about the procedure itself.
Yes, I'm personally close to getting some treatment for GID. Genderwise I'm neither and both.
The youngest I know to get the full procedure started at ... ten years old. She is now a photomodel...
This is exactly why my lecturers in my psychology degree put a lot of emphasis on the fact that diagnosing children is still very ill-defined.
A lot of symptoms that we're told to look for in the DSM-IV (Diagnosis and Statistical Manual 4th Ed.) are very very... not to say vague, but can easily be normal growing behavior mis-identified as a symptom of a psychological disorder.
A lot of psychologists tend to be a little gung-ho and trigger-happy with their diagnostic process, and since the diagnosis for things like ADHD and GID in children involve a lot of behaviors that could be normal growing behaviors of a young person who is curious about the world and himself, it's easy for these kinds of psychologists to come to such a diagnosis. Sometimes even impressing onto the patient that he or she may have a symptom when he or she actually doesn't.
My lecturers drove the point into us, multiple times, that we have to be careful and be aware of ourselves so that we can avoid doing something like this ourselves.
So yeah it's questionable whether a kid who is mostly sex neutral at that point, be actually transsexual and not just transvestite, which isn't the same thing. And of course it could be, you know, just phase.
How ever given that egg-egg reproduction is now possible, I'd suggest that parents take preventive measures and simply screen their embryos for Y chromosomes, so that they can make sure to have proper girl since the beginning.
Of course in a country with only females there is the unfortunate possibility that some, hopefully most will turn to other girls for affection. But I think the risk is worthy for this experiment.
Not the least bit surprised about this happening in japan, or the age involved. What has surprised me though, is that this seems to be becoming a very popular way for psychiatrists and doctors to give people even -more- drugs, and do even -more- surgeries.
A plot is surely afoot.
Blame the parents first for trusting and allowing such bullshit.
@ Jack
the parents are idiots by default for even suggesting this "treatment" for their son
for all we know it could be a "phase" that the boy is going through and yet they opted to go through all this trouble to "cure" him
such fail logic on their part IMO
WOW are you off base usely the kid has to beg and plead to get treatment
in the US any most parents dont want to let there kid do this
This is in Japan, if you haven't noticed already.
Yea Its Japan, Silly Anon =P
This is actually the responsible approach. The point of these medications is it is the least harmful way to deal with the situation. It delays puberty until the child is better capable to deal with the decision. This is important because puberty, and the hormone increases it causes, cause far more long term changes then the inhibitors.
Should the long term decision be to end treatment and have him go though normal male puberty he might end up a bit smaller than he would have otherwise.
Yeah, I don't understand what his parents could have been thinking doing something like this at only 12 years old, but it's Japan, some of their people are like that sometimes, whatever...
So much for parenting.
Maybe Parents Think School Will Teach Them All There Life Values, So Parents Dont Really Care?
When have we ever heard of proper parenting in this site? >_>
Oh! Touche!
Hey its legitimate to have boys/girls that think themselves as girls/boys. Look at Europe.
Quality truth post being downrated by eurofags. What a shame.
Thinking is still not illegal in most of the world, although I imagine only because proving thought crimes is too much work.
How would his life be from then on? I have not heard that many news about transexual children. Does he still hit puberty and whatnot, or do they have to hope that he's Justin Bieber?
He would be a girl from then on. He would still hit puberty as a guy and be surgically modified to fit his perceived gender.
And no, we don't need another Justin Bieber. No way.
Well, I just hope that he- I mean she - does not grow too much facial hair and won't be having raging hormones later on in life.
she's gonna be on hormonal treatmest all her life, so no way.
i still haven't figured out how hormones and turning your dick inside out makes you a girl.
We haven't figured out how your brain works, but that doesn't stop you from making dick comments.
The inhibitors prevent puberty. When the child reaches an age that they specify they will determine if they should or should not proceed with hormone treatment. If they decide not to they stop having them take the inhibitors, and the kid goes through regular puberty. They might have some stunted growth but that is it. Should they decide treatment needs to continue the kid will go on a hormone replacement regime and go through puberty of the other gender. After a few years surgery becomes an option.
A Gonadotrophic releasing hormone agonist is not an inhibitor. Please don't assume anything if you don't know what it means.
And it doesn't prevent puberty. It simply delays its onset.
So long as there is somebody who is different from the pack, it'll always be a disorder. Or "genetic".
Doesn't apply for Ishihara.
He's a natural (ass).
This just in! Ishihara suggests ban on all "Deviant" behavior!
@ Ohnoes!
different from the pack? so much for Individuality.....
It is classified as a disorder in the DSM IV specifically if it causes distress to the individual(body dysphoria etc). A person who undergoes and completes treatment no longer has GID, because it is not a description of the situation but an identifier as to the source of distress.
Great job showing your ignorance, Unsung van Winkle. There's a HUGE difference between the hobby of cross dressing and somebody who was born as one sex but identifies with the other gender. You think this kid's parents would be going through all of this if he just liked wearing a dress every now and then?
I think the child is too young to know what he's going to want for the rest of his life. The parents are wrong.
I was having feelings that I wasn't born the right gender as young as five years old. Had I had people around me that could have better explained the feelings I was having, I see no reason I couldn't have been certain of my situation at a very young age.
Obviously, some children are still too young to fully understand what's going on with them, but others are perfectly capable of being certain. The only reason I didn't fully know who I was at a younger age was that I didn't understand the whole "transgender" thing, and thus thought maybe my thoughts and feelings meant I was gay - which was one thing I was sure I wasn't.
Thats just it though, Unless you are past puberty, or adult, you are at the complete mercy of your parents. if they DO tell you you have this disorder you, you can't really say much of anything. Since They came to the conclusion you aren't going to have much say in the matter from that point on.
Even if the child understands, imagine the potential for disaster when adolescence hits and they change their mind.
That is the point of this course of treatment. You intervene on the child's behalf until they are old enough to make a final decision. it has little long term effect on them if they decide no treatment is needed. They end up having a slightly delayed puberty and maybe end up a bit shorter/smaller.
That is why they wait till the child is 16. The only reason to do so is to be more certain.
i agree with you, is the huge diference
people with GID not choice this way for find the real happiness, the way is hard and a lot of descrimination
so true
Japan just like to make us fall in their trap!!
now that i think, what if s/he gets paid for sex with an old guy then realizes he is a trap but at the same time not a trap?
Yeah, gender theory is suggesting we should wonder if being trans is even a disorder as much as being gay is.
Its a tra- Kinoshita Hideyoshi.
