Control a Robot with Kinect

kinect-robot.jpg

The potential of Kinect continues to expand – this time robotics hobbyists have developed a system for controlling an actual robot body using Kinect.

The results are extremely impressive to say the least:

The robot used is a hobbyist robot kit dressed to look somewhat like a Gundam mech – an actual robotic Gundam toy/model cannot be too far off.

The software used, V-Sido, resides here. Particularly impressive is the fact that the robot independently maintains its balance rather than falling over in certain postures…

the problem with it now is that to make it true robot wars (robots against humans) the robots would have to be given a "learning" AI, and that's next to improbable as far as today's society goes hehehe

Models no - not to far off, except hobbyists will have to figure out how to miniturize the gyros neccessary to stabilize a stand alone model "mecha".

As was discussed in the forum (we got a thread where this was debated to death),... The only two things inhibiting the building of a full scale mech is the artificial muscles and a reliable power source.

Even a more reasonable sized exoskeleton like a landmate (Shirow Sensei) would be difficult to built without an umbilical to power the systems.

It would be very cool to have actual robot battles, it would be the next generation of battle bots.

    ^_^

Adding to the things which inhibits building a full scale mecha:

    - GROUND PRESSURE. Especially if you're thinking humanoid Gundam-like mecha, and plan to use them in terrestrial environment. Mother earth will be your biggest enemy because legs can't spread weight well enough, and the concentrated weight will cause it to sink into the ground. You're welcome to argue about using larger footpads, but that'll put a strain on your power source, hydraulics / whatever your actuator system is. Other solution includes paving every soft grounds on earth with concrete... but that isn't so practical, is it?

    - INEFFECTIVE ARMORING. So, you're imagining about using them in combat? Good luck trying to armor the mech effectively while considering the restraints of physical laws such as weight and, once again, ground pressure. Don't forget also that mech may be sticking out like sore thumb for everyone to see (and shoot). Being a (roughly) 7 meter tall entity, there won't be much place to hide.

First, they start to move via Kinect.

Next, they'll battle on small-scale, being moved via Kinect.

Then finally, on a larger scale. Yess... The future seems to filled with awesome.

Taking pictures of something several times a second, transferring it to a computer, and replaying it, is a webcam.

Kinect actually has to identify and track points on a person's body, which requires far more sophisticated software.

It may not be new, several CG movies for instance use similar technology, but it's certainly innovative, and I can't think of another consumer product that utilizes it.

the important bit of technology on kinect is the depth sensor, and it's the most affordable, decent quality one available.

While I don't want to use Kinect for video games, stuff like this does make me consider buying it. Kinect clearly has a lot more potential than microsoft intends to use it for.

Also, that hands in these videos looks pretty feminine. It would be really hot if a girl was doing all of this.
