Winter 2011 Revisited – Now With Even Less Originality

Anime fans aren’t done with 2011’s winter season – the previously featured diagram alleging all the anime are but staid rehashes of overused element has been expanded to cover even more anime featuring an overbearing heroine browbeating a wishy-washy protagonist against the tedious backdrop of a Japanese school…
The diagram now covers Gosick, Infinite Stratos, Freezing, Yumekui Merry, Kore wa Zombie?, Dragon Crisis, Madoka and “Ochinko” (Oniichan no Koto) – as before, the three elements are a harsh heroine, useless male protagonist, and school setting.
Anime producers can probably be forgiven the succession of egomaniacal female leads, but the inability to construct meaningful male protagonists and the perpetual reliance on a school setting speaks either of creative enervation on their part or a fanbase completely obsessed with weakling schoolboys at the mercy of crazed schoolgirls…

Yes, but they also put out Level E to see if it will be sucessful to test us. We should support it. Someone tell 2ch people to buy Level E.
Seconded.
Hell, let's see this chart again, this time with EVERY show from this season. Fractale? Wandering Son? Level E? Beelzebub? Fuck, even Wolverine?
Level E is a good manga... i forgot where i left off.

I still don't understand, what's so bad about it? As long as it's entertaining, isn't that what Anime is all about?
There can be too much of a good thing
Basically all in moderation most people are over saturated from the last three seasons in these type of settings so people want some variety
Apparently people no longer look at character development in anime these days.
They do which is where we get to the problem here, they are judging the characters too soon, I haven't even judged the heroine in Gosick yet as it is too soon to say anything about her characters or any other anime character really...
Of course there are the other things they are complaining about like the setting & what not, but it is basically the same imo...
I like all of mentioned Anime, apart from Stratos with I somehow missed.. that will be fixed soon. No idea why that rage. Its really hard to come up with something that wasn't done before, since there was gazyllion of anime series made already. Those series aren't that bad, I saw many worse (like the one with russian boy reenergazing by drinkin milk out straight from huge boobs).
The concept of people watching anime because of artistic value, commentary, a well-told story or anything that defines quality of any fictional work in every other form of media has apparently been lost.
Anime is dead and you people are fucking stupid for joyfully guzzling the shit these people are dumping on you. It's not like it's your fault though, since you were probably never had the capacity to enjoy or even spot something created with integrity to begin with. Fuck you people for making anime a genre instead of a style. Fuck you people for watching anime "because it's anime". Fuck you people for everything.
oh, shut up, anon. let victorique bask in the sunlight for a bit. don't like it, don't watch it, don't give a shit for anyone who likes it, is that your creed? i'm pretty sure some of the "anime" you've seen isn't altogether that creative or that worked-hard on either. and in case you haven't noticed anime is not going to be called anything other than "anime" no matter if it's good, bad, craptastic or spectacular. go watch some pico, why don't you.
its insulting to our intelligence, thats whats bad about it. they think we'll just drink up the same old crap without even a single unsatisfied peep. kudos to you, artefact, for giving this the attention it deserves.
As long as the same shit is anime and not boring 3D cartoon, and regular cartoon shows like the shit they spew at pixar, Nickelodeon, and even Cartoon Network nowadays, I do not mind at all.
I'll gladly drink the shit out of all the main (loli) heroines of all the new anime.
(opens mouth to eat straight from the source)
It's just a fad, the same reason practically everything on primetime US television nowadays is either a crime drama or "reality" TV. They'll move onto something else soon enough, and then make almost nothing else but that for several years. That's just how things work - always has been and always will be. If you can't enjoy it then just wait it out with another hobby because there's no sense whining over immutable realities.
i think there are a lot of crappy anime, and that there are easily as many crappy reality shows. what pains me is that people are complaining about the idiocy of 2d when the stupidity of 3d goes applauded -_-
thats exactly how the loli/fan-service craze began. and how did that end? with a big fat nation-wide ban. moderation is they lacking ingredient.
Why is Madoka in the diagram? I didnt know she was a "useless male protagonist"...
At least I can look foward to some hot loli/futanari doujinshis in the future....
Read it wrong anon says
Anime producers can probably be forgiven the succession of egomaniacal female leads, but the inability to construct meaningful male protagonists
Inability to construct meaningful male protagonists -> Leave them out altogether -> Madoka Magicka.
SHAFT for president.
Don't forget tentacle raep. You can't have mahou shoujo doujinshis w/o tentacle raep.
And considering the "witches" look like puke, you're gonna need a lot of tentacles and yuri
It gets old. In fact, it already got old.
If the guy went, "screw these bitches, I'm not doing this", there wouldn't be anywhere to go, would there?
Although they could always just drop the male protagonist.
Then they need to stop it with the bitches then I would think, there are other kinds of ways to portray a heroine you know...
That being said, they need to do something about the male lead's development as it is never all that good in most anime...
This gets me thinking... why don't some anime tries to do a school vs school setting? Since we get so damn many schools going on, may as well have a school rivalry anime.
@ Shippoyasha
ikkitousen?
Thought they kind of did that with Ookami-san
the industry is only giving what the fan base wants~
Nothing wrong with pandering to the base now and then.
Every single anime = now and then?
I agree!!! IS MINE TOO!!! Basically schoolife.
It's my favorite genre too. Though weakling schoolboys are not required.
Why don't you just watch hentai then?
Seriously, how many animes in the last season had an actual plot, good writing and tongue-in-cheek humor?
How many had real suspense, real drama?
But hey, of course I just get downvoted for this because people don't want to discuss about these matters anymore, right?
a little raipu will fix that up.
I want to see more anime where the main male lead is a total badass and the female is a timid little girl jumping at her own shadow. It'd really be nothing but a reverse of the current trend sure, but it might shake it up a bit to make it interesting...
A lot more blondes than usual...
A lot of anime this season seems really enjoyable. They just want to complain because they have nothing else to do. Damned NEET hikkis.
While I do agree that there is pretty much no originality coming from any anime this season, it's not like there is absolutely no originality in any given 1 & also there hasn't been enough episodes to even start saying such a thing yet...
^THIS and seconded
i think it's enough to say that watching multiple will make it become work rather than the recreation it is supposed to be. either way, i do agree watching 3 episodes in before dropping is a fair decision.
so far i've watched Gosick & Level E. Gosick's start was extremely dry, but as it neared towards the end of the episode, as with most mystery plots, it became more intriguing. Level E imho just reeked of deja-vu .
i conclude by wondering how far a cliché mystery plot could go to surprise the audience as well as decide to give Level E a few more watches before re-evaluating.
I actually don't care if the plot in any anime is even developed at all in the first episode as that is where they should begin the character development imho...
It's a better investment seeing as the episodes don't really leave enough time to develop the plot enough by themselves...
well, in the first episode, the conflict should be clear as crystal. how intriguing the conflict is usually determines if the show is worth continuing.
Well, yes, I agree, the conflict should determine if the show is worth continuing but for the main plot, it can be revealed a little further along the line like episode 2 or 3...
assuming non arc type plots, considering most here are going to span 13 episodes long, 2-3 episodes is rambling. if the conflict is revealed in the 2nd or 3rd episode, most people will loose interest quickly.
the crisis should come in about 3rd episode on if the show is planning on being "good". should the crisis drag, it would not hurt the show as much.
in the event the plot is an arc type, the more important is it to establish the conflict as quick as possible.
if it's gonna be like L*S, it'll be heavier on the jokes & characters.
Madoka Magika didn't have any we were cheated!
Could care less about generic themes.
I'm still gonna watch all before July...
well....at least the wishy-washy protagonist in Magika Madoka is a girl..?
Same can be said about zombie.
