Newly aired otoko no ko anime Hourou Musuko (“Wandering Son”) has been greeted with universally positive appraisals, with many even considering it potentially one of the best of season in spite of dangerous levels of pattern deviance.
The story itself is adapted from the manga original, which depicted the complex gender identity issues facing a pair of adolescents, and was generally well received as a relatively serious work despite the obvious appeal of a title featuring crossdressing boys and girls.
The anime adaptation appears to be following in this vein, with fans of the original noting some change in pacing but otherwise approving.
Some have complained that the anime seems overly bright and washed out – possibly broadcast contrast issues are involved.

A serious show about gender identity? I wonder if I could show this to my progressive gay rights activist friend who hates anime, lol.
Do it. It's very realistic.
yes you could. or your parents. it's just that kind of thing ^_^
I remember reading this manga. Though I never did finish it. Got far too boring.
The covers of the manga are done in water colours so the bright washed out look is done to reflect that.
The art style in the anime really stays true to the manga.
The only problem I have with the anime so far is the worry that it won't last long because it starts so late and is for a monthly manga.
I remember reading the manga for a bit. After the first few chapters, it became glaringly obvious that it was Sexual Deviancy 101 after which I dropped it altogether. While I've nothing serious against genderbending, crossdressing or even real-life homosexuals, I'm interested in reading-- or this time, watching-- how someone becomes so.
*I'm NOT interested*
LOL I made a typo orz
It's not deviant. They're transsexuals.
is this what they call... 'the shining'? XD
looks like everyone is covered in lube...
I hope this will get better, it definitely has potential and I didn't see any sick stuff yet.
The manga never went 'sick' in the way people hope, it's much more of a psychological kind of story.
One of my absolute favorite mangas ever despite the very minimalistic art style... Hope the next volume gets released soon as we're approaching the end afaict.
Psychological stores can be moving in their own way, too. I mean even though nothing particularly dramatic was happening during some parts of the show, I was feeling nervous.
Traps are hawt.. im ok with this!
Its even harder to understand then the manga, especially since they skip alot of the beginning. Still looks better then alot of the other generic anime thats being released lately though.
Yeah, the front loading cut out over a year of character development and cut to Nitori being in middle school. I think a lot of new audiences will be confused as hell over what's going on sometimes.
I think they're doing a good job of keeping the intrigue up. I'm gonna keep watching.
Looks good to me! as soon as it looks like a chick id fuck it! remember there is still 2 holes you can insert!
I've found that all of Shimura's anime works tend to look overly bright because the animators seem to love making everything look like the watercolor paintings she does for her book covers.
Anyway, yes, I approve.
Maybe I'm crazy, but last night was a breath of fresh air. I really wasn't aware of noitaminA until last season (when my wife started watching Kuragehime on the advice of a friend), but it's looking like I'll be finishing both series this season.
Now, when's the post going up for Fractale? See, I was looking forward to Hourou Musuko and it was just as good as I hoped, but Fractale surprised the hell out of me for just how good it was (and all that with old-school art)...
Holy shit, the art is incredible.
I will give it a chance after i watch fractale
and i find ironic that when ending the fractale episode theres a preview of this one... oh well let's give it a chance...
I normally enjoy serious stories dealing with serious issues. But due to shits going on in my life right now, I think I'll stay away from serious animes like this one for the moment. It does look pretty well produced though.
Looks adorable.
I honestly don't know why I clicked this article... It's NOT because it said Shota!!
I kinda like that animation style. Definitely gonna pick up this series if I have time.
Shiny heads?
interesting drawings, will watch interesting.
i mostly read. "whimper shine bitch moan."
there were a few posts that pointed out that ya need to have read the manga. which is very accurate.
i enjoyed it and i am looking forward to the rest of the season.
Whoa the animation looks....weird.
ITS A TRAP!
might watch it though ^^
well in sometimes the artwork looked nice like Makoto Shinkai's ones (to me is more like a movie) and noitaminA projects overall are nice I have good hopes on this one because the serious theme is taken here, to me was kinda slow but nice, btw anybody noticed that Nitori ejaculated @20:53? that was OMFGFTW!!!
Major plot point too.
Nitori is beginning puberty and her body is beginning to move further and further from her goal.
For transgender youth, puberty is horrifying.
don't let the atrocious OP and ED discourage you : it has it's own graphic style and promise interesting stories for us, gender-challenged misfits
(seriously, the OP singer sounds like a duck attached to a spinning chair)
I've been waiting to see this for a while. The larger theme from the manga IMO is about growing up and finding out that love and romance isn't all violets and roses, and the gender issues is just a part of this.
It is very pastel.
takatsuki yoshino X nitori shuuichi <3 <3 <3
Pff.
Takatsuki x Chiba is better.
Thumb this comment DOWN if you agree and UP if you're bored :D
Weird art style....
Looks fairly good to me.
looks interesting. i think i will watch it.
Was never really into shota.
But am interested. Will definitely watch.
just so you know this story skips ahead a few volumes of the manga so some might be confused,
also this story is quite actually very deep and original, but might be boring for some
It is definitely interesting. The art style is relatively unique. While I didn't expect anything interesting out of this anime I was pleasantly surprised.
It has nice pacing and while it might seem strange half way in you are probably going to like it by the end.
You should definitely watch it and at least give it a chance.
Even though some people may not like the show's content/story, the overall quality of the show is very high. It's a very well produced show.
