Actually in a retail I had I was told some very fun stories, such as a priest shop-lifting porn DVDs. Hearing that was a true moment of self discovery, because it was the first time I'd ever experienced my reactionary disgust for humanity at doing something so trite as shoplifting being completely overcome by the irony of a priest shoplifting pornography. Do not ask me how, but it actually made me love humanity more after hearing that.

Shoplifting hurt stores, and piracy hurts artists, but for some reason the pirates think they're better and even claim that they're helping the artists.
Piracy doesn't hurt artists, people not buying their stuff hurts artists. If you pirate something and then purchase it, the piracy doesn't detract from their gains. Piracy doesn't cost anything; not purchasing shit blindly costs those who make garbage that no one would buy if they knew any better potential sales. Just shows that now you need to create product that people think is worth supporting, rather than relying on marketing to sell your shitty product.
Of course, that also requires the consumer to take the initiative themselves to support the works they enjoy, which might require a bit more maturity than the average 14 year old has.
The negative externalities of a climate in which piracy is widespread do appear to be considerable.
