3DS “Only 8 Launch Titles” “Batteries Last Just 3 Hours”

Nintendo’s latest promotional event for the upcoming 3DS reveals plenty of last minute detail, not all of which is being greeted favourably.
The latest round of announcements coincided with a hands-on event in Chiba which saw some 500 souls braving the chill…
Most notably, Nintendo is saying the device’s batteries will only last for 3-5 hours in normal gameplay (5-8 with DS titles), and take 3.5 hours to recharge. By way of comparison, the PSP is rated at some 4-6 hours.
This, coupled with the various dire warnings about the 3D screen causing blindness and eye cancer in little children, has served to take some of the lustre off the otherwise outstanding hardware on offer.
The 3DS itself is due on the 26th of February, for ¥25,000 – other regions get it slightly later, in March and at about $300.
The (Japanese) release line-up is also attracting opprobrium – only 8 titles are on offer, retailing around the ¥5,000-¥6,000 mark:
Most of the other top titles are dated 2011 “spring” and beyond – and MGS, Biohazard, DoA and Zelda are all undated save for “2011.”
Its likely success does not really seem to be in doubt, but without so much as a Mario title the launch does appear to be rather weak…

AS a "fighting gamer" I'd buy it to play SF IV and BlazBlue, maybe some JRPGs.
I'd play Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue : Continuum Shift II & whatever that first game is, looks like Samurai Warriors : Chronicles...
Hope to see some JRPGs on there soon though...
NINTENDO I STILL WANT MY SMASH PORTABLE, HURRY UP ALREADY.
On another note, cancer? Just sounds bizarre.
whoa blindness and cancer? show us the sauce Artefact
places like fox news are blowing it out of proportion.
its that children 6 and under shouldn't use it in 3d due to there eyes still developing and the higher strain 3d puts on them. it could be the difference between 20/20 and 20/40, but its not causing blindness or cancer.
the cancer is already falling from the sky, so don't mind about the 3ds
so me going to watch toy story three in 3d put me at risk of getting cancer?
nintendo even said this at their events. It might interfere with toddlers vision development. This is relative to ALL 3d tech.
AAAND the Optometric Association found that it does NOT harm children's vision. Quite the contrary, it HELPS vision.
http://3ds.nintendolife.com/news/2011/01/3ds_may_be_beneficial_to_young_players_eyes_actually
Deal with it.
I believe blindness and cancer is a bit overkill, but bad for the eyes for children, probably...
But that goes for all things 3D. Such as movies, games, girls, etc. Just to mention a few...
As far as i know if you keep watching a 3D tv you can probably get blind and shit like that... i read it in some gamer site but i dont have the current link now
The first game is Sengoku Musou Chronicles, yeah...
For all "Love+ gamers", they buy it for one sole reason...
I'm one of them...
(I'd play other games too...)
"fighting gamer"
Yeah, It means I'm a player who prefers fighting games, I just created that word, ins't that awesome?
you're original
if both games retain all the characters and gameplay and in blazeblues case, speed, ill buy them day fucking 1 of owning a 3ds, granted im not getting one till zelda comes out.
Should someone with a name like that be using sarcasm?
Megaman Legends 3 when??
another game that would be a system seller for me.
hmm. for blazblue, i would need a stick. i might end up breaking the system without it.
Playing a fighting game on a D-Pad? Are you some kind of masochist?
Stick or Keyb all the way!
what the fuck is keyb? keyboard? something i never heard of.
and arcade sticks are a point of preference. while i prefer them, and am more proficient a them, they are unnecessary.
i can play games with the analouge stick (for 360) and with the dpad for the ps3 just as good as with a stick, its just the matter of getting use to it.
"playing a 2D fighting game on a dpad or an analog "flat-stick" on a 3d mobile console", you could even say :)
Fighting games on a keyboard? LOL
That's retarded. Keyboards are only good for work. Or things that are like work, such as WoW.
keyboard>pad any day.
still, gimmie d@ sanwa denshi and that roach and we got ourselves a nig
lol no.
you obviously never seen a key-stick.
Hold! The phone!
BlazBlue Continuum Shift II!? In 3D!?
I don't care if the system's not as good as DSi! I'm SO getting this!!
@Anon 20:51
love that attitude. im tired of hearing guilty gear purist say that bb sucks. i must say, its a dam good fighting. however the story is dry as hell and some chars are blatent anime rips.
Not to forget that it's just a freaking PSP (7 years old now) with 2 screens and VERY gimmicky 3d that amounts more to "magic eye pictures" then real/current 3d...
Stop drinking the cool aid already..
Uhhhhhhh no. The 3D effect is exactly like that in the cinema. Stop being all assertive over bullshit that you grabbed out of your ass.
In all fairness. If there were an authority on who gets to be assertive about bullshit pulled from HIS ass, it's got to be him.
BlazBlue Continuum Shift? On my 3DS?
There go my hopes for a PSP port... O_o
>_<
But, it'll last for 5-8 hours when playing DS software. Just like the DS.
DS lasts upwards of 12 hours with full backlight
And DSi lasts 3-4 hours with full backlight just like the 3DS. But that never stopped anyone from buying a DSi.
So, the 3DS has the same battery life as DSi. Hardly a problem.
The problem is for playing 3DS games. Which is understandable. I don't want to buy the console when I know that they will inevitably improve the ergonomics and batterylife with the next SKU.
honestly, i am never away from a outlet for longer than 2 hours where i could plug a 3ds in, if i was going to play it at all, no not a fucking problem.
and to
Shippoyasha
15:47
i dont think they are going to make this one smaller, i really don't. if 3d movies take off on this, which they could, they may make the screens bigger, even if it sacrifices battery life a bit.
ill probably get gen1, gen3, and final gen of this handheld.
i totally agree with Shippoyasha about nintendo which regularly offers failed-by-design first generation products : remember how GBA and NDS were clumsy, butt-ugly and what happened to them one year or so later ? Concerning GBA, you could tell something was planned just by reading the Technical Requirements Chart
with the gba, to be fair, nintendo wanted long battery life, and that wasn't possible or cost effective with back lighting at its launch, or at least leading up to its launch. and with the nds, was there anything wrong with it? asside from the "it looks ugly"?
I definitely remember my DS battery life extending longer then 8 hours & this was while playing a DS game in it, around half to 3/4 of a day is about accurate...
That's your DS, but they don't make those anymore. The DSi is 3-4 hours. But since DSi had no trouble selling, Nintendo probably used that as the benchmark for now.
I don't expect significantly increased batterylife for the next upgrade, they are more likely to add more features instead that would cause the battery to last the same length.
I know, I just didn't know what model of DS they were referring to exactly...
I can always play it while keeping the charger plugged up anyway so it is very irrelevant...
I would have gotten a DSi but I quickly heard about the 3DS so I decided that that wasn't happening...
"coupled with the various dire warnings about the 3D screen causing blindness and eye cancer in little children, has served to take some of the lustre off the otherwise outstanding hardware on offer."
trying to kill off the lolis and shotas I see... >_>
Children do have a habit of sitting or looking to close to the screen.
Actually this is a problem with all 3d tech nowadays. Even going to a bunch of those 3d movies can in theory cause blindness or vision problems. It's nothing new to the 3ds other than the 3ds is accessible at home.
Its been a problem forever. Watch tv too close and your eyes get fucked up. All this really isn't anything new.
Yea but it's a bigger issue with 3d. You're basically tricking your mind into seeing 3d images by showing a different one to each eye when they want the same image. Because of that it can really hurt vision development in small kids.
How does it cause eye cancer though?
To my knowledge it doesn't. But then again everything can cause cancer these days.
@Yden If you has 2 eyes you has a binocular disparity, so you ALWAYS see 2 different images at the same time.
"the same image".
What?
I guess 3DS owners will have to be both the proper age and use it moderately. Not good news.
The solution to allow more hours of gameplay would be turning off the 3D but that's the main feature of this handheld.
Yden, are you retarded? Your eyes see a different image each!
@Anonymous 17:58
Do you know if there is an off-feature? I myself think 3D is overrated. The only game I'm interested in is Ace Attourney x Professor Layton.
Supposedly there's a button to turn off the 3D so the little kids can play without atrophying their eyes' development (because we all know kids never do what they're not supposed to and think long term!)
Seriously, kids should stick with their DSis; parents won't be able to control their hourly usage of the 3D feature and you know how retarded parents are. I can already see a line of lawsuits to Nintendo that will go around the globe.
It can cause cancer anytime as long as it is made in china
the only cancer i'm worried about is the cancer of society, like iShithara. He should have been dead but, like cancer, just doesn't want to die
3DS without the 3D = the newest DS for Nintendo to fight piracy. 3DS was hyped because the 3D is suppose to be epic but the screen is small as hell and requires the user to have nerves of steel. so what's the big deal, 3D in the movies was cool but still kinda lame. the screen you're looking at is massive and the 3D trick doesnt cause such heavy eye strain.
3D is such a fuckin' gimmick. Since when do I want my movies and games to be like theme park rides?
When are they going to add smells and taste to media?
I want to know how my characters smell like.
