    It really does say a lot for a production when things like this happen. It really isn't so much about fan fanaticism as it is that something really does give off a general energy of something special about it. The people who react negatively to those who feel there's something special about it are merely reacting to that which is special about it as well, otherwise they wouldn't react to it.

    Really due to how much I enjoy original twists on things, I would actually be curious and interested in this class getting a Negima style spin-off about them to see what they could do with it. In the right hands it could sincerely create a very fun series. It should be a given that odd-sounding ideas generally lead to the most entertaining of the modern concepts. Hell, look at Panty and Stocking.

    If you look closely into the series, there's some pretty deep philosophical themes coming up here and there, revolving around problems of society. Also there's alot of hidden meaning. Also, it's obviously sarcasm.

    while i personally would go to such length... who are u two AND ishihara etc.. to judge whether or not their life is "sad".. why must we chase the carrot the man made society made for us. while i dont agree that people HAVE to be different, that being a sheep is bad... as the way i see it, i'd rather be a sheep, stay with the group and survive, than being a sheep that think of itself as a wolf and wander off by itself and end up dying...(weird analogy...) i think its alright to give into peer pressure (as long as its not stupid)... what these "otakus" did is obsessive, but did they harm anyone? they made their "work" public so that some people may enjoy their little background research... why do you guys have to judge?

    I'll tell you why. Because I think that majority of those otakus would rather spent time banging a girl, but they cant do that, so they have to spent their time on something else.

    It's not that they dont have other pleasures in life. It's that they CANNOT have those pleasures because of insufficient social skills, uncertainty and weak character. If someon brought those pleasures to them on a silver plate I'm sure they (most of them) would gladly abandon this K-On analizing thing and take that instead. Am I making sense? I hope so.

    Frankly I don't see how this is any different from anything else people put a godawful amount of time in. Minecraft anyone? Or, hell, anything that involves collecting anything, or mastering some kind of otherwise useless skill like hitting a tiny ball into a hole with a stick.

    But when it comes to traditionally perceived "nerd" stuff, people have to get all insulting about it. This feels like when someone builds a huge and awesome lego house, and there's always the one fucktard who has to go "lol you have too much free time".

    One reason people focus on details of a given subject so much is so that they have something outside of work to talk about with people, and have a group of people they can be part of.

    There are plenty of mainstream hobbies like this:

    * Tabletop Strategic Games (WW I, WW II, the American Civil War, Mechwarrior, etc.)
    * Model Railroading
    * Granny's Huge-Ass Porcelain Doll Collection (fills two rooms)
    * Slot-Car Racing
    * Coin Collecting
    * Rock Collecting
    * Stamp Collecting
    * Fossil Collecting
    * Warhammer 40K
    * Birdwatching
    * Origami

    ...etc.

    As a reader/watcher, I appreciate the fact that the authors cared enough about their story/manga/anime/movie to create a detailed world.

    That many people spend time ferreting out/speculating/arguing over the details of that world -- with the exception of the few seriously-overboard-delusional, character-X-is-my-waifu types -- is a response to and appreciation of the effort the authors spent.
