Recettear Sales Top 100,000

The English language release of doujin item shop RPG masterpiece Recettear has proved an astonishing success, selling 100,000 copies since its release in September.
Translators Carpe Fulgur say that not only has the game sold 100,000 copies already (they expected a mere 10,000 in 6 months), they have earned several times more than they anticipated, securing their company’s fortunes for the time being.
Marring the success slightly, Carpe Fulgur complain that they blundered by bundling the game with a collection of chaff games for $5, causing some of their revenues to be split five ways despite everyone buying the pack solely for the privilege of saving Recette from her crushing debt.
In any case, Carpe Fulgur seem confident they made more than enough to keep translating doujin titles for the western market (not that many doujin games are up to the standard of Recettear).
More importantly, developers EasyGameStation reportedly received an even larger mountain of cash from the success, doubtless an unexpected boon for the developer of a formerly obscure doujin title released several years ago.
With record sales (for a translated doujin game at best and an item shop RPG at worst), fans will doubtless be hoping EasyGameStation will consider a sequel – and if not, that more item shop RPGs will be forthcoming.
Certainly, an Atelier or Disgaea game based on hawking potions to Kishida Mel’s moeblobs or pointy sticks to Prinnies might well have some potential…

I'm a proud owner of this game as well. Got it off Steam during a sale.
I got it on Steam as a $5 bundle with Jolly Rover, And Yet It Moves, Gish, and Puzzle Agent.
Huh? That game is available for 5$? O.o

This ONE is truly memorable for merely a DOUJIN GAME.
This IS one of the BEST example of MAXIMIZATION of minimal Games ever been created on 21st century ( hopefully my verbose statement got through ^^ )

It was a fun little game. Though not really in the same tier as Battle Moon Wars and the like.
I hope they put their gained funds into good use and make another game.
As for the translators...I think they took too many liberties. No, I'm sure of it...
Trying to make it sound more natural is fine, but that was too much. It was still fun too read though.

Do you even realize the "Yayifications", "Capitalism, ho!" and "Yepperonni" (was it?) are all thanks to the liberties the translators took, right?
Recette was so goddamn adorable and meme-worthy thanks to that. It gave the game CHARM, and that's what matters, in my opinion.

Weird Japanese conversation structure (in a game that doesn't have a Japanese setting at all, so there's no reason for it) is more awkward than anything.
I don't care what liberties they take. In the end all that matters is, am I enjoying this, or am I straining to read the mood and intended implications from this text?
I guess for certain people, the latter is kind of a sport that they enjoy. Not for me.
The dialogue was adorable, but it was just bad as translation.
They went way overboard with the liberties.
It was like they were making up 80& of the text.

I'd actually rather translation liberties over stick-to-the-boring-script type of translations.
It reminds me of Working Designs, and we all loved those localizations back in the day.
Not only that, but the script overall reads better and feels better to us, as some jokes/puns/whatever wouldn't really be understandable otherwise.
But ah, these kind of translations always piss off weaboos (Not reffering to you, just weaboos in general) since they're not "OMG GLORIOUS NIPPON DIALOGUE XDXD".
Amen my friend. Japanese language is a whole different way of thinking, not just a different way of speaking. To normal folks, any translation that does anything less than completely re-interpret a script is just going to sound extremely awkward, even if the grammar and style is correct.
Some people just don't understand this.
(note: I do think a fairly direct translation is fine if the viewer is actually expecting to see a more japanese script, such as a lot of anime with a fairly realistic japanese setting. In fact I may prefer that sometimes, myself.)
QFT. Direct translation is nice if you have some degree of familiarity with the language, and awkward as hell otherwise. I think Carpe Fulgur did a good job with preserving the lighthearted feel of the game, and the cluelessness of Recette.
I'm guessing some people have just never seen Ghost Stories. The English translation had NOTHING to do with the original dialogue, but it is HELLA funny, and in the end, all that matters is whether or not you were entertained.
Let me ask you, and I'll only do it once people... ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? IS THIS NOT WHY YOU ARE HERE?

Not in English it wasn't. Carpe Fulgur is releasing it in 2011.
It doesn't have an item shop in it so they are back to square one. If you want a generic JRPG with low production values, there are already plenty on the PS3 and PSP.
Should the next step include an item shop? It could get old quickly. What about mayor of a Simulated City?
