Osaka’s manga ban is already in effect, and as the above list from a shop demonstrates, has already seen dozens of publications banned from general sale as “harmful publications.”
Unlike Tokyo’s ban, Osaka’s ordinance is mostly concerned with banning BL manga – with the Tokyo ban being extremely vague and covering everything from general manga to anime and games, the list there is likely to be much longer, and effectively national in scope due to the largest market and concentration of publishers both being in Tokyo.

...and we all know how America's ban on alcohol worked out nicely.
The material being banned is fringe enough that the general public won't care. Prohibition in the US failed because most of the population drinks alcohol at least occasionally. Now if the ban hit a truly mainstream title, say Doraemon, it might actually see some effectual opposition... but I doubt that anything "family friendly" will see the ban hammer anytime soon.
TL Note: "family friendly" means "profitable".
Alcohol Ban never worked anywhere. But its also a very mainstream drug. BL and Lolis is not. ;)
On the other hand, if they find the internet to publish it, it should be no problem. Banning online stuff is at the moment still completely impossible.
um...just more laws to be broken
that is what law meant to be, right?
This is gonna turn into a Library Wars anime.
is that a premonition?
Definitely is.
It's a good thing Mafuyu from Seitokai no Ichizon lives in Hokkaido. She loves BL.
But where will she order her fujoshi/BL goods from, if she can't find them in Sapporo?
Or will she be stuck with her SugiMegu slashfic?
This is insane. Hmm... Maybe we could bring some of these Manga companies to the States...
USA already destroyed their comics about 60 years ago. Japan is just following their horrible example.
true for mainstream stuff... drove the funky stuff underground. Where you can get Japanese comics uncensored here... assuming they are imported/licensed correctly. Bring 'em on...
eh i'm actually quite happy about it, Bl and Shota getting banned is the most wonderful thing mankind has ever witnessed in the otaku history, yet while i do realize loli had to be banned, i sorta feel a bit sad, LUVED THE LOLIS!
Indie comics are at a very strong place. Have you read many of last years indie comics from America?
i'm just not interested to american comic
Not really. Comics are more adult here now that ever before. The only problem the US has is the people with the power to change things are too retarded to see that nudity does not equal sex. Yet shit tons of violence is A-ok. We're backwards in that regard. Not to mention huge hypocrites as the 'most good' men usually get busted with affairs or some kind of scandal. Hypocrisy rocks.
Wrong Carrot,Tales from the Crypt is still around even though people have try to kill it in Government and yet it manage comeback from the dead its been around since the 1950's.
Now the Independent Comic book Industry in America tends to face many challenges with censorship but it doesn't stop people from buying what they sell they only restrict sales from Under age minors. You may notice now they are putting Rating systems on Manga's in the US restricting sales it doesn't stop those old enough to buy it or try to get a fake ID to buy one ether way.
The tea party people would protest
"Tea partiers" are all right wing christians (and gullible tools) who would love nothing more than to see this stuff banned on "obscenity" grounds (which, basically, makes them exactly the same as Ishihara). If you leave it to them the only manga that would be legal for sale in the U.S. would be Serenity.
Fuk the states, no way!
Seriously? The USA Govs are way more prudist then the japanese one, so I don't think it would help.
Europe maybe. But there you would have the same problem with violent material.. less with pornographic stuff on the other hand..
Obama will ban them..
no, he can't
Inb4 "Yes we can" joke.
But aye, I'm not sure either. I don't really fully trust the US regaring manga and anime either. But to a descent level.
US of A has a hard on against this and they would love to put all of us on a sex offender list just for looking at Sankaku! >.<
Are you an idiot or what? There has been people bitching about banning shit in US before. However, they always get bitch slapped by the 1st amendment. That's why those pro-censorship groups always pick countries oversea to bully.
implying manga will be selling in US
It's only a matter of time before chaos and hell break loose.
That already happened long ago. What's the stage we're in now? I forgot.
I expect something to happen at ACE
The banning disease is spreading :(
i wish there was a way to stop this but....*sigh*
This is just fucked up, where will it be next, oh god I'm actually scared a little...
Please tell me there is some kind of hero to take out this virus known as the Banning Disease...
Well, fuck.
Run to Hokkaido.
as if it was safe there...
damn you, moralist faggots!
you made me stand up for BL manga and i never thought i would do that
for that alone i will feed you your own cocks
one day for sure...
They can always go underground..., welcome to black market!
Could this be the base where fujoshi and otaku rise and unite under a single banner?!
...
...
Nah. Who am I kidding?
Pssst! Hey you!
Yeah you!
Listen, *looks left/right* I've got with me some extra yaoi.
Better get it fast bro, cuz the lolis stock dried up yesterday.
You interested? I'll make'em cheap this time.
....is what I imagine after July '11.
It's official: Japan is sinking! Japan, start the election now before it's too late!

I can sooo picture that...and can't stop laughing.
We'll, "seriously" from what you're asking: it's a ban on "harm publications" not people.
As Arte has already linked to the previous post on Osaka's decision, the ban is really vague as to what exactly is harmful, since it encompasses a wide range of publications.
And yes, yaoi (or yoai in your case) is deemed 18+ most of the time. Like Hentai and Ecchi terms, there's a borderline to what is dickteasing and not. /horriblepun
And err.... you seem concerned about the future of BL. *backs away*
Little problem, alidan.... not everyone agrees on what should be "18+" stuff. Personally, I am more worried about my daughters having unprotected sex than I would be about them getting hentai and even loli stuff online or in stores.
Would give me peace of mind that at least they are not sleeping with boys w/o birth control!
nah what i was wondering is what the osaka ban would actualy effect. because if it was a "ban" that just made it a law that anything that says 18+ or you know damn well shouldn't be in the hands of kids anyway, that i dont see a big problem, but if it effected other, like it apparently does, than i cant condone it.
They could always do somthing similar too what running with scissors did with there game postal...
though i suppose not too many people would actualy back the digital sales market if they can get it for free :/
i have a serious question here.
is this a shonen ai like ban, where even a hint of gay people gets banned, or is this a yoai ban where its obvious, or shown?
because the shonen ai, would effect a hell of alot more than a yoai, because isnt yoai like ones already a 18+ material?
i dont think either ban is good or fair, but one seams far more reaching than the other.
Run for the hills!
Japan's use of the Ban Hammer is unruly, and entirely not the way the Ban Hammer was intended to be used. Someone must wrest their power over it away from them.
I say we invade Japan and instate a newer, less anti-otaku government.
But take a couple of bishies with you in case you get ronery
the end of otaku love ended faster than 2012!

Oh wait, she probably fell victim of the ban...
You're right. This is as much news as the last 15 times they ran a piece on Miku popping up in the news in another country.
Old story recycled to feed on peoples fear of the ban and pump up hits to the site.
thank god
