Otaku buyers share the contents of their “fukubukuro” purchases of 2011, both lucky and unlucky.
Fukubukuro, “lucky bags,” are a traditional Japanese New Year retail custom consisting of a sealed bag or box sold at a set price with unknown contents.
The value of the goods in the bag may be substantially more or less than the price of the bag, although on average reputable retailers tend to be quite generous.
However, one of the primary functions of the bags is disposing of unsold stock, which can lead to some distinctly undesirable contents even when the price of the goods exceeds the cost of the bag.
All kinds of goods can be found in them, games and figures being no exception…
Figures and goods:
¥8000 “Nendoroido-fukuro” & ¥5000 “Nendoroido-fukuro+”:
Games and similar:
Sharper retailers have in the past created considerable outrage amongst buyers by packing all their bags with junk of the most useless kind, and even amongst kinder retailers there are supposed to be both “hits” and “misses” – as ever, caveat emptor.
The worst of the worst (thankfully most probably a Photoshop creation as no shop so cruel could hope to remain in business for long):

I'd love it if I had this lucky bag.
pillowcase FTW?
i wish they did this kind of crap in america, just make sure the value in the bag exceeds what the cheapest reputable online dealers sell it for, and there you go, get rid of stock for 20$ before you are forced to charge 5-10$ to get rid of the shit.
In Singapore, there are some candy shops that have this kind of thing. The packs are mostly priced at around 2-5 bucks and the contents are usually little toys or sweets, and maybe some rare trading cards.
@Anon12:06,what TCG is that?
This reminds me of an auction for some reason but is so different from one as you can't see what you are getting & there is a set price...
I would never tempt that there as I don't think I would be able to afford it for some reason...
Woah! A PS3 for 29800, in Yank dollars it is like 367.22! THAT'S AMAZ-- Oh wait is not that cheap.
well, you did notice that there were other items in that package i hope?
It is not even a PS3; that's the external video recorder add-on.
actually, no. that's the torne pack(ps3+torne). although, really, you can find those at a second hand store at roughly the same price(book-off had one at 22.000円)
hay, is there a dvr thing for north america?
¥8000 Yen or roughly $100 US for nine Nendodroids?
Do want.
If I bought that last mystery box of shit, I'd pack it all up and slam it into the dude who sold it to me~ I'd only feel dirty that I even touch that shit while they haul me off to the clinker!
its things like this that make me wish to visit there to do some shopping :3
dude, thats so cool...
Nice Transformers figures! I wonder how well Transformers: War for Cybertron sold in Japan.
I've seen some sites that imported them but they're getting released under Transformers United over there. I'm think of getting Soundwave at least.
I did stumble upon them in the shops. Yes grab the japn version, you can see the reason, their paint job is better, eg: Optimus Prime has that Chrome Red instead of just painted red.
Yep, Takara FTW. It's funny yet logical to see that the Hasbro releases are usually sold in regular toy stores while the Takara ones are in Collector/Hobby shops..
Come to think of it, I better grab that Human Alliance Barricade since they're selling it for only $20 on clearance sales at a local store.. :3
I guess the ones released by Hasbro is for kids and people who don't have much cash
Less copies than any manga I bet.
Some of these are great.
I like that ¥1000 one, it's like your own mini-army of Nanoha and Fate clones. Although it would really suck to get that bundle if you didn't like Nanoha.
Nendoroids at 8000 yens are not really good fukubukuro.
You can easily find LovePlus nendoroid at 1500 yens, BRS at 2500 and the others in 1500-2500 yens price range
8000 for 5 nendoroids is good no matter what
^exactly.
PROTIP: Most Nendoroids cost HALF what they retail for at Play-Asia, Hobby Search, etc a month after release. It's only gullible foreigners who'll still pay that much. Why do you think they ony carry such limited stock - because they don't want to be stuck with them at that price.
That many Squeenix games at once... suicide rates are on the rise.
I wish this practice would catch on in every country.
Cheap 99 cent stores here do stuff similar to this but who really wants a hand full of candy and a toy made in Taiwan?
An Austrian computer store does that around Christmas for 21-25€ afair, where you will get random components(HDDs, USB sticks, head sets - just to name a few) with at least the equal or more value delivered.
They called it "SOMETHING" (or "ETWAS" in German).
Unfortunately in 2009 there were lot's of anti-virus programs sent out, with some customers trying to return them by using Distance Selling Act law - a lot of hilarity and assholery(one of the staff members called a customer a racist slur in their retail outlet) ensued as the "SOMETHING" wasn't intended to be returnable but had to under the law.
Christmas 2010 was better I heard, with no anti-virus given out and lots of mouses, headsets, external HDDs (320+500GB), stereo speaker sets, USB-hubs and so on given out.
This time no online shopping was possible to avoid the law, so you had to go into their stores and chose a parcel which came in random sizes (but didn't give away what's inside - you could get a parcel shaped like a keyboard and find an USB stick in it).
In addition to handling it better, they also gave away an 11% discount coupon for the next purchase and there were some very lucky individuals who got a netbook, notebook, LCD monitor or beamer out of the parcels.
My bad, it was 2008 not 2009 where shit hit the fan.
Oh, and people were getting so greedy in 2008 since 2007 worked so well, one customer thought it was a good idea to order a "SOMETHING" with the address of his recently deceased neighbour (because the offer was limited to one purchase per customer).
The widow was pretty pissed and asked the shop if they had no decency at all.
As if making fake accounts as "family members" wasn't bad enough.
I'm guessing the proverb "never buy a pig in a poke" doesn't exist in Japan OR it just doesn't really apply to otaku that much.
Somehow the latter sounds so much more appealing to me. Must be related to some unrecallable past experiences of similar nature... Who can tell?
I've noticed they do stuff like this at conventions. I sort of like to know what I'm paying for though.
Well if you have little money and you can't afford wasting even a single pound then this tradition isn't working for you. But for someone at least in a comfortable financial position such thing might be fun since the whole thing is based around the mystery of what you got and if you got something awesome or something really bad.
ewww... western transformers sets. do not want.
Why aren't lucky bags like this over here, all our ones contain are cheap plastic toys (made in china no doubt) and sweets, and some with the occasional colouring book. I would love to have that SE one :P
