Madhouse’s New Anime Pure China Quality

Noted anime producer Madhouse has been reduced to the laughing stock of the industry after it emerged that the company is stuck producing an anime adaptation of an office comic for Chinese TV.
The anime itself is apparently an adaptation of an animation/4koma manga concerning the office adventures of a box-headed man, popular in China.
The announcement that Madhouse is pursuing some kind of joint venture (China actually banned foreign cartoons from its TV stations so Madhouse would likely not be able to operate independently in China in any case) with a Chinese partner comes by way of a JETRO newsletter; the only details so far made public are that it is a 52 episode TV series due in late 2011.
Strangely, the happy news is not yet mentioned on Madhouse’s site, although the comic’s site trumpets the fact.
Incidentally, Madhouse is owned by Index Holdings, a mobile phone software company which recently bought and dissolved Atlus and later posted some rather large losses – presumably it has decided China is the way forward and ordered Madhouse to pursue more business there.
Another troubled Japanese company, also with interests in mobile gaming and publishing, has recently been talking up its hopes that expansion into China will rescue it; the management of both companies seem increasingly to be engaged in corporate escapism – after struggling in both Japan and the west, all they can think to do is pin their hopes on China…

First thing that came to mind was a "dick in a box"
No, it's Snake inside the box doing office job.
It's one of his spy job on the company but ends up doing endless paper job due to wrong choice and game over.
Ever heard of Dick in a Box?
Yeah, its all going to be yaoi.
rule 34
It looks nice to me,
and I'd probably watch it too.
Then again it's probably because that's gonna be me soon
.... I think I'll jump off a bridge now =3=
Not sure why actually having business is laughable.
In Japan, China is the minor leagues. Remember the backlash at a Chinese produced Final Fantasy?
That said, I don't know why exactly Madhouse is on hard times. I was under the impression Highschool Of The Dead and Tatami Galaxy were well received. I wanna say Tatami Galaxy won a lot of 'Anime of the Season/Year' awards.
I mean... I believe it. I'm just surprised.
Madhouse are in severe trouble and they've been for some time. Just look at the Hellsing delays, and now also Black Lagoon.
Well, when the only place willing to do business with you is a country whose chief export is lead....
MKS if you actually get a job. Took me 1.5 yrs to find one... Then the companies fuck your ass hard everyday with tons of work and you can't leave because you are afraid of losing your job. And we keep supporting China slavery and the loss of our jobs to them by buying Chinese products. Oh Brave New World!
They should have called it
"The Adventure of Ananymous"
What's up with this site and Chinese, why not also India? :P
i believe they already did a joint anime project on the 80s/90s based on the Ramayana epic.
Because India has no relations to japan at all.
India Curry is spicy
Japan Curry is sweet
reality beez raciss
but for all people who are still not convinced , imagine the horrors of bollywood anime
@Anon21:17,that's fkin' racist
My urine is yellow as the japanese? i see a connection here.
India is full of brown ppl. Japanese people's shit is brown. connect the dots?
Don't even mention the curry's...
I think it's a political allegory. Box Head man obviously represents the Chinese proletariat, the red headed guy with glasses is the American bourgeoisie mocking box head man and oppressing him with his capitalist Christmas and "English" language.
Eh.. 3-Koma?

@Anon17:17,your translation's right~
(wanted to translated too)
So this is what a Chinese plagiarised Dilbert looks like.
Curry is good. No ditch curry.
so after thousands of years of being possibly the greatest cultural centre on earth, this is what chinese culture looks like?
what is wrong with this world...
I want to stay optimistic for Madhouse.
Their shit are some of the least cliche-ridden in all of the anime industry, with distinct art styles that truly match the works they produce or convert. I especially respect them after the ace thriller-suspense-drama that was Monster being converted panel-by-panel from the manga source with little to no self-modding or filler.
I'll wait some more and see what this shit's about. If it does turns out to literally be shit, it must be either because their client is China, or they didn't get paid enough, lol.
I don't see what's so bad about this. It's just another one of those simplistic 4 koma thingy that's meant to look simple.
And from what I've seem, the author of the satrical comic does put in a lot of work. And the quality of the source material isn't bad at all.
Hahaha looks funny and also kinda cute.
They may be ridiculed but these companies gotta do what they can in order to survive :p
Well, I guess he can't think OUTSIDE THE BOX!
Haha... ha... Ugh...
And yes, that was not related to your comment at all.
Not surprising reaction from sankaku...
every chinese relate will consider BIG fail here anyway
As fucked up as China is. It's still pretty obvious that Sankaku is very biased against Chinese.
You say this as though China doesn't DESERVE IT.
Being Biased isn't a good thing no matter what the reason is you retard!
There is no such thing as an unbiased news source. If you still don't understand that, take a step out of that 6 by 8 cell you call a room and get an education.
Simpleton.
It's okay, square-enix recently revealed the Final Fantasy trading card game to save their sinking ship...
New level of dick in a box.
So what. This wouldn't be the first time they've done work based on non-Japanese material before, albeit their first time for Chinese material.
They've previously worked on adaptations of American properties like The Boondocks and the Iron Man anime movie, as well contributed to The Animatrix.
I've always thought of Madhouse as the cream of the crop of anime studios. To me, just like KyoAni was "the" studio to make Type B anime, Madhouse was "the" studio to make Type A anime.
I wish Madhouse will still continue to make cutting edge anime. If worse comes to worse, I'll probably take out a loan for $100,000, look for the director of Gunslinger Girls, and ask then to make me a kickass OVA.
I mean, the dude who commissioned Training with Hinako was on to something. I want to make something similar, only Type A instead of Type B.
Probably just a side project to keep revenues coming between major projects.
In the business world you cant really afford to be racist. As long as theres money for it who cares if your client is pink yellow green black or blue.
Box headed men are different from us
WE MUST KILL HIM ACCORDINGLY BEFORE HIS KIND KILL US!!
Well, Madhouse at least does not make a stereo-typical anime about Chinese with a "pig tail" (when even this is not Chinese, but a Manchu characteric from the Ching Dynasty). I guess this simplistic look is for the low budget production to see how business goes in China before deciding to do business in China seriously. Lets say, it's more of an experiment.
Seriously, you can do some pretty serious business and make big money in China, more precisely in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The big EA and Ubisoft (games publishers and developers) have its games studios in Shanghai. So perhaps this is an okay decision for the long term. But Madhouse has to be careful, since piracy in China is still a very common thing, especially when ex-employees could steal your ideas and techniques and bring into their own new business (well, it can happen everywhere, not only in China)!
The Chinese government requires you to 'partner' with a Chinese company - so that 'entrepreneur' can steal all your labour, ideas and duplicate your industrial processes, then toss you out like a used tissue. Which is what's happened to chemical companies, the foreign railway manufacturers and the IT and electronics industries already - Madhouse obviously hasn't learned a lesson from Nippon Sharyo, Hitachi, Toshiba or Google.
I am surprisingly okay with this.
张小盒你好
张小盒再见
Is he related to Danbou san in the Yotsubato! manga?
This is Chinese Quality indeed...
Probably would still watch it though & I bet alot of you would too...
I knew for some times anime production companies have had much of their work done by Koreans for some time now. Is it really getting that bad to have to switch to China?
"Corporate escapism" is a very unfortunate phrase of our time.
