A ranking of Japan’s best selling games of 2010 not only proves a major embarrassment to Sony, with not a single title on the PS3 making the list, but also manages to raise some depressing questions about the tastes of the Japanese gaming public…
The ranking, by Rank Ohkoku:
1. Pokémon Black and White
2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
4. Dragon Quest VI
5. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2
6. Wii Party
7. Tomodachi Collection
8. Inazuma Eleven 3
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2
10. Wii Fit Plus
However, statistics for overall sales of all games seem to show the Wii with only a narrow lead over the PS3, with the PS3’s sales being dispersed over a much larger number of titles.
It should also be noted PS3 titles are generally more expensive (and several top selling Wii titles were actually older or budget priced), so the outlook for Nintendo is actually rather less favourable than it might at first appear.
That only a small minority of sales on the Wii are from non-Nintendo developers has also been pointed out as a sign of the platform’s weakness – not that it can have been called anything other than a massive success to date.

Can i have top 10 least selling games?, that would be more interesting = =
Haha, I think there was an article from a while ago about a very poorly selling game which sold something like 170 copies in total. Well... It was bad. XD
square's games XD
What's wrong with Monster Hunter and Pokemon? Just because it isn't Madden or Call of Duty doesn't mean they suck. I'm 22 years old, make 45,000USD a year, play Pokemon, and proud of it. And I hate Call of Duty.
I'm similar, but I don't hate call of duty. while it's one of my least favourite games I own, hate's a bit far. It has it's few uses.
people, don't buy casual portable shit, support the real developers, and we will see bright and shining future for game industry some day.
Nintendo has always ruled Japan in the game titles market. No surprises here.
I loled seeing the list
I facepalmed seeing the list.
^^^
I did the same....
When a glorified workout video outsells every single PS3 title, the only appropriate response is to facepalm.
I 100% agree with Megidola there.
i agree. nintendo pwned hard.
Monsta Huntaaaaaaa FTW!!.
What I think of this list...
1. Pokémon Black and White
"Kind of expected given certain numbers that were generated sells wise previously..."
2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd
"Not that shocked really..."
3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
"Not shocked at all..."
4. Dragon Quest VI
"I am not sure so I will ask, what system is this game for, thought they were on IX already?..."
5. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2
"Kind of shocked I guess..."
6. Wii Party
"Same as number 10..."
7. Tomodachi Collection
"Same as number 8..."
8. Inazuma Eleven 3
"I don't know about this so I won't say anything here..."
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2
"Thought it would be higher..."
10. Wii Fit Plus
"I don't even know what to say here..."
Not really a bad list, RELAX people...
It's a remake for the DS. The american version is coming out in february. :)
My bad, I'm talking about Dragon Quest 6
Thanks, in that case, glad to see it there...
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2
"Thought it would be higher..."
Japan has always greatly preferred 2D Mario to 3D. Its NA and EU that gobble up the 3D titles.
My point of thinking it should be higher on "this list" still remains valid...
not a single western game so sad.
Hey, I see videos of Japs playing CoD, Oblivion and other popular Western games all the time on Nico-NicoDouga.
They might not be on top in Japan, but the fact that there are people playing it, as well as such games continue to see its Japanese version complete with Japanese localization means that they're alive and well.
Who gives a fuck if it's not on top.
Actually, Black Ops was the number 1 seller for its first week on the Japanese market. There are plenty of Japanese people who play western games, but they're nowhere nearly as mainstream as pokemon, MH, etc.
Woot! POKEMON BLACK AND WHITE, YEAH !
What's so depressing about this list? I'd play everything on it except for Pokemon.
I play Pokemon, Sonic, Tales of, and tons of franchise JRPGs and such...
My roommate plays things like Dead Space and Red Redemption and Crisis and Half Life...
All my roommate says is that I should play "GOOD" games, and he tries to get me into a lot of his stuff.
I seriously think that we should stop trying to classify our "good games" with one culturally biased opinion. There is a ton of value in the "failing" JRPGs and platform games... or even weird sports games and random minigame-focused games. It's just dependent on the person playing and what kind of things they like. :/
You guys should both broaden your horizons. There are great JRPGs and great western action games as well, it's good to enjoy the variety of life.
Well, yeah, I know that. I just haven't found a western game that interested me much at all yet. And I feel like it's heavily dependent on the cultural aspect of each genre.
Like... there are lots of Americans who criticize the Japanese mindset and lots of Japanese who criticize the American mindset. Perspectives of Anime/Manga/Games/etc. reflect this in the reputation of characters and styles. Popular Japanese characters in Japan (non-gender biased) tend to lean toward being flawed with a lot of growing up to do. The American equivalents tend to be confident and strong, built on survival and action. Then, there's the popular "realistic art" vs. "stylistic art" argument.
In all, I just find Japanese games more enticing because even though I'm an obvious gaijin to look at, I grew up in a Japanese context and value a lot of what I see in Japanese games more than I do what I see in American games. I try to be open, but I just can't understand completely why zombie-like enemies, muscles, and guns can make a game more "fun" than cute creatures, unrealistically handsome/pretty-looking protagonists, and magic staffs--if that has anything to do with it.
Oh, those games huh?
Cool for their players.
I thought of the all Games in 2010 not only Japanese.
Oh Japan, the epitome of taste.
I wouldn't expect lists for America and Europe to be any better, they'd probably just be the same collection of awful wii games but with the occasional FPS.
Best Selling ≠ Quality
In the lists for America and Europe there would be something like Mass Effect 2, Starcraft 2, Cataclysm. Okay, these games are popular, but does popular equal bad? Compared to a lot of other games, they're definitely better. They are definitely made of quality.
What would be best to see is Japanese games dominating that Japan's list because of them being good. I don't know, maybe Final Fantasy could be that kind of a game if it wasn't poorly done. By that I mean, there should have been some real games, not those family games for Wii.
America would be dominated by Wii Fit and Black Ops.
Well, the stereotype is that Americans are fat and gun-crazy, those games would fit perfectly.
@TFish: Isn't it supposed to be Black Ops? I mean, 2-3 million copies sold in the first few weeks!?
The best selling game in America this year was New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Followed by Modern warfare 2, Bad Company 2, and Final Fantasy 13.
Best Selling means many more games just like the best selling, particularly if they can get away with doing them on the cheap.
Remember, everyone needs to pay the bills and feed the families and themselves.
Not to be a troll but were they all Wii games or any other system in there
psp at 2nd
so sony is not embarrassed.
Well at least they beat the Xbox lol Tks Was wondering couldn;t tell off just looking at the list
List looks fine to me. You don't honestly expect those shitty popular western games to be there do you?
Fuck yeah IE3
Looks kinda back and forth for me as i'm not into the pokemon and the wii *insert random next* games but everything else are fun to me but hmmm guess japan sees no fun in Ps3
You say that Pokémon is not your stuff... But why do you have Red as nickname?! O.O
Japan is done for alright.
people dont realise the significance of MHP3rd being second on this list when it came out on December the 1st of 2010
Japs love dem MH (i do too lol)
shit their taste SUCKS. Seriously, i love anime, but every fucking game is a sandbox. Try western games, japan.
Should be retitled "Top 10 Best Selling Games of 2010 in Japan"
no western games in the japanese top 10?!
thats a shocker, lol
xenophobic japan raises its ugly head once again
