The latest title in the Tales series, Tales of Xillia, has been announced as being due for a 2011 release on the PS3, and Namco have even released a preview video, showing off what look to be the best graphics yet for the series.
The preview:
Graphically it would appear to be the strongest Tales game yet, being well ahead of the mediocre Tales of Vesperia and the embarrassing Tales of Graces.
Aside from the fact Namco has basically been remaking the same game for the past 15 years whilst making various slight changes to the increasingly hackneyed shonen/shoujo “overwrought teenagers save the world” plotlines and creating ever more incomprehensible combat systems, the main issue appears to be whether Namco can still produce a finished game when it wants to…

so wut,we already wait for two tales of ps3 games here in the west
It actually looks pretty good. The scrawny overwrought teenagers who have to save the world are looking quite nice, too. C:
World-Saviours Wanted.
Ugly People Need Not Apply.
although it might be interesting to see ugly people save the world :D
I'd like to see a band of a Down-Syndrome kid, some fat kid with autism, a girl with only her face being disfigured by burn scars and an Elton John-lookalike old man trying to save the world.
This time they won't even have to port for a "more complete version".
THEY JUST MAKE A HELL LOT OF GAMEPLAY DLC!
Download this new Character.
Download new Skits.
Download new Skills.
Download an Epilogue.
And pay for everything. In before "Bugfix Pack #01 ¥600"
I'll pass Namco games from now on.
Might i ask why you would do so from now on?
They killed too much lolis...(?)
Nice picture so far
"... increasingly hackneyed shonen/shoujo “overwrought teenagers save the world” plotlines ..."
isn't that what most epic games do? i've played all of the relevent tales games. the only thing that gets old is gathering the elemental beings. i think i've done it in every single tales game... but if they would ever release the games over here, i would do it again...
They should make it so they are the ones trying to destroy the world order. But rather than fight faceless good guys have them fight a corrupt governor who bans a lot of stuff.
Sounds like something that might happen to japan soon
Let's not forget the "apocalypse has happened and/or is happening and you need to beat the shit out of everyone/everything in sight to even have a hope of doing something that may change something for the better... or pave the way for many future sequels!"
Gears of War
Fallout 3
Dragon Age 1 and 2
Mass Effect technically counts
Halo
That's just off the top of my head. Notice that people seemingly love seeing Earth get blown to shit/infested with random stuff/etc. It feels like it's an excuse to get you to go out of your way to kill everything possible (showcases battle engine, keeps you hooked).
Well, whatev.

Fixed chances :
Chances of this coming to US : 0.01%
Chances of this comign to EU : 0.00%
It's already obvious that we won't see localizations of Tales of games ever again because Namco Bandai thinks they don't sell enough. If they didn't replace the VA with dubs, and sold them in US with just subtitles I'm sure they would sell enough to be worth of it =_=
im buying that game and if its not being released to the west I'LL IMPORT THE DAMN THING >_<'
The question is: Who Fucking Cares?
The heck?! Panty? Panty is in a Tales game... wow!
I don't like the girl's hair animation.
this is getting repetitive... it really doesnt feel like the Tales series is really getting anywhere its the same old childish writing, when will it get truly deep? though i dont doubt that ToX will be a game at least worth playing, but the main problem i had with the Tales series is that the writing for both the story and the dialog seem to be written for 10 year olds... were its all "happy happy joy joy", and plot twists are all "forgive and forget"
the combat system is nice though, even if it hasnt really changed over all the games...
Funny. I've played every Tales game, with ht esole exception of the PSP titles. They all manage to stand on their own two feet.
Yes, the have recurring features and design elements but they all are a lot of FUN to play.
So then, that "10 year old plot". Here's a little challenge for you. Try to come up with a plot that is new and fits into design codex for Tales games. Story is only ONE element. It has to fit with character development, engaging gameplay, atmosphere, sound and all that jazz.
Tales games get that job done. If you don't think so ,that's your problem and not a general rule.
So you managed to read the whole script i take it? I'm curious, since most people who complain about the "repetitive nature" of Tales games either don't play them at all or recite hear-say.
@TNinja
They can patch PS3 games so we're at least protected from bugs...
Maybe Bamco finally learned something from ToV and ToG and will try to MAKE MONEY with ToX.
At first sight it seens like a promising game.
Finally some new RPG for the ps3 \o/
The surprising twist within ~Abyss still tops most of what I've played of any Tales of~ games and having played the beta version of ~Vesperia it still stands above all.

Great work on the Mocap within this teaser. Guess they've gotten a spot in-between squenix and capcom to do this...

The characters are somewhat forgettable sadly, but it is funny when I see the girl in action and I keep thinking she has a turnip on her head with that GREEN Sprout on top!
Abyss has a fantastic story, but the rest could have been assembled from a kit. Whilst normally well done (although frequently with insufferable adolescent protagonists), there are only so many times they can rehash exactly the same elements without the whole thing becoming rather farcical.
I dunno, I kinda prefer the lack of "deep" story.
It may seem a bit strange, but I'm tired of the typical RPG stories where the overall mood is dark or fantastical. WRPGs are too grimn'dark, and when they are comedic, it's despite themselves. (Because the game has embarrassing glitches or silly quests that have nothing to do with the main plot.) Square RPGs are serious; Xenogears was deep, but the character development is hackneyed and overdramatic, and you never feel personally connected to them.
Tales series games may not have the deepest plot, but like Wild Arms that's actually one of their selling points. A simple plot anyone can understand and likable characters, who are developed on a personal level rather than a dramatic one. Like most of the dialogue in the skits is totally irrelevant to the main plot but they went through the effort of writing them all out and you can watch them if you want or just ignore it in Abyss.
Chance of this coming to the US - 10%
Chance of this coming to Europe - 1%
@anon 10:23
I've played plenty of Tales games and they all have that 10 year old plot that Elc was talking about with a few different combat mechanics it's the same reason I hate Zelda games with a passion.
Also I'll bet that a year later Namco announces a "Perfect" 360 version for JPN only or some other nonsense.
The thrill is gone it's all gotten old IMO.
Now all we need is stockings and we will be all set.
All the female fanbase will snap it up like hotcakes!!!!
Darn, TNinja beat me to it...
@Taiga-sama It starts at 1:08 & ends right at 1:10 but yes, yes I certainly do see it...
I see bayonetta's infernal demon move on 1:10 ...
Oh, a martial artist. Awesome.
But really, the Tales series really love Sony, aye?
Or maybe they are... USING PS3 AS BETA THIS TIME! *Dun dun duuuuun*
Miyuki Sawashiro, I wonder if anyone else caught that :D
That was what I was thinkin too. I though i was the only one who thought that
I dare to ask the question...who's that?
OMG! SAEKO-SAMA FROM HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD! WIN! SOMEONE ELSE CAUGHT THAT TOO!!! ^^
SAEKO-SAMA! from Highschool of the Dead. Oh wow, I thought I was hearing things, I had no idea until I looked her up... she even played a role in Tales of Innocence too... and Carl from Blazblue. So amazed! ^^
Looks really cool. I just hope they will release this game in the west xD
No paid betas this time?
i wish it came out for the 360 too...
fuck it i give up i am just going to learn Japaneses that will solve all my problems -_-
Here is my question, I heard Namco has stopped overseas projects, does this mean that Tales of Xilla will be only sold in Japan from now on? Hm...
Yeah but it won't be american released so this news doesn't help me, it just makes me feel bad the fact that I'm to stupid to be able to read japanese.
Anyone can learn if they put in enough time and effort.
well, the real question here is : "Will it have an english version?"
The (sad) answer: "Probably not."
Did I just read UFOTABLE in there?!
They did the Tales of Symphonia OVA and certain Tales games anime FMV (iirc) so.. Yeah.
still waiting for the ending of ToS ova. its great.
