Japanese asked to rate their most loved game characters unsurprisingly deliver the top spot to an old favourite – but a beautiful virtual diva seems well on the way to unseating even this gaming titan.
The ranking, with the total number of votes for each:

This poll is like going to a Star Trek convention and asking people if they like Star Wars better than Star Trek. When you ask a bunch of otakus whether they prefer a cute anime girl over a plumber with American characteristics, odds are the anime girl is going to get close to, if not pass, the plumber. I'm amazed that Miku didn't make the #1 spot on this poll, considering that the odds were in her favor. This just shows that when otakus see something Miku related, they immediately want to get it/vote for it, which isn't exactly the case with Mario.

I wonder if Miku will replace Sonic as Sega's mascot.
Miku becoming Sega's mascot is an opportunity that Sega would be insane to pass up. They'd sell at least one copy of every game they produced from that point on to all the Miku fans for sure.
Plus: Miku > Sonic in every way
So they will replace a worldwide characters, with a huge fanbase all over the world; with fantastic games in his history, regardless of the actual quality of newer games, not counting Sonic Colors which is really good; for a character with limited appeal, popular with few individuals (as in limited groups) with 2(?) actual games that haven't come overseas. Sounds completely logical.
Mario must be crap too, doesn't matter that his game appeal is pretty much universal, great games that are critically acclaimed, most known theme in the video game industry and popular with all ages.
She's not as fast as Sonic

S.Mario Galaxy wasn't just gameplay...I mean, there was the way they did the small gravity fields per small planetoid, but what blew all of that away was the epic music. Definitely recommend you at least give it a try, HouseLife.
Mario RPG was the last one I truly give them credit for, but then Galaxy apparently is supposed to be quite good. I'm biased anyway, I'll forever choose plot and character over gameplay, since these days gameplay is basically a given. You don't HAVE a game without gameplay, so it's redundant for me personally.
Why only Mario ? Where's Luigi, Princess Peach and the Toad, and also Bowser ?

If you honestly say that FFVII has characters that would pass TOP 10, I don't know what to think.
I would have liked to of seen Link or even Zelda. I would also consider Nao from Mabinogi but that is Korean so I would not expect to of seen that on the list any way.

This isn't really a poll of the top 10 beloved characters of all time. It was more of a "best of 2010" piece. It was the top 10 characters (and they also did one of games) that had the most search engine hits/news pieces/etc between November 1st 2009 and October 31, 2010. So, any game that came out between those two dates in Japan were the focus of the results.
As much as I love Nintendo and Mario, my heart wants Miku to be at the top.
