“1 in 500 Japanese Women Have Appeared in Porn”

As many as 1 in 500 Japanese women have appeared in pornographic movies, it is claimed.
The claim, originally published in a Japanese magazine, is based on the observation that Japan publishes well over 10,000 adult videos annually, from which is derived a population of 100,000 or more women who have at one time performed. Some 9% of these are also thought to be casual rather than professional performers.
The former editor of a gravure rag, with experience of photographing over 400 women, is quoted in support of all this – “I get the impression women really like being photographed nude […] on the surface they may be embarrassed but I never saw one who didn’t like it.”
Accounts from actual performers are more mixed.
Korean media covering the story reports hopeful Koreans commenting that “Japanese culture is really messed up” and “if you ask 100 Japanese women for sex, 1 is bound to agree.” Of course, Koreans are in no position to criticise their neighbours, and in any case it appears a lot more than 1 would agree if asked nicely enough.
Since the group of women appearing in such films changes each year (especially with the maximum career length of a porn star being quite short), the “1 in 500” figure might actually understate matters significantly.
Add to this the widespread suspicion that a large number of Japanese women either work as prostitutes or engage in informal “enjo kousai” prostitution relationships in school, college or otherwise, and it would appear the doubts about the moral character of Japanese women often voiced in neighbouring countries (to say nothing of in Japan) are not entirely without merit.

I completely forgot about how desperate they are to get pregnant and have the next generation these days, so I wouldn't be surprised if all of this was some extensions of the Japanese collective unconscious nearly demanding of its culture that sex be inserted back into its lifestyle... no pun intended.
Reality does work that way, humans are instinctual just like all the rest of the animals, it just shows up in different societal ways considering our higher consciousness. I'm curious about how we'll evolve as a culture in the coming years in relation to the FACT that teenagers are sexual beings and in many cases MUST have sex as a right of passage.
In the past it was exploitation by older people (much less than people believe), now its a projection of their increasing maturity at a pace unseen before, with or without growth hormone.

It really helps that "American" porn can include girls from anywhere in the world - so there is a large population to draw from.
Japanese porn features Japanese women almost exclusively. So, the ratio really may be higher in Japan, even though the absolute numbers are definitely higher in the U.S.
More in absolute numbers? Perhaps. More in percentage is patently absurd.
America has 160 Million women (many are middle age or older) And I somehow doubt there's that much porn (yet).

Oh, make no doubt that I considered the population size differences, but based on data for internet porn as of 2006 (the latest year I have data for, though following a quite consistent trend), America produces 89% of all internet porn (by number of web pages), and averages to about 0.8 porn pages per man, woman, and child in the country, and I think that from this kind of data (note, more porn pages than women in the country by a factor of roughly 1.5), it is not unreasonable that there is a higher ratio here. That or our porn stars (professional and amateur) are SIGNIFICANTLY more prolific than Japanese porn stars.

It's an implied correlation based mostly on the facts that last I checked a) amateur porn in particular is easy to make and b) the difference in the number of web pages is ~244,000,000 (USA) to ~2,700,000 (Japan) and that I already mentioned the possibility of different degrees of prolificness, though that is unlikely to be the only factor given the difference in amounts.
Number of web pages is a very bad measure of the amount of porn produced, especially since
a) A lot of those web page have no actual content and just use hyperlinked pornographic images to send people on wild goose chases and get them to download viruses and,
b) The Japanese porn industry is a little more old-fashioned and still focuses heavily on feature-length films and DVDs as opposed to pay-sites, which have come to dominate the American industry over the last few years.
That is a reasonable consideration there, but doesn't point A conceivably apply to foreign webpages as well?
As for point B, that may be so, but can that be verified? Because I'm pretty sure we still have substantial "traditional" porn production (and still rising) here.
If it means anything (and if you have comparable stats for Japan), the USA released 13,588 hardcore pornography videos in 2005.
