The Nanoha movie is to the first Nanoha series what the 1984 Macross Movie was to the original Macross television series. It's a theatrical retelling on a better budget.
That said, the three series contain plenty of service as well.
Also, it should be noted that there is a lot more detail than you can make out in these not-nearly-full-resolution screencaps. Just sayin'.

is it possible to watch the movie version without watching the TV series?
Yes. The movie series is basically a remake of the original, but much more focused on the plot and has more detailed settings (some were in the manga and not shown in the TV series). So it is not necessary to watch the TV series before watching the movie.
With that said, if you seen series 1 prior to the movie 1, you'd probably have great attachment to the characters as it has more time for it to sink in to you, and would probably make watching the movie even more enjoyable.
