Japanese asked to rank the most memorable teachers of anime and manga have little difficulty in putting together a list of great teachers.

Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei’s eponymous Itoshiki-sensei came 12th, whilst K-ON!’s Sawako came only 14th and Azumanga Daioh’s Yukari languished in near total obscurity at 18th, seemingly suggesting that it takes an actual storyline and plot for a character to enjoy any long-term memorability or affection.

I am proud to say that I haven't watched/read any series in this list.
Sawako-sensei and Yukari-sensei atleast are in the top 20 but their both in my top 10. I'd add with Minamo-sensei also from Azumanga Daioh. Hot+fun+quirky is what I like over just hot.
Why are you forgetting about Kimura!? Kimura from Azumanga Daioh is the 2nd best teacher (GTO is the greatest of course).

With a trademark name like Great Teacher Onizuka this ranking was made for him.

YESS! Onizuka FTW! It's great that the list is based upon how good they teach as a teacher...not upon how sexy they look. (at least I think so...) Mizuho from Onegai sensei, anyone? I don't remember she taught many good lessons to the students and us viewers also...
Still, the only ones I've watched/read were GTO, Gokusen, Slam Dunk and Hell Teacher Nube...
The only one I'm allowed to not approve is Uchiyamada who's no. 10 he ain't the best teacher...
If you read the late parts of the manga, he kinda became an OK kinda teach. With a dorama-past
1st and 2nd ones have ties to gangs and the like yet they teach like true teachers should, they definitely deserve their spots.
Kudos to Nueno as well,An educator/exorcist with a demon hand is a must for the list.

My very first thought was Mizuho Kazami. But that's just because she is one of my favorite charters.

I agree moar GTO episodes; they have plenty of original material to work with so it's not far-fetched. If FMA got a second brand new series why not GTO?
