Japanese asked to rank the most memorable teachers of anime and manga have little difficulty in putting together a list of great teachers.
1. Eikichi Onizuka (GTO)
2. Kumiko Yamaguchi (Gokusen)
3. Machiko Mai (Miss Machiko)
4. Koichi Kawato (ROOKIES)
5. Mitsuyoshi Anzai (SLAM DUNK)
6. Midori Yoshinaga (Crayon Shin-chan)
7. Meisuke Nueno (Hell Teacher Nūbē)
8. Kenji Sakuragi (Dragon Zakura)
9. ♨ (Urusei Yatsura)
10. Hiroshi Uchiyamada (GTO)
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei’s eponymous Itoshiki-sensei came 12th, whilst K-ON!’s Sawako came only 14th and Azumanga Daioh’s Yukari languished in near total obscurity at 18th, seemingly suggesting that it takes an actual storyline and plot for a character to enjoy any long-term memorability or affection.
Mizuho Kazami? And where’s Sae Chabashira (from “Classroom of the elite”)?
As a professor, I’m glad Eikichi (my not-exactly-my role-model role model) is on top of the list, and Nueno-sensei and Kumiko-sensei are on it.
Sad, I can’t see Mizuho-sensei in the list–and Sawa-chan!
They forgot about the exhibicionist teacher of Airgear 😀
Hiroshi Uchiyamada? WHAT?
He represents the perverted teachers who lost their dreams.
There are times when I felt I want to kill that old geezer, but we can’t overlook the fact that he was really passionate in the beginning of his teaching career. There was a flashback in one of the manga chapters where he gave away his straight-man’s pride to perform mouth-to-mouth to a drowned kid. I know for sure that I’d hesitate to kiss another guy long enough for him to die before I could save him from asphixiation.
It’s a surprise to see Uchiyamada’s name up there, but alas, it’s relevant, and shows how(unusually) much integrity this poll has, lol.
