My Little Sister Can’t Be Getting Her Own Mecha Anime!?

The 8th episode of Ore no Imouto was a somewhat abrupt change from the pace of some of the previous episodes, but as it nonetheless continues more of the antics of some of the season’s favorite characters.
The lovely poster for Kirino’s manga, 姉妹市 / Shimaishi (Sisters’ City) is illustrated by a talented young artist with the quixotic name BUNBUN (personal website here), who is also responsible for episode 01’s ED illustration.
Talent for the 2D arts must run strong in his bloodline incidentally – BUNBUN’s elder sister (by two years) happens to be 堀口悠紀子 / Yukiko Horiguchi, Kyoto Animation’s pre-eminent illustrator and largely in charge of all of KyoAni art production going back as far as Haruhi in 2006.
The top-left of the poster is a fun joke to be explained shortly.
This week’s revolving OP changes gave some good material:
Kirino looks adorable!
Kirino’s business associate has a great anime name – フェイト / Fate.
The “Justion” mecha seen throughout the episode is definitely of the “Super Robot” breed (Tetsujin, Manzinger Z), as opposed to the more typical “Real Robot” (most anything Gundam or Macross).
The Justion anime plays in the background of this meido kissa.
And one of the maids themselves in the back – it must be a mecha-anime themed café.
Since she has a fair amount of screentime this episode, Ruri gets a few especially good close-ups, like the one above.
Note the mecha kits in the glass displays, too.
Kirino’s meeting with the anime producers goes as you’d expect in any fictional narrative:
It might be hoped that the real-life producers of our anime aren’t quite as satanic looking!
Kyosuke’s seiyuu Yuuichi Nakamura is still giving an excellent performance as always, although it might be hard to remember it’s “Kyosuke” speaking, and not Tomoya or Alto.
This lovely shot of Kirino is probably the best overall from the episode.
(The shot above is flipped 180° for a better look)
The shot of Kirino’s Shimaishi is just what the real things typically look like, besides that the wraparound mini dustcover is usually seen on light novels more infrequently than on manga. The publisher’s name is a fun pun however…
Kadokawa’s 電撃文庫 / Dengeki Bunpo, the major label that happens to be the Ore no Imouto novel series’ actual publisher is spelled with the kanji 電撃 / Dengeki (Electric Shock) separated from the kanji for the extremely similar 雷撃 / Raigeki (Lightning Strike) with just a tiny squiggle in the ‘Den” kanji.
Copyrights are not an issue here, so it is likely someone is amusing themselves behind all this.
This adaptation plan for the anime version of Shimaishi outlines some of the changes: changing the lead to a male character, increasing the number of action scenes, and naming the newly masculine lead Satoru…
Perhaps the satanic bunch were terribly confused and were thinking of a different light novel?
Hopefully buxom (according to the manga’s art, at least) Saori might get more screentime in the remaining episodes.
The show’s habit of running credits over the closing moments of several episodes adds a classy touch, but it does also result in many scenes being marred by a text scrawl.
The cruel sofa prevents a panchira for Kirino’s bounce here, sadly.
This week’s ED illustration is indeed a different style than the past artwork used by the show, but still great in its own chibi-ish way:
The art comes from yet another gifted artist with a noble name, CHANxCO (personal website here).

This episode at least shows anime production staff have a sense of humour about themselves...
Kuroneko is great, as usual.
Let's see...favorite parts were her speech and last scene?
Also continue these reviews Quen, Your writing style is always a blast to read.
Final note who thinks the Angle button found on every DVD player and Bluray player get turned into Anime's next marketing scheme?
Thank you. ^^
I actually neglected to mention much anything about her speech, didn't I?
Pah! Don't worry about it!
Just consider us in the comment section...liner notes, heh.
It was a pretty good episode...Not bad :3
This anime just keeps getting better and better..
I have to agree it was a really good episode. Kyosuke however is starting to piss me off for the reasons Kuroneko gave in the episode.
As a brother, Kyosuke's cool and all but he needs to learn not to jump into things for his sister even if he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing.
I facepalmed when he grovelled.
Kuroneko was pretty cute this episode tho.
The first half was good, the second part was utter shit mainly because of him.
the ending should be quite spectacular at this rate!
Indeed....lol
i didn't buy it. he does all these things to help his sister, standing up for her more than we've ever seen a brother stand up for a sister in an anime, and yet the episode closes on the revelation that he "hates" her?
forced.
He's a siscon in denial
I'mma just rewatch his going against his dad moment, cos' that scene was fucking awesome.
Agreed - This seemed like a pretty drastic character shift, compared to prior episodes. I haven't read the novels, but I was under the impression that Kyousuke was the competent, reliable type, and that he would have done his research and made his own arguments in Kirino's favor. Instead, he stands around gobsmacked for most of his screentime, like he's some generic, wishy-washy male lead from some other show, then begs on his hands and knees when he actually DOES participate in the discussion. I call shenanigans.
I agree. I like Ruri more than every other character short of Kirino. I was hoping the Anime was going to be more about just those two.
Ruri reminds me of "Daria" and Kirino is a Japanese version of 'Quinn'. What happened to the "fan service"?
A Kuroneko is fine too...
gantzime and anime: two different worlds
I thought the name Fate combined with Setsuna came from Setsuna F seiei from Gundam 00. That alone, even if it was wrong, made it pretty cool.
i lmao when i heard that name
i was like fate...lol
setsuna....wtf?
'fate setsuna' LOL
hey this anime is good and anyone else knows any anime that is good too that is out now? or recently
Kirino cute as ever, gotta love the OP song.
i came for the mecha and i stayed for the disappointment T_T
Kuroneko episode yum
was it just my imagination or did Kuroneko got kinda wetty eyes for Kyosuke doing too much for his sister (jealousy ?)
No it wasn't good Anon...I saw it too.
Indeed
That maid cafe is actually the Gundam Cafe (located in under the Akihabara train station) interior!
^ this anon got down voted but his piece of info is true
This is not a maid kissa, this is the Gundam Café. Hence the screen showing mecha anime
I didn't mention the Gundam Café, but I have always regarded it as another form of meido kissa...
Yea the anon is right. Even the location it's at is correct. Shown at the beginning, it's in front of a little roundabout in front of the station. It's exactly the same location as Gundam Cafe.
The previous episode showed Mister Donuts, which is also located at Akiba next to SoftMap DVD/Games store.
All the interiors and exteriors match. Why did the anon get down voted?
Maybe someone was jealous that he/she noticed.
Fall's best anime, end of story.
Dammit Quen I just love your articles, especially the episode review ones. Always so fun and informative~
Thank you.
Kyosuke really deserves "Brother of the year" award. Its kinda a shame that he did so much for Kirino, yet she did little to nothing in return.
As long as Kuroneko will be his reward, I agree.
needs more yuri
Quite satisfied with this episode. It's a shame the name of the anime likely scares off a lot of people who would normally completely block out fetish stuff like siscon (like me, who only started watching it due to the ravings on this site). The characters, their interactions, and the animation are all top quality.
Well said, Considering the focus of Kirino, the show does have a great flow to it. The characters actually seem like they're interacting, rather than just reading lines.
Kuroneko's speech towards the end showed that...lol, she sounded really pissed off.
satanic producers are now my favourite characters.
Quen ~
Once again Sir, you have prevailed in keeping the standards for an article of extreme interest, THANK YOU!
The episode (for me) is a good one and I look forward to seeing what awaits ahead. - (as I have not read the Manga)
Nonetheless, this animu just keeps getting better and better and the characters are becoming more endearing with each appearance.
What I do enjoy is seeing Kirino and Ruri confront each other, in charming dialogue, and defending their interests.
EXCELLENT!
Thanks Shi, I enjoy writing these overlong recap posts.
I incidentally got the manga plus the light novels while I was rummaging through Akiba several months ago - I'm especially a fan of the manga version's eclectic artwork.
My favorite scene:
on the train where ruri is jealous of kirino for kyosuke's dedication to his sister
The producers wanting to change Kirino's story for the anime... isn't it ironic that the very same thing was done to the adaptation of this chapter from the Ore no Imouto novel?
Its obvious irony :D
My Little sister can't be this Ironic.
Claris knows whats up.
that's not the best scene
no kuroneko train scene?
