William Gibson, father of cyberpunk, seems not have been immune to the wiles of the world’s foremost holographic princess after all – he concedes he must study her further.
Gibson tweets thus:
Hatsune Miku is clearly a more complex phenomenon than I initially assumed. Requires further study.
Just what prompted this change of heart can only be guessed at, but it is difficult to deny Miku’s status as the totem for an emergent community of creators and fans places her on a quite different footing to the mere CG marketing avatars other virtual idols constitute.
For those so inclined, William Gibson maintains a Twitter account under the handle of “GreatDismal,” and there is always Sankaku Complex’s Twitter account for those not.
lol guess that’s what happens when you mess with Miku fans.
William Gibson said:
GreatDismal – Is there a subcultural relationship between Miku and the guys who marry pillows?

Hatsune Miku is the perfect combination of every parameters of the “Sankaku complex”
He’s just trolling to attract attention.
Next tweet will probably go along the lines of “Miku Dakimakura requires further physical contact”
How many of you actually read his books ?
I have no doubt he is saying what he is because of the backlash he may have received. But I highly doubt it was out of fear or something like that.
Gibson no doubt read what everyone had to say about Miku, and picked up on some new points and trends about Miku. Gibson is NOT an otaku. Just because he is arguably the greatest cyberpunk writer of all time does not mean he is going to know everything about the Miku culture. I think it would be quite natural for a man with standards as high as his, to reevaluate something given new insight.
maybe the reality is never good enough for a sci-fi author. The res is never high enough, there’s always too much anime, and no AI onboard – that can’t be an idol, right?
true. true. i doubt he’s losing any sleep over this.
