William Gibson Not Impressed by Hatsune Miku

cyber-miku-by-hima.jpg

William Gibson, the author who kick-started the cyberpunk genre and popularised the notion of a virtual idol, is singularly unimpressed by Hatsune Miku it seems.

What Gibson’s twittering about her “rez” is all about is less than clear, but that he is not enamoured by her is clear enough:

Hatsune Miku doesn’t really rock me. I want higher rez, less anime.

[…]

So Hatsune Miku involves some sort of ongoing crowd-sourced evolution?

His followers also seem less than enthused by the world’s leading virtual idol:

From what I understand she will change as the trends change, the idea being an idoru that can never fall out of favor.

[…]

Yeah, most of her songs are developed by fans, refined by the people at Crypton and then synched to her visuals.

[…]

Think of her as a piano with a personality and a publisher – you get enough composers and some rise to the top.

Fortunately, the world’s media now seems to agree Miku is actually a hologram and not a virtual idol after all…

Japanese observers continued a discrete parallel conversation about his comments in Japanese, wondering just what the hell he was on about:

The great SF writer William Gibson has mentioned Hatsune Miku!

He seems pretty past it. We should explain to him about Miku at an SF con if we get the chance.

By “rez” he means “high rez,” right? He wants her in realistic 3D, not anime style? I’m sure Sega can help with that.

I suppose it would be a bit weird if Gibson praised her; though actually, when I met Crypton’s CEO in San Francisco he was wearing a Neuromancer T-shirt…

Well, it’s less about Miku herself and more about the spontaneous formation of a community of creators and fans around her image.

Also we have to do something about this idea that Miku is a holographic virtual idol which is spreading overseas. I think that coloured Gibson’s comments about her there.

“Doesn’t rock me” – I think we can safely translate that as “みくみくにされなかった”

Hiroyuki Itoh, Crypton’s CEO, chimes in:

So William Gibson tweeted about Hatsune Miku. I read Neuromancer 20 years ago!

When I think about it, it all seemed more futuristic back then. Now the real future is here, we have to be conscious of it. The feeling that the future’s not really living up to the hype kinda sucks.

She's just a tool. An instrument. Why so serious?

EDIT: So I get voted down for taking Miku as it really is intended: a musical instrument software that's supposed to mimic human voice singing?

@jamesownsall Just a tool? Guess you're gonna have the same fate as Lamberto: have a leek up yo' ass for disrespecting Hatsune Miku!

As for Mr. Gibson, I hope his tweets were all done by a hacker. It would be a shame if he's gonna ruin his famed image by these tweets.

I think I'm defending 'her' when I said that. What Gibson meant by 'rez' anyway? I hope he's not another one of those elitist wannabe outcasts.

Not that many of the mainstream popular acts are any better(Black Eyed Peas)...

I hope all that illustrations and doujins didn't cloud people's minds from what Miku Hatsune really is.

I'm gonna take a risk here.

What he means is that Miku is not a true 'virtual idol' its more or an anime character not to similiar to the Gorillaz group.

It would be more impressive if Miku persay wasn't an anime character but a real person as like the cosplayers, not what she looks like now. Even watching the concert seems more akin to an anime concert than a real one.

Final Line, Miku looks more like an anime show than a real concert that's what hes getting at. If it was a real person he wouldn't complain not an anime character for christ's sake

I'm guessing that the "Rez" he's referring to is the Rez Toei in his Gibson's book, "Idoru"

Perhaps he seeks something more with the traits of something almost human-like and part machine? That's pretty much what the "Rez" character is in his book.

Interesting take on that - I was just thinking it was more meant as make Miku more realistic/human as we've seen in other CG characters.

He acknowledges what I think this the main point of Miku's being - that she is evolved/evolving from "ongoing crowd-source". Makes her more *real* than some packaged contrived virtual idol.

But Miku sings what you want and how you want. Pop? Trance? Func? Rock? METAL? Sure, whatever.

I agree comepletely. I think it's great that fans can contribute music - but the fact is her virtual voice is no where near real sounding to a real idol. Her voice sounds like a poor synthesizer. The fact they want to make an English one will likely sound worse if it's this "hollow" sounding with Japanese. At least Japanese is syllables, English has like 6 different sounds for the letter "A" (ie; 'a'nd, c'a'll, b'a't, etc.).

High rez? Is it really that hard to guess? Is her 3D hologram model *THAT* impressive to you all? People have done better. I think he's main beef was looking as fake as she is.

Again, credit to her, she's made fans of the industry happy, because now *they* generate music... at the cost of a realistic sounding voice.

The technology advances and the voices produced by it keep getting better. Considering this I guess the new english voice will be just as good if not better than the japanese original. Maybe the original voice will receive an update as well.

eh did you hear any append songs? it can sound very realistic. her original voice is kinda old, of course it sounds 'worse'.

also, why assume realistic=superior? i don't know about you, but i like my vocaloids sounding as inhuman as possible. if i wanted realistic voices i'd listen to real humans; what i want is original voices that stand out.

No. His opinion is perfectly valid as it implicitly states his preference. It doesn't need to be "informative". He's not even bashing your beloved Miku.

I disagree - the change in tones she makes sound waaaay to fake. She's not as sonorant as real singers. I don't understand her appeal for that reason, other than her absolute flexibility.

^ You both miss my point. Of course Vocaloids still sound synthetic, but their appeal lies elsewhere. A plethora of high-quality professional-level music written for them from within the fandom, plus and community driven development of their characters combined with great artwork make for a synergistic listening experience that simply cannot be had with traditionally produced music.

If you don't like the sound of their voices, you can always listen to the myriads of covers by real singers that get made for most songs.

That example I linked was solely for illustrating that Vocaloid is bleeding-edge technology in the field of singing synthesizers. If you only look at the technological aspect, there's nothing that comes even close. No sci-fi author has the right to criticize that just because its not up to par with the science-fiction he dreamed up. He was also ignorant about the fact that the actual technology Miku personifies has nothing to do with any "holograms" rendered at some concert.

'Her' primary use is still, just a programmable human voice mimic. The anthropomorphism into 'Miku' was primarily a publicity stunt.

And I treat the whole thing as just that:a tool. Sure it's kinda limited with today's technology, but it's apparent that some of the best composer-hobbyists out there had put her to good use. That much I acknowledge.

I think both 'her' obsessed segment of fans and Gibson himself think too much. Gibson talks as if he hates piano for being a piano, and the obsessed fans act as if they're stroking their dicks on the piano and came 5 times a day.

Miku the character was indeed a publicity stunt, but is a part of Miku the phenomenon, don't forget that. you can't just pretend it doesn't exist. and you can't really pretend people don't treat her as an idol, because they do. and what make idols idols? people.

Sorry. Miku IS an idol. She, unlike almost any real life idol is so multifaceted it's scary. There's the program for users to freely create songs, her presence in online video sites like youtube and niconico that lets people show off some amazing Miku music videos, she has a dedicated team of music composers and song writers doing her unique songs, she can probably do some kind of virtual concert online at any moment's notice, she can even do a real life concert.

Getting all twisted over her actual programming and the sheer talent it takes to support her is ridiculous IMO. She doesn't really need some singular AI programming or make her own songs.

Miku is perfectly fine as an idol with the technology we have. William Gibson being snarky about her just sounds backwards to me. Also, there's the typical, downright prejudiced answer of "less anime." That is as far from an objective viewpoint ever. That silly 'less anime' mantra has no basis on anything except for anime-phobes who are usually too scared to delve into why people may like it. Kinda reminds me of Ore no Imouto and how some people just seems ALLERGIC to anime culture.
