Aya Hirano is accusing her agency of high-handedly changing the entire direction of her career without ever bothering to consult her, and she voices her disgust at them for the chaos they inflicted upon her fans.
As ever, the latest diatribe is delivered by way of a series of tweets:
I even wrote this in my Yomiuri column, but with the changes at my agency there’s not a single member of staff in my current team who had anything to do with my past music or even knew about my anime roles. That’s my biggest worry. Everything I’ve done up to now is being negated.
[…]
The sudden change in my career direction was forced on me against my will. “Forget everything you’ve done up until now and start from scratch!” I really have to wonder just what my 5 years of work as a seiyuu were in aid of.
[…]
What I hate the most is the upset this caused to my fans. Why they suddenly thrust this upon them with no followup, why they never said what direction they wanted me to go in, it’s an insult to my fans I can’t forgive.
At this stage the response is less than supportive:
Stop making excuses!
You’re the one who went along with it all!
There’s no way her agency told her to make herself into a celebrity slut character…
Her lifeliners are such idiots they’ll probably buy this.
Sounds like she’s quitting her agency.
Blaming everything on your staff now? Bull.
Rubbish excuse. She’s just pouring oil on the fire now.
All this despite the fact it she was the one who actually said that stuff on TV, not her agency.
Now she’s even making enemies of her agency…
If you want to be a seiyuu just change agency!
She’s just desperate to reconstitute her lifeline.
She must be at an impasse in the talent world. The lack of demand is starting to bite…
Otaku are… My illness is… My agency are…
Please don’t go back to being a seiyuu. Stay a talent on stupid variety shows forever.
So she is an angel after all! That damn agency…

My agency cannot be this bad..
"Stop making excuses!" - can't say better. Want anybody to blame for *your* actions - blame yourself.
Hm. Personally, I would like to take her story as a "posibilitiy", but not as hard fact.
Rather than negating everything. Who knows. The world is always surprising.
I agree with TNinja, it would be best to give her the benefit of the doubt at this time. Who knows, she might be telling the truth...doubt it tho....>_>
You always have a choice whether to do something or not, and most people have brains to analyse the consequences.
If she doesn't want to suffer any legal consequences of disobeying her company(assuming the career change WASN'T her idea), she has no real choice.
I have reason to doubt this, though. You'd think her company doesn't include some kind of gag order in it(non-disclosure agreement)?
What all this comes down to, still, is that this tweet is not gonna help her in anyway. Most people are already considering that she is just trying to lift the blame away from herself. Some others who were still her fans until this point even turned their backs.
Unfortunate for Aya Hirano that ED isn't available in Japanese...
Maybe she got no brain, no wonder shes looking stupid on her pictures all the time. ^^
You wont let agencies decide everything you are going to do, except you are really stupid.
Also she could always sue them if they do something behind her back.
But she starts telling this story now after how many months? If it was really her agency's doing and she didnt like it, she could have told her fans and got rid of this agency much earlier.
Its not really believable now.
Japanese agencies tend to have oppressive contracts. If they tell her to do something she has to - or pay huge amounts of contractual penalty.
She can't just get rid of the agency either, for the same reason.
It sounds fishy, but it is possible.
I doubt they did all that without her knowing. How the fuck would she go to all those variety shows then?
Perhaps she didn't read the fine print before signing it. That, or she was willing to accept every terms and conditions written in the contract at the time, thinking, "Eh... what can be so bad about this?".
Those who are still living under their parents' allowances might find it difficult to comprehend the workings of a contract and how much it can act as an invisible cuffs on your neck. Then again, assuming Hirano's career change was really something she didn't want but was initiated by the fools in her agency, she still carries some blame for not exercizing her rights before signing anything.
"There’s no way her agency told her to make herself into a celebrity slut character…"
2ch has a point here, I can't see an agency taking the risk of telling someone to do a complete career change.
I kind of suspected it was an agency thing. I've been pretty neutral on this issue because, while I do enjoy her Seiyuu work, I never really had much of an opinion of her as a person.
So... I think her drop in popularity left her with so small amount of fans that it was not enought to live on. So now she want to get some of her old fans back by blaming her agency.
Agency forcing her to change direction or not, I have to agree with all the responses to her tweets.
When you look for ugly & stupid; you can always keep in mind aya hirano ñ_ñ
Yay I feel like making another wildly unpopular defensive comment. now!
LEAVE AYA ALONE, better yet, encourage her to return to being seiyuu.
I tough we loved her as Haruhi and Konata, don't you want her back? Who cares if she makes dumb decisions? Her personal life is no matter to me.
On the other hand I wish people well by default, plus, I think Aya is psychologically unstable, I'd hate for her to hurt herself, if blaming her agency is enough to let her cope with the mess that has become her career so be it.
LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE! Wait...
Hmm... it seems to me that Aya isn't that strong-minded. The brain tumor could partially be related if that story is to be believed. She is a young woman who came into this business and probably was told that she could be more while she was in a massive popularity rise. That could give her a strange sense of perspective, and it seems this agency's decisions were based on their M.O. rather than in any consideration for what she is.
What everyone appears to be angry at is how she seemed to lack the understanding of what she was doing, be it forced or not after the fact, she made a reasonable choice to seek more, but it's very possible with the way agencies are she had no idea how this was going to play out. Mot humans will go along with something in hopes of it getting better, but sooner or later if nothing changes, this type of thing can happen. And considering her bikini upside-down incident, among a few others, she may even be on a short leash with Twitter being one of her only outlets.
Either way, the thing she must fess up to now to stem the bleeding is that if she made a decision she now regrets, to admit it and do what she wants to in her heart. I won't blame her for making a mistake, I will only blame her if she doesn't learn from it.
Of course its her agency...but complete BS that she didn't know about it or whatever.... This was the fall back plan if the changes didn't quite work. We're all being played.
It sounds like an excuse, but I will give Aya the benefit of the doubt...
From what I learned in reading a sh*t-load of Hentai mangas involving agencies and contracts, it's a win-lose situation on the idol's part...
Hell, from singer to cum-dump...Or worse...
Like IdolM@ster on nightmare fuel...
But that's a story for another time, since this is about Aya's future...
And as Schrobby said, the agencies hold the cards in the relationship, so her story could be a fair possibility...
It's basically like 'legal black-mailing' but much more, well...Legal~
I hope she pulls through with these couple of years...
What's sad yet funny is I will freely admit with a smile that I'm shallow enough to forgive her if she were to come back and voice another season of Haruhi :D
@HouseLife
How I truly wish for some sort of anime continuity to Lucky Star...
Maybe an OVA at least with her voicing Konata again and saying the darndest things...
*sighs*
"Timote, timote, tomote!"
I remember that bathroom segment of Lucky Star with Konata saying that...
Agreed. It seems Moe is the negative buzz word that has overtaken something just being fun for the sake of it being fun. The one thing about Lucky Star, and most animes designated as 'Moe' these days, is they make such powerful characters and then they never really let them grow. K-on! at least had a plot and character growth that was noticable. The 4-koma when they get animated just seem to gain another level of depth that makes you WANT it to become more.
If there's one thing that's definitely true, Aya Hirano definitely had the skill for being a Seiyuu, now we just need to hope she regains the means.
i really doubt anyone truly liked haruhi or konata based on how aya's personal life was like. not to mention on her tv show she was a complete 180 of now. she could go back and it seems like she wants to. just don't be bitches about it.
@Anonymous above me
It's not about Aya's life and whether or not anyone liked the shows based on it...
It's about how she gave those characters the charming personalities that we've known and loved...
These slew of news about Aya's life for the past 2 years and all the 'put downs' and jeering that came after those shows were done, alongside with all the negativity and hatred that eventually became of it from her 'fans' and whatnot...
I hope she does go back to being a seiyuu (and hopefully we'll get more sequels to LS and MoHS as well as other anime shows) and be there to give the characters the charm and personality we love~
Sounds like Aya needs a hug. I'd give her one, but flying to Japan and tracking her down sounds expensive...and creepy
Considering your avatar, Ghost Dog... creepy's working well for you :D
HouseLife, Normally, I would come up with some clever rebuttal about the appearance of your avatar, but as a Half Life and Hugh Laurie fan, I find it impossible on this occasion.
She was just saying how she was used to people hating her, now she's QQing about it. But I'm not gonna lie; I love her voice acting. She should go back to being a seiyuu and quit this nonsense regardless of the circumstances.
If she had said this when she announced she would retire as a seyuu, like "I will give up being a seyuu, but it's because my agency says so"
surely her fans would had put so much pressure that this would never happened. But, maybe she has just choose to accept it all and so its her own fault that this all happened.
she is just not being honest...
Well, it's hard to tell if this is true or not, but we know the agencies in Japan practically own their idols and seiyuu, so it wouldn't really surprise me.
So then it's really some creepy dude in a suit who hates thick condoms.
I agree with Schrobby, its very different from their perspective as compared to ours. Well even if she's lying on purpose, I don't really care. All I care about is I think she is quite a competent seiyuu or I like her voice. Couldn't care less about what she does really.
Whether it's true or not, whether she was forced to or of her own will, all I can say is she's responsible for it no matter what the true cause is.She could have just left the agency and move to a better one which ain't run by autocrats.
Sorry, you reap what you sow.
Agreed, since when did the most popular thing about an seiyuu become what they don't do as a seiyuu? Doesn't make sense...
Then again, they kinda bring this on themselves by aspiring to greater fame. I suppose with the way media is set up right now, it's unavoidable if you wanna go any higher than seiyuu. Happens in the big HW and it's going to happen here, too...
That agreed I did was @Anon 1:19, not Krazed.
Schrobby, you've done it again! lol
This is expected from Schrobby.
Heh. ^_^
She can't go against her agents - especially in Japan. So if she's telling the truth, then she really couldn't have done anything.
It is kind of weird she is even able to say this, though, considering they are so oppressive.
Aya just might not care anymore. It sure would explain why she talks now.
This reminds me of Perfect Blue; it's easy to say she's got a choice and can just flip of her company but that's the naive thinking reality is nice and fair.
"It is kind of weird she is even able to say this, though, considering they are so oppressive."
She might be seeking to get fired, you know. So they have to pay her off.
@yaku
lol, I was thinking of perfect blue too. Like maybe these tweets aren't aya, but rather some creepy lifeliner. As he reads them out loud to himself you hear aya's idol voice being overlayed his lip syncing. And, as we know how that sorry ends. This along with her public announcement of enjoying the company of old men, and hating thick condoms will all lead her to becoming a big star.
Fuck yourself and die! WTF you know loser shit!
She chose her own life, and this time she made enemies of her own agency... not a good move, Aya-chan :( [ I really hope she'll be back as a professional seiyuu ]
I could care less about the excuses really, but if it gets her back where she belongs (seiyuu), I'll pretend to believe it.
New anime about a seiyuu-turned-B-class-celebrity and her agency:
Ore no Agency ga konnani warui wake ga nai!
It doesn't matter who's the fault. The damage has been done. Now it will be hard to fix it...
get over it dude :)
But I don't care, I'm not a fan of her and never was...
I was just overtasting the obvious.
Solution:
Get back your old staff, dogeza before KyoAni to start up Lucky Star S2 and pray for a miracle ^^
Konata ftw! =ω=
No love for Haruhi?
I sure wouldn't say no to another season of Haruhi, as long as each episode has a different story and not just different clothes.
doubleplus to that.
they messed up you career? simple: don't let them, next time. they obviously won't be able to fix it for you, so dump them and fix it yourself while you still have the chance.
