There are suspicions that Microsoft is trying to purge the Xbox 360 of creepy groping sims, one of its mainstays in Japan, in order to promote the system as a family-friendly platform together with Kinect.
The developers of “Gal Gun,” a bishoujo shooting game (literally) for the Xbox 360, report having had their development schedule thrown into chaos after Microsoft insisted on sweeping changes to game, apparently banning them from showing any pantsu.
Explaining that they are engaged in frantic negotiations and modifications to try to appease Microsoft, their staff complain freely that “I don’t know if they’re trying to target families now, but don’t start saying that stuff at this late stage!”

Sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan have always been miserable, and the console is mainly regarded as “otaku hardware” for its fine selection of hostess/idol groping simulators (the most important of which, coincidentally, has recently incited a fan rebellion by trying to appeal to female gamers at the expense of existing fans), “shooting” games (which Microsoft has lately been discouraging) and western games (which tend to appeal only to a niche audience of hardcore gamers in Japan).
Why Microsoft would think it can suddenly reverse that image at this late stage, causing a possible backlash amongst its core customers at the same time if their supply of bishoujo games dries up, is something of a mystery – though the launch of Kinect and a sudden pressing need to target “casuals” seems to have much to do with this.

I don't remember the manufacturers of DVD players banning horror movies to make DVD's look "family friendly". You just put it in different sections. The gaming industry has come a long way in becoming socially accepted of late, but I sincerely hope nonsense like this is just another phase to grow out of and not a precedent for the future.

Trying to pull off the family friendly tactics in Japan, in addition to the space requirements of the Kinect, will really hurt sales.
Plus, apparently, Microsoft is charging more than double what the kinect actually costs to make. Buying it at $150 dollars is an extreme rip off.

I have two nice ideas for you. All forms of censoring should be banned. All copyrights should expire after some years.
Actually the second one is involved in it. Basically if a group owns the rights to something and does not distrubiute that item for lets say 10 years nah make that 5 it's cool to download. as for the banning censorship that ones tricky. All copyrights do expire after some years, the problem is it's a ridiculously long time, as in the life of the author plus at least 50 years, depending on country. Also, the USA is now extending indefinitely copyright for things like Mickey Mouse.
Copyright law was originally designed to encourage innovation, but now it serves the exact opposite purpose...

Does anyone know when this region encoding bullshit started? I know the ps3's and psp's don't have them. I had to do a hell of a lot of shit on my ps1 with all the disc swapping to play import/burned games I was to lazy and just had money to burn so I bought a japanese ps2. So did it happen anytime before that?
Most consoles have it. Xbox, 360, PS2 and PS3 have region code. PS3 only uses it for video playback right now, but that could change.
