There are suspicions that Microsoft is trying to purge the Xbox 360 of creepy groping sims, one of its mainstays in Japan, in order to promote the system as a family-friendly platform together with Kinect.
The developers of “Gal Gun,” a bishoujo shooting game (literally) for the Xbox 360, report having had their development schedule thrown into chaos after Microsoft insisted on sweeping changes to game, apparently banning them from showing any pantsu.
Explaining that they are engaged in frantic negotiations and modifications to try to appease Microsoft, their staff complain freely that “I don’t know if they’re trying to target families now, but don’t start saying that stuff at this late stage!”
The game in question (replete with panchira and tentacle scenes):
Sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan have always been miserable, and the console is mainly regarded as “otaku hardware” for its fine selection of hostess/idol groping simulators (the most important of which, coincidentally, has recently incited a fan rebellion by trying to appeal to female gamers at the expense of existing fans), “shooting” games (which Microsoft has lately been discouraging) and western games (which tend to appeal only to a niche audience of hardcore gamers in Japan).
Why Microsoft would think it can suddenly reverse that image at this late stage, causing a possible backlash amongst its core customers at the same time if their supply of bishoujo games dries up, is something of a mystery – though the launch of Kinect and a sudden pressing need to target “casuals” seems to have much to do with this.

Now that I think about it, if ecchi games are banned from all consoles they have to go and use PC. I certainly like that thought.

What interests me is how short the memories of these companies are. Anyone old enough to remember VHS-vs-Betamax? VHS won because Sony (yes, THAT Sony) refused to allow porn on Betamax. By Microsoft banning pantsu, they are saying the same thing Sony is right now on the PS3 (no porn) and is giving away their only advantage.
The game is not even going to be released Stateside anyway so I really do not get their shtick. With the Wii and DS dominating Japanese family friendly environments, they really don't have a chance in hell of breaking into any family friendly stuff especially since whatever they turn out for that is going to be shovelware.
The one major gripe I have is primarily superficial. If the Xbox360 goes down, Keima (The World God Only Knows) would have 1 less machine in capturing god mode.
This is one of the reason why people MOD their consoles.
They just lack the balls to go through with it.

I have an idea. The studio could fight back by changing their game's premise. It shouldn't be too hard, just change the graphics a little bit and change the text explaning the story.
The new story will be about intergalactic aliens who look like little girls attempting to invade the world. The protagonist, armed with a chainsaw-rocket launcher, has to kill them in his school with his chainsaw-rockets.
When you launch your chainsaw-rockets, it'll saw and split the aliens in half, releasing huge bucketloads of blood and gore and innards.
That game will definitely be in line with their family-friendly marketing plan.
It may not be family-friendly to any sane person, but it certainly seems so to them so why not just give them what they want.
well, i for one don't see where this game is not family friendly. it's free of violence (except for the comical variety), it promotes healthy love relationships, and if they added a few male targets and the possibility to play a female protagonist, it could even help against development of homophobia.
i certainly wouldn't mind my kids and/or wife playing it.

This game looks dumb as hell.
Everyone here knows that XBOX360 was doomed from the start in Japan. Lets not even begin that discussion on this thread. Heres the facts... PS3 considered god in Japan/Asia and XBOX360 considered god in the US/west.
As far as I know it, XBOX360 can probably live off the US/west and be very profitable. PS3.... not so much. People still flock to the XBOX360 for the hardcore games.
I understand all this family friendly bullshit. I mean hell, Gears of War, left 4 dead and other games that are opposite of family friendly. I didn't know there were family friendly games on the XBOX.

Trying to pull off the family friendly tactics in Japan, in addition to the space requirements of the Kinect, will really hurt sales.
Plus, apparently, Microsoft is charging more than double what the kinect actually costs to make. Buying it at $150 dollars is an extreme rip off.
