Anime watchers asked which eighties giant robot anime they’d most like to see remade give a set of response sure to prompt nostalgia and bemusement in equal measure.
The ranking (franchises like Gundam and Macross are still actively being made and so do not feature):
1. Patlabor
2. Armored Trooper Votoms
3. Aura Battler Dunbine
4. Space Runaway Ideon
5. Mashin Hero Wataru
6. Six God Combination Godmars
7. Super Robot Life Form Transformer (Transformers)
8. God Mazinger
9. Fang of the Sun Dougram
10. Ginga Hyōryū Vifam
Hopefully a list Hollywood never catches wind of.

Not really a surprise there.
This "Platabor" one is everywhere since I started watching chinese cartoons, I promissed myself I'd watch it someday, but this 80's style keep giving me the feeling of the lack of something.
Yea i would like to know it too, i have the same problem ,_,
I just can watch 80's cartoons or animes which i hsve seen myself, and that werent many because it was the beginning time when i really watched it.
Patlabor is boooring. Don't bother watching it.
Yes, I am trolling...maybe.
In the whole Patlabor franchise only the movies are good. Despite seeing them whole, I think that the series are overly long, and lack any serious plot whatsoever.
Patlabor's charm is its excessive realism. The series is, rather than an entertainment work, a classic documentary on the possible integration of mecha in japanese society.
It's definitely boring if you expect to be entertained, but highly engrossing if you look at it as speculation of a very realistic future, as it anticipates many of the problematics we may one day face.
Patlabor is pure genius. Ideon is really great, too.
Ideon mass kill?
Tomino say the "hope" ending was not in the original plot
they're so right about remaking the good ole Transformers series; all these adaptations have failed pretty bad...
*cough* and the movies were shit *cough*
@Overt
Bingo. Unlike Mechas now a days, the Patlabors actually have weight.
They damage the ground if it can't support it's weight, and the mecha actually move like they have high mass - they have inertia.
As for entertainment, it mostly comes from the utterly crazy cast of Division 2.
No Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040? Entire list is invalid to me now
Toyko 2040 already IS a remake. Your logic is invalid to me now.
I'm still wondering how Ohta ever managed to get through the Police Academy considering his attitude is more appropriate for a Marine, rather than a Cop.
Especially a Japanese Cop at that.
Actually, is 90's Look...
Hell yes, Patlabor is #1. Oshii is the greatest anime director of all time. Hell, he is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
1. Patlabor FUCK YES!
Machin Hero Wataru needs to be on top, otherwise I'll go along.
Kinda surprised to see Mazinger there. They did an awesome re-telling of the Mazinger story not too long ago. They can just continue those lines of anime.
It'd be just weird in epic proportions and a total trip to see Transformers back in anime form though, where it originated.
I don't understand why Transformers is on that list since there have been recent iterations of the anime released in recent years. I think the last one was last year or the year before.
None of the Transformers iterations are remakes, they're different stories that just reuse character names. Apart from Beast Wars in the mid-90s they're not even in the original's continuity.
The remake was of Mazinger Z and the tie-in into Great Mazinger. However, God Mazinger is an entirely different series.
where's ninja turtles?
alternate dimension mech. krang and the technodrome. nuff said.
Mazinger is 70's not 80's.
God Mazinger started airing in 1984.
Patlabor. for sure. the first meccha anime i watched when i was still a brat ^_^
I want a Kamen Rider remake ( animated version ) if possible ... with full cast of former Kamen rider
So....theres ANY reason for Tengen Toppa not makin it to this list?!
It wasn't made in the 80s?
It's called New Getter Robo... OH SNAP!
i'm gay
Aura Battler Dunbine! i'd like to see that remade.
Ah the 80's.
Never bothered with shows before my birthdate but Patlabor looks interesting ^^
its worth it
Yeah it is.
Sure is, I still got Patlabor on VHS. :)
watch it nao or get er... whatever seems horrible to you :)
Its the Japanese ver. no dub or subs. i can only understand half of it, is that horrible enough .
Whoever doesn't know Patlabor, TV is quite different from the darker movies. Both are great in their own way, though.
Go watch it! Nao!
Only if you watch it with me. (^_-)
My thoughts exactly Yoshii-kun. I figured that since I see myself as the beginning of awesomeness in this world and it was made before I was born then it isn't worth while; but I've recently been rethinking my stance based on some decent looking hows I've been presented with.
how old are you? that sound like you have... 20 years or less?
damn I don't recognize any of them, sad.
God...I hate the 80's. Thank God they're over
The 80's rule!
Other than fashion agreed. 80s music kickass 80s movies oh god do i miss them especially the soundtrakcs kids shows. Give me a nice mix of 80s action series with a mix up of more recent stuff and yep great shit. Or just import an assload of anime like they also did in the 80s. But yeah i'm from 86 and i remember just enough to say FUCK YEAH compare em to what kids get these days or the music these days and ESPECIALLY the movies these days and yeah 80s kickass.
Only thing i don;t miss is the extra camp kid show plots for some of em so merge the action of the 80s with the darker plots of today adn we got a winner.
Never watched platibor.
Which one should I watch? As I understand there are more shows than one?
Patlabor comes in:
a) OVA - Early Days
b) Patlabor TV
c) Patlabor OVA
d) movies
You're probably better off reading wikipedia or some other site for specifics, but IIRC, Early Days is an alternative take on the story with the same cast. Go for TV first. Movies and the other OVA depend a little on timeline, which I don't remember.
There were a lot productions. I'd suggest watching them in the order they were produced.
I really dislike Patlabor for some reason. I don't know why but even as a kid its the one anime i would actively avoid to watch.
maybe you have bad taste for movies... that could be a reason.
in short:
80's=mecha ^.^
Not all of them. See Galaxy Express, Dr. Slump, Minky Momo, Barefoot Gen, Cat's Eye, Yamato, Golgo 13, Creamy Mami, Toward the Terra, Queen Millennia, Urusei Yatsura, Space Adventure Cobra, Macross, Cream Lemon, the very first loli H anime, Dirty Pair...
Okok, Lovely Angels. Don't hurt meeee~
d00d Macross is mecha, not only that but TRANSFORMING mecha.
